Caduceus Pt. 1

The Corax has been recalled to Starbase 93 for for a priority mission order to help quell a disease outbreak

Chapter 1 – U Turn

As the event horizon of the Barzan Wormhole sealed behind them upon their return to the Alpha Quadrant, the sense of relief aboard the Corax was palpable. Aris almost wanted to cry as the space around them became more familiar.

“T’Keterk, status report.” Aris requested as the impulse drive kicked in.

“All systems showing green across the board, Captain. T’Keterk responded.

“Emma lay in a course for Devron Fleet Yards, take us home Ensign.” Aris directed to Ensign Swain. “Best possible speed.”

“Roger, Captain.” Emma replied with a small smile as she took the Corax to its maximum cruising speed.

Mentally running through his checklists, Aris was quick to realize he had a multitude of jobs to be completed before arriving home and he intended on making a dent in as many of them as possible. First being checking on their passenger, then filing and submission of status reports and the fiasco with the Telepathic Pitcher Plant. Silently praying to any deity that might be listening to ask the admiralty to not rake him over the coals.

“T’Keterk, what is the status of our passenger?”

“He appears to be resting comfortably in his quarters and vital signs are within acceptable parameters.” Replied T’Keterk

“Thank you, Lieutenant.” Aris nodded. “I’m going to have a chat with our guest, contact me if anything requires my attention enroute.”

“Acknowledged.”

“Yes, sir.”

Exiting the turbolift on the crew level, Aris made his way to the quarters he had set their passenger up in.

Pressing a finger to the chime, he waited patiently to be called in.

The door chime jolted Damian back to present day. He had spent the last couple of hours trying to unjumble his thoughts and catch up on the latest Federation News bulletins.

Everything had happened so quickly. The Barzan Wormhole had opened. Starfleet dispatched survey teams and scientists when the presence of Blood Dilithium had been detected. It was the find of a lifetime in his eyes, but nothing could have prepared him for the threats and wild west state of affairs in the Gardin Belt. He and his team had been researching a crystal formation when the mercenary groups arrived and annexed the planet they were on.

In the chaos of the mass evacuation, Damian had gotten separated from the rest of the team and was quickly absorbed into the refugee exodus. He had no way to contact Starfleet or his team lead. He wasn’t even sure the team had made their way to safety.

“Come in.” Damian called to the person patiently waiting on the other side of the door.

After getting the go ahead, Aris entered the quarters. Seeing the Captain, Damian stood bolt upright.

“As you were.” Aris smiled.

“Did you want anything to drink?” Aris asked as he stood in front of the replicator ordering a strong raktajino.

“A hot tea would hit the spot if you’re offering.” Damian replied as he retook his seat.

“Do you mind if I sit?” Aris motioned to an empty chair.

“Make yourself comfortable.” Damian responded as Aris slid a steaming mug across the table.

“How are you holding up?” Aris queried. “Is there anyone we can contact for you?”

Damian shook his head at the captains second question but knew the question was out of both genuine concern and respect.

“I’d be lying if I said everything was sunshine and butterflies. ” Damian responded. “Everything happened so quickly.”

“Why don’t you tell me from the beginning if you are willing?” Aris prompted.

Taking another sip of the mug of tea in front of him, Damian took a breath and explained how after Blood Dilithium had first been encountered he had been dispatched with a contingent of survey and research vessels expecting to study the find of a lifetime. What they weren’t prepared for however was the many factions at play jostling for and advantage.

When the mercenary fleet appeared in orbit and began hostile takeovers of the main towns and settlements, Damian  had gotten caught up in the crowds as the indigenous people evacuated. He had no idea if the rest of his team had made it off world or if they had survived at all.

Reaching his hand out, Aris placed it gently on Damian’s forearm. “It’s all going to be OK, we will get you home.”

“I can’t thank you enough, Captain.” Damian replied eyes glistening.

“No thanks are necessary.” Aris replied with a smile. “Now you aren’t confined to quarters so do feel free to make use of any of the common areas and if you need anything, don’t hesitate to call on either myself or the rest of the crew.”

Damian nodded as he sifted through his own thoughts. Clapping him once more on the shoulder, Aris go to his feet and excused himself.

