“Captain log Stardate 24011103, we have been here just over a month now. We had a successful first contact mission with the Shivolian race. We have set a course for the keset race and carry on our second contact with the races here in the Delta Quadrant. The crew performed perfectly on the mission.” Out of nowhere, the ship cons went and Commander Danvers spoke.

“Captain, we have a priority one message came through from Starfleet via the Markonian Outpost. I’m putting it to you in your quarters now, Captain.”

Moments later, the message came through on his desk screen laptop: it was Admiral Uzoma Ekwueme.

“Captain, we have a mission for you. There have been disturbing indications that the Borg may be on the move. We have indications here in the beta quadrant and have been getting reports that they have been evacuating planets on the border of Borg space. We have been getting reports back for a few months from the Markonian Outpost. They have been getting reports from nearby races that the Borg have been pulling off their border-occupied planets. We need you to go to the following coordinates and check a planet that Voyager scanned as a full-operation defensive base. We want you to survey the planet and gather as much information as possible, and if possible, help any survivors or former Borg.”

The video message finally ended and the words End Transmission appeared on the screen. With that, he tapped a button on the desk where the control panel was located. “Bridge. This is the captain. We have new orders. I’m now sending the coordinates to the helm, lay in the course and engage warp factor 5. Commander, I want a meeting in the conference room in half an hour with all the senior crew.

“Thank you all for coming. We had a priority one message come in from Admiral Uzoma Ekwueme via the Markonian Outpost. There have been reports that the Borg are reorganising and moving their forces from their borders and we are to find out as much information as possible and report it back to HQ. I’ve already had the helm set course for coordinates that we received from intel that has been gathered from local races,” With that Telkir put up on the screen where they were heading on the viewscreen. “Our course will take us through Chaotic space to the nearest outpost. We have one record on the outskirts of Borg space,” said Telkir.

“From a tactical point of view, captain, we can’t go through Chaotic space. We won’t stand a chance. We are not built for battle like the USS Voyager was, and they barely survived an armed conflict with them when they had to help the Borg fight them. Captain, we will be lucky if we last 5 minutes against them,” replied Lt. Commander Sharpe.

“Yes, you are right with your conclusion there, Lt. Commander. That’s why I want the Dr to access the medical database files regarding the nanoprobes the USS Voyager’s Dr made two decades ago and work along with the Chief Engineer. (looking at the two as he says is) To weaponise as many high-yield quantum torpedoes as possible. Also, while they do that and not knowing what we may or may not get into, I want you, Lt Commander Sharpe, to coordinate with Commander Danvers to run drills in the holodeck or possible scenarios that might occur going off the scans we have of the base.” standing up at this point and walking over to the windows, the captain continued to speak.

“Lt Commander Ramsey, when you finish upgrading and outfitting the torpedoes, I want you to enhance the shields as much as you can, along with all the Phaser banks to a different modulating frequency. So if we do run in with species 8472 or even the Borg, we have somewhat of a chance and we don’t go down in 5 minutes.

(looking at Lt Commander Sharpe with a grin on his face)

Assign that to Lieutenant Junior Grade Tior. I know that’s his area of speciality. Assign him any crew he needs to get the job done. Plus, if you can get any extra shielding around the warp core, that would also be great. Last but not least, counsellor, I want you between now and whenever this is over to open your doors and check in on any members of the crew that were affected by the recent events of Frontier Day”.

Sitting back down at the desk and looking around at the senior crew. “Right, if there’s anything else you want to bring up, if not you have your orders, please jump to it. We have just under a week till we hit the outpost and 5 days till we hit Chaotic Space.”

With nothing else to discuss, the senior crew made their way out of the conference room and to their assigned missions. For the rest of the day, the captain sat in his ready room reading over the logs of the senior crew of the USS Voyager, seeing if there was anything he could learn. From a tactical point of view, he paid close attention to Lieutenant Commander Tuvok being the tactical officer on board the ship he had a few different ideas he had notes down in his logs about how he would have dealt with the situations when it came to the ship got in a fight especially when it comes to the Borg. Elsewhere on the ship, the senior crew were all hard at work trying to get the jobs asked by the captain completed before they reached Chaotic Space.

Elsewhere on the ship in engineering, Lt Commander Ramsey was handing out assignments that he had drawn up and overgoing them with his engineering crew. “Lieutenant Junior Grade Tior I need you for an assignment that you are specifically suited for you, I need you to do what you have been training to do and that is to enhance the ship’s shields and set up a multi-shield harmonics going through all the high and low bandwidth and alternating at the same time. Then do the same for the phasers but with the phasers have the front alternating to the back ones so when the front is firing at a high end of the bandwidth have the back ones alter at the low end of the bandwidth then get them to swap so the low end one so alternate to high end and vice versa.

Meanwhile, while down in Sickbay, Dr Arias and Nurse Langenheim prepare Sickbay to start manufacturing the nanoprobes. “Nurse, bring up the file from the voyager archives concerning the species 8472 nanoprobes modifications please and then get me the petri dish to place them in when we start manufacturing them.”With that nurse Langenheim collected half a dozen petri dishes and headed back over to the lab desk that Dr Arias was now sitting at looking over the voyager’s EMH doctor’s notes on the nanoprobes.

Finally last but not least on the Holodeck Commander Danvers and Lt Commander Sharpe were running Drills with a few of the security personnel going off the scans they had on record for the USS Voyager. However, these drills could not be relied on as they didn’t know the current state of the structure. They didn’t know if any passageway had been blocked by debris or damaged from when the Borg pulled out of there. These runs on the holodeck were only useful if their intel was still 100% right.

  • I both admire the convictions of the Gilroy crew for their confidence and convictions as they set out to prepare for multiple threats they would have little hope again, and simultaneously question whether Ekwueme actually meant for the California-class vessel to go through chaotic space - or rather circumnavigate it - in order to get to the Markonian Outpost. The nanoprobes, shield harmonics and phaser frequencies may give them some hope, but for the rational observer, what we must really hope is that they stumble across none of their feared adversaries, because even all of that stuff will be at best a hail mary. Look forward to reading on and see where the Gilroy goes from here!

  • Wow, this story is off to an exciting start! I love how Telkir and the crew are stepping up to face the potential return of the Borg. I also love the nod to Voyager and the mention of the Cali-class' limitations. I can't wait to see what they'll discover on their mission. 'To boldly go where no one has gone before' indeed! Well except Voyager mabe ;)

  • Sharpe’s observation about the capabilities of the Gilroy as compared to the Voyager is an ominous start indeed. But glad to see that the captain’s instructions to Sharpe giving our boy Tior a shout-out. ;) I appreciate the note about Telkir studying Tuvok in particular, not only because of Tuvok’s tactical experience, but also because I wonder if something of Tuvok’s Vulcan-ness appeals to Telkir! The final paragraph about the drills on the holodeck is a fine example of how preparation can only get you so far when dealing with so many unknowns.

  • Great start! Lots of busy bees here, what with all the preparations. I hope they don't need to worry about Species 8472 though! The Calis aren't really meant for war. Looking forward to reading more.