Back in the corridor, Aris ran a hand over his face thinking over the conversation he had just had when a message from the bridge interrupted him.

“Bridge to Captain Suin.”

Recognizing Emma’s voice he replied. “This is the Captain. Go ahead, Ensign.”

“A priority message from Starfleet is awaiting your attention.”

“Thank you, Emma. Please divert the message to the conference room terminal and I will pick it up from there.” Aris requested as the communication was cut.

Taking a seat at the conference table with a refreshed mug of coffee, Aris accessed the waiting priority message. As he read Aris’ concern grew. Many of these worlds were not equipped to deal with a disease outbreak. Copying the message contents to the ship’s computer, Aris got to his feet and began to pace. The orders were clear. Report to Starbase 93 for resupply and receipt of additional cargo and equipment before departing for the Federation border with the old Romulan Neutral Zone.

“Captain Suin to bridge, Ensign Swain please divert course to Starbase 93 maximum warp.”

“Acknowledged, Captain.” Emma replied. “Course has been laid in and executed.”

Casting a last look at the terminal, Aris ended his session and downed the last dregs of coffee in his mug and departed for the bridge.

Chapter 2 – Particulars and Promotions

Starbase 93
Jan 2401

The Corax drew closer to Starbase 93 before they caught the attention of the base. “This is Starbase 93 Flight Control to USS Corax, we have you on sensors.”

Starbase 93, this is Captain Suin requesting permission to dock under priority orders.” Aris replied once the commlink was established.

“Acknowledged, Captain. You have been cleared to dock at Docking Bay 6. Regulations dictate thruster power only in the vicinity of Starbase. Welcome home.” Flight Control replied, closing the channel.

Settling back in his chair, Aris opened a ship wide channel. “All hands, this is the captain. Once we have completed docking, please report to my ready room. That includes you as well Mr. Andrews. Repeat, all hands please report to my ready room once docking procedures have been completed.”

Closing the channel, Aris got to his feet and nodded to his two bridge crew. “I’ll be in my ready room, please report as soon as we have docked.”

Reading over the reports provided by the Commodore, Aris felt the ship around him come to a halt and power down. A few short moments later he heard his door chime.

“Enter.” Aris called as Emma, T’Keterk and Damien filed in. Emma and Damien taking the two chairs and T’Keterk standing near the wall.

“Thank you everyone.” Aris spoke once everyone was situated. “Can I get any refreshments?”

Hearing no affirmatives Aris pressed on. “I have just received priority orders from Command.” Activating the holographic projector, he continued. “There has been an outbreak of Terrellian Plague among the Independent Romulan Factions since the dissolution of the Romulan Star Empire. Many of these worlds do not yet have sufficient infrastructure and medical equipment to deal with this outbreak, thus a formal request for assistance has been received by the Federation”

Around the room, Aris could see everyone nodding along as they took in the information.

“Captain, if I may?” T’Keterk spoke up from his position. Aris nodded, allowing the Vulcan time to finish his query.

“What of the local population in the area? Do we anticipate any resistance to our presence?”

“Negative, Lieutenant.” Aris replied. All major powers in the region have been made aware of the aid request.”

“However.” Aris continued. “The Federation was not the only organization that has responded. We have been made aware the Fenris Rangers are also actively responding to this crisis.”

Satisfied with the response, T’Keterk relaxed somewhat for the briefing to continue.

“How widespread are these outbreaks occurring?” Damien asked.

“Reports are coming in regularly of more world’s registering infections. Indications show it is developing to epidemic proportions but without immediate intervention this could turn into a fully fledged pandemic.”

“What are our immediate goals, Captain?” Emma questioned. “Considering we don’t have any permanent medical staff or science crew.”

Nodding to the junior Ensign, Aris got to his feet. “Emma’s question actually segues nicely into the next item on the agenda. Grabbing the padd in front of him, Aris turned to face his crew. “As we are heading into a disease outbreak Starfleet Command has put in a transfer order. We will be taking a new Chief Medical Officer on board as part of this resupply to supplement the EMH already installed.”

Taking a breath, Aris carried on. “In that vein, I do have some announcements to make. Firstly, Mr Andrew’s your trip home has been delayed for a while. I have been authorized to inform that you have been granted a provisional commission for the duration of this deployment. You will remain unranked at this stage but will have your clearances elevated to that of a junior officer. Congratulations Officer Andrews.”

There was a smattering of polite applause before Aris turned to his engineer. “Lieutenant T’Keterk it is also my honor to advise from this point on you have been granted a field promotion to Chief Engineer with all rights and privileges afforded to the position.”

T’Keterk simply bowed his head slightly in acknowledgment.

“And Emma, although only a fresh graduate out of the Academy, I am sorry to say I am unable to offer the same, although if its any consolation, I have made special mention of your acknowledgments in the Delta Quadrant in my reports to Command. Your skill at navigating the completely unfamiliar Delta Quadrant, calculating the safest routes and that amazing bit of flying when were under the influence of the Pitcher Plant has a few people rather interested back home.” Emma blushed slightly at Aris’ words, but it was soon clear he wasn’t done. “The theories postulated around our modified Picard Maneuver may have some practical effects, although purely theoretical at this point. It is with this in mind, I’m happy to report your training cruise has been completed.”

Although Emma was excited about the news, she couldn’t help but feel slightly put out that her time with the Corax might be coming to an end. She had grown accustomed to her space family and wasn’t quite ready to leave them just yet, no matter how selfish it may have sounded. “Does this mean I am up for reassignment, Sir?” Emma asked.

“Well that depends on you.” Aris replied. “I have submitted a formal request to have your assignment on the Corax be made permanent.”

“I would be honoured to accept.” Emma replied adding her authorization to the transfer orders.

“Wonderful.” Aris replied clapping his hands together. “With all that out of the way, we do still have a job to do. ”T’Keterk and Emma, can you please oversee the cargo transfer and keep an eye out for our new Chief Medical Officer. Notify me once she is on board and direct her to my ready room.”

“Yes, Sir.” both officers replied.

“Damien, we have two well equipped labs on board. They are free for you to utilise in the manner you see fit. Please make any preparations you feel are needed. I want us ready to depart as soon as the cargo transfer is completed.”

“Yes, Sir. Thank you, Captain.” Damien was quick to respond.

Looking around the room, Aris was quite pleased to have his crew with him for this mission and knew whole-heartedly they would rise to the occasion admirably.

“Did anyone have anything further to add, or any questions?” Aris asked.

With no one breaking the silence, Aris drew attention back to himself. “I want to thank you all for your time today. You are all dismissed.”

As the crew filed out of the ready room to attend to their respective orders, Aris reached for another padd. This one detailing his soon to be Chief Medical Officer.

Chapter 3 – Make Us Proud

Starbase 93
Jan 2401

Nora exited her Director’s office in a bit of a spin. With little warning she had found herself reassigned. It wasn’t until the situation had been explained that she started to even out.

Nora had been quite content in her daily routine now. After graduating Starfleet Medical, she found herself assigned to the London Branch assisting in the medical facilities that surrounded the satellite offices and fabrication plants of the Starfleet Corps of Engineering. This work kept her busy. From assisting with routine injury to more serious procedures.

Trained as more of a generalist, Nora took an in interest in historical illnesses and technologies used and how they could potentially help further along Medical Science. From historical outbreaks on Earth to Rigellian fever she kept her time occupied with research on some pet projects.

Nora had barely arrived for her duty shift when a staffer sidled up to her. “Excuse me, Doctor Yates?”

“How can I help you?” Nora replied, confusing colouring her tone.

“The Director would like to see you in your office as soon as you have settled in. Should I notify him you will be there directly?” the staffer replied.

Nora nodded, detecting the less than subtle command. This was non-optional. “Lead on.”

Following the staffer to the nearest turbolift, Nora racked her brains to try to determine why the Director was wanting to see her. As far as she was aware there were no issues. No one had made any complaints, her performance was at satisfactory levels and she had very little conflict with her peers. The soft snap-hiss of the turbolift door reopening grounded her back in reality. Following along a step behind the staffer, she was led to the Director’s office.

“Wait here just a moment if you please.” the staffer spoke before entering the office. Taking a moment to calm her breathing she waited to be called in.

“Doctor Yates, the Director will see you now.”

Entering the office, the staffer ensured the door closed behind them before leaving her in the Director’s presence.

“Take a seat Lieutenant.” The Director spoke up from his desk. “Can I get you anything? Tea? Coffee? Water?” he enquired as Nora perched on a chair facing him.

“I wouldn’t turn down a coffee, Director, but only if you’re having one too.” Nora replied with a small smile.

Getting to his feet, the Director busied himself with the replicator before turning back holding two coffees and passing one off to Nora.

Retaking his seat, the Director faced Nora. “I must apologise for hauling you up to see me first thing this morning. I can’t imagine this was how you envisaged your day panning out?”

“That’s a pretty safe bet, Sir.” Nora laughed softly before quickly straightening back up again. “What can I do for you, Director?” she asked respectfully, taking a sip of the drink in front of her.

“It is my duty to inform you that urgent orders have been received from Starfleet and you are being re-assigned.” Disappointment briefly flashed across her face, but she simply nodded. “I understand this was not welcome news, but while you take it in, I have some files I want you to look at.

Taking a sip to quench her suddenly dry throat, she looked up to the Director. “Of course sir, what do you have for me?”

The Director handed over two padds outlining the current Terrellian Plague outbreak amongst the planets in the former Romulan Neutral Zone and Independent Romulan Factions. “I don’t understand, Sir. Why are you showing me these?”

Settling back in his chair, the Director smiled. “I know about your interest in utilising historical data to hypothesise advancements in medicine. But tell me Doctor, would you pass up the chance to research epidemic origins and how certain mutations affect transmission and symptoms?”

“Are these the reason for my reassignment?” Nora asked as she stared at the information in front of her. Her coffee, forgotten on the edge of the desk.

“Indeed it is, Lieutenant.” the Director replied. “I personally requested the transfer as I feel you are the best qualified to take point on this.”

“What are my orders sir?” she asked.

“You are to immediately report to the USS Corax currently docked at Starbase 93. This padd has confirmation of your transfer orders and mission logs from her time in the Delta Quadrant.” The Director handed her a padd. “I suggest you familiarise yourself with these reports on the way. Now she may have a young captain he is no less capable.”

“Yes, Sir. Thank you.” Nora replied as she got to her feet.

“I expect a full report when you get back. Make us proud” The Director smiled. “You are dismissed, Lieutenant.”

Padd in hand, Nora consulted her orders. She had arrived on Starbase 93 a few hours ago. Entering the docking bay, she got her first look at her new assignment

“Hmm, raven class.” she muttered. The immediate vicinity was abuzz with officers loading crates, allocating storage speaces and the associated machinery to make it all happen

As she got closer, she noticed two officers supervising the stations operations staff as cargo was rapidly filling the available space of the small yet powerful vessel. Straightening her uniform a bit, she approached an Ensign wearing the red colours of the command division.

“Good Morning, Lieutenant Yates, Transfer, Chief Medical Officer.” She spoke as she stood in front of Ensign Swain.

“Ensign Emma Swain, flight control officer.” Emma shook Nora’s hand. “I trust you have your transfer orders on hand?”

Nodding, Nora relinquished the padd she was holding. “Where is the Captain?”

Emma cast a quick glance over the transfer order before appearing satisfied with what she was seeing. “That all appears to be in order.” Looking up at Nora, Emma continued. “The Captain is expecting your arrival, please report to his ready room on Deck 2, just off the bridge toward the front. Welcome aboard Lieutenant”

Thanking Emma, Nora entered the the cargo bay, staying behind the yellow lines she made her way to the turbolift to meet the captain. She would set up the infirmary and get settled in after this meeting.

Looking ahead as the turbolift arrived on Deck 2, Nora made her way toward the bridge. What was normally a hive of activity was calm and quiet. For now. Stepping up to the door to the Captain’s Ready Room, Nora activated the door chime and waited to be granted entrance.

“Come in.” the Captain called out within moments.

Taking a deep breath and smoothing out non-existent wrinkles in her uniform, she shook out some nervous energy before opening the door to meet her new Commanding Officer.

Chapter 4 – Welcome to the Family, Doctor

Starbase 93
Jan 2401

Looking up as the door opened, Aris got his first look at his new Chief Medical Officer. Getting to his feet, he strode to the other side of the desk to greet her.

“Lieutenant Yates, welcome aboard. I’m Lieutenant Commander Aris Suin, Commanding Officer. Can I get you anything?” he greeted her warmly.

“Thank you, Captain.” Nora replied. “Sparkling water with a lemon wedge if you’re offering.”

Busying himself with the replicator he returned with Nora’s requested water and a tea for himself. “Take a seat, Lieutenant.” Aris smiled, handing over the glass before taking a seat himself. Inclining her head slightly she took one of the seats the captain had indicated.

“Computer, please enter into log Lieutenant Yates has reported in and update onboard credentials appropriately.” Aris spoke before focusing his attention back to Nora. “I will admit.” he began once she had settled in. “I was a bit surprised to receive a transfer request from a director of Starfleet Medical, but when someone of that caliber makes a request, it is difficult to decline.”

“I understand completely.” Nora replied with a smile. “Considering I only found out myself earlier today. The Director likes to keep us on our toes at times.”

“Have you been briefed on our situation at all?” Aris asked settling back in his chair.

“Only in generalities, Sir.” Nora replied. “There have been reports of breakouts of Terrellian Plague amongst some of the planets among the Independent Romulan Factions and the old Romulan Neutral Zone and a formal request for assistance has been received. I have not yet been advised on what our role will be.”

“We are being ordered to report to Proto II in the Proteus System to assist the System Governor with ending an outbreak of Terrellian Plague amongst the mining colonies.” Aris took a sip of his tea before continuing. “Our orders are to provide cures to the infected, administer treatments when symptoms start presenting and any preventative measures that can be used. We will be working alongside local medical personnel”

At this, the gears in Nora’s head started to climb into overdrive with what she was learning. “Carry on, Captain.” she smiled.

“We are currently taking on fabrication units, medical equipment and supplies and emergency shelters as a precaution. Local medical facilities are holding well enough but bracing for what is to come. We have been requested to land on the outskirts of the capital city and set up a field hospital and treatment centre to handle patient overflow and first response if required.”

Pausing to take another sip, Aris got to the bit that he was hoping would pique Nora’s interest. “As we have some fairly isolated mining colonies in the local area, I want you to uncover how this outbreak has occurred, both in the main populated areas and the mining colonies in the immediate vicinity. Supply vessels and transport ships may explain how this outbreak has occurred in the metropolitan areas, but that leaves some questions about how it has spread amongst the miners.”

Leaning back in his chair, Aris waited patiently for Nora’s return serve. “I may have some concessions.” Nora replied with a sly smile.

“Naturally.” Aris replied. “Name them.”

“I will need access to a lab independent from the Sick Bay.” Nora began. “And I would like to audit the medical facilities myself and get familiarized.”

Smiling, Aris leaned forward slightly. “The Corax has two well equipped generalised science labs currently under the watchful eye of my new science officer. I’ll leave you to arrange the specifics with Officer Andrews. Touching on your second point, I actively encourage you to familiarise yourself with your new posting. Inform me if additional supplies or equipment is needed.”

“Thank you, Captain.” Nora replied as she set the now empty glass on the desk. “With your permission, I will report to Sickbay and start settling in.”

“Permission granted, Lieutenant. Welcome aboard.”

Entering the Sickbay, Nora found herself slightly impressed. Although a spartan design of a single biobed and attached medical lab, it was surprisingly well equipped for a ship of its size with an EMH installed. She could work with this. It was almost the polar opposite to her previous assignment but she was curious. A sudden disease outbreak in Romulan space, a transfer to a new assignment and a growing sense of peace.

Maybe this change in scenery would be good for her. A chance to work on the frontlines again, further her own research and see something that wasn’t London for a while.

“Welcome home, Nora.” she whispered with a smile as she deposited her hand luggage on the lone biobed.

Chapter 5 – Filling In The Blanks

Starbase 93
Jan 2401

Aris was busy in his ready room reviewing the latest updates out of Romulan space when he was interrupted by Lieutenant T’Keterk.

“T’Keterk to Captain Suin.”

“Go ahead, Lieutenant.” Aris replied.

“Resupply has been completed and our additional cargo has been safely stored away.” T’Keterk reported.

“Thank you Lieutenant. Finalise any preparations and report to the briefing room as soon as possible.” Aris replied. It was time to bring the crew together and fill in all the blanks.

“All hands, this is the Captain. Please report to the Briefing Room as soon as your preparations are complete

Nora had finished setting up her Sickbay and had deposited her belongings in her quarters. The Corax wasnt quite ready to depart so with a bit of time up her sleeves she headed in the direction of the Science labs so she could introduce herself to the ships sole science officer and arrange lab access for when they arrived in the Proto system.

Finding her way to the science labs, she noticed what must be Officer Andrews getting things set up. Entering the lab, she knocked lightly on the bulkhead beside the door. “Officer Andrews?” she asked.

Hearing he wasn’t alone in the lab, Damien tensed slightly. Knowing he was experiencing a bout of hypervigilance he swallowed down the fright and turned to face his visitor.

“Yes? how can I help you…?” Damien was quick to reply.

“Lieutenant Nora Yates, Chief Medical Officer.” Nora replied with a soft smile as she shook the officer’s hand.

“Provisional Officer Damien Andrews, Science Officer.” Damien introduced himself. “What can I do for you Lieutenant?”

“I was hoping I might be able to arrange some time in the labs for the duration of this assignment.” Nora began. “I’m sure you can appreciate the medical lab on board is rather spartan.”

“I don’t see why not.” Damien replied. The Corax was equipped with two labs after all and Damien didn’t anticipate requiring the use of both. “Tell you what, Doctor. I can make the second lab available for your use, however I would have a request.”

“Go on.” Nora replied. Much like her discussion with the Captain earlier, concessions would have to be made.

“I will routinely pass through to make sure things are up to scratch but if you are conducting some research or an experiment, I would love to learn a little about it if you are willing.” Damien replied. He really wanted to do well and prove himself to the Captain, whom he was sure was faced an uphill battle when securing a provisional commission, and what better way to do that than learn as much as possible and get as much experience as possible, especially from a field that works so closely with the sciences.

Nora thought it over. This could prove beneficial. A fresh perspective from someone who has been on the frontlines, and a chance to pass on some of her knowledge to a willing student.

“Request granted.” Nora smiled. “I would absolutely be willing.”

Shaking hands once more, the pair heard the announcement from the Captain. “Shall we?” Nora asked motioning toward the door

Emma was seated at her console on the main bridge reviewing some long range sensor data. After pointing the new Chief Medical Officer to the Captain, she offered to return to the Cargo Bay to assist T’Keterk, but he had everything under control. Returning to the bridge seemed the next best thing to do. She had seen the Doctor leave after meeting with Captain, but she had yet to see Aris since his briefing earlier today.

Her sensor logs were looking good and long range astrometrics had several routes plotted for consideration. Just as she thought about getting up to check on the Captain, she was stopped in her tracks by the shipwide announcement.

Scrambling to her feet, Emma made directly for the briefing room.

Entering the briefing room, Aris smiled when he saw his crew patiently waiting for them. Noticing the Captain had joined them, Emma shot to her feet. “Captain on deck.”

“At ease everyone, can I get you anything before we begin?” Aris asked as he took his seat. Seeing the shakes of his crew’s heads, he delved right into it.

“For those who haven’t been introduced yet, join me in welcoming Lieutenant Nora Yates, who is filling the role of Chief Medical Officer on personal request from the Directorship of the London branch of Starfleet Medical.”

Murmurs of hellos and greetings filled the air briefly, before Aris cleared his throat slightly and directed the attention back. “I have received our confirmed orders for the duration and after effects of this Terrellian Plague outbreak. We will soon depart for the Proteus system, namely Proto II on request from the systems governor.”

Tapping a few commands into the terminal, Aris bought up a map of the Proteus System. “The Proteus System is quite industrialized with mining colonies spread out across several worlds. We will be landing the Corax on the outskirts of the capital city and setting up an emergency treatment and vaccination centre and be ready to assist with overflow capacity.”

Tapping a few more commands, Aris changed the information to the latest tactical information. “Be advised the Fenris Rangers have also been called in to assist and we are not to engage unless approached first. We are in the system solely as a humanitarian support. We are not to interfere with the internal workings of Proto II and by extension the Proteus system as a whole. We are to observe and assist within the parameters of our assignment.”

“Any questions?” Aris finished as he faced the crew.

“How extensive is the outbreak?” Nora asked. “And will the people of Proto II be left in a position to treat outbreaks like this in future. It takes a lot of stones for the Romulans or Remans for that matter to call on the Federation for assistance.”

“Reports from Starfleet Command and records supplied by the Proteus Governor show the outbreak is holding at epidemic levels, localised to the habitable planets and two mining colonies.” Aris replied with a nod in Nora’s direction. “Once we have assisted Proto II to the extent of our mandate, Command has authorised us to gift some additional medical synthesisers and fabrication units to put them in a much better position to battle this without outside influence.”

“Thank you, Captain.” Nora replied as she filed some information away for later.

“Captain, if I may?” T’Keterk enquired. Aris motioned for him to continue as he took his seat. Facing the rest of the crew, T’Keterk gave a crash course in the structure and mandates of the Fenris Rangers. Going over the independent nature of their operations, but due to being spread across the region, if the tide turns against them, they are likely to retreat and regroup. However as the old adage goes: if you leave them alone, they will leave you alone.

T’Keterk retook his seat, nodding back to the Captain.

“Thank you, Lieutenant.” replied Aris. “If there is nothing else, please prepare for departure within the hour.”

With nothing further to add and recognising the dismissal, the crew filed out to bring the Corax back online and in space as soon as possible.

Chapter 6 – Taking a Fortifying Sip

Starbase 93
Jan 2401

Emma, Damien and T’Keterk were seated at a table in the Crew Lounge looking out at the internal workings of the station’s docking bay. Each nursing a drink of choice. Not many words were being shared as each thought about the monumental task ahead. The Captain was counting on them and after their shared adventure in the Delta Quadrant, they were eager to get back into the action and start making a difference again. But it wasn’t just the Captain counting on them, the population of Proto II was too. They had significantly more to lose and if left unchecked, there was a risk of the outbreak spreading to both Romulan Republic and Federation worlds.

Obviously the Admiralty and the Captain were impressed with how they had conducted themselves if the first debrief was anything to go by. Some positions were made permanent, some promotions were handed out, and others found themselves with commendations or provisional commissions. There had been little to time relax and decompress before they were thrown back into the action. They knew this. The Captain knew this and no doubt their new doctor knew this. They couldn’t fault anyone for this situation. They knew what they were signing up for and even the Captain would only have limited influence if any on the decisions handed down.

Their quiet murmuring and musings were soon interrupted when the door to the lounge slid open revealing the new Doctor. They watched as she ordered a drink at the replicator and approached the table. “Do you mind if I join you?” Nora asked politely. She had yet to properly meet Lieutenant T’Keterk and Ensign Swain, only seeing them briefly on her arrival and again in the briefing room.

“Not at all, Doctor.” T’Keterk spoke for the group. “Make yourself comfortable.” T’Keterk motioned to an empty seat. Once she was comfortable, T’Keterk spoke again. “I am Lieutenant T’Keterk, provisional Chief Engineer, and next to me is Ensign Emma Swain, Flight Control.” he indicated Emma sitting to his left.

Emma gave Nora a small wave before speaking up. “Although on a ship this size, I think Pilot is possibly a more apt description.” She smiled at T’Keterks raised eyebrow and offered a hand for Nora to shake. “Welcome aboard.”

Nora shook the offered hand and before she could reply, Emma carried on. “But we are off duty and among friends so please call me Emma.” Laughing she gestured to her fellow crew. “Can’t speak for this bunch though.”

Around the table everyone else echoed similar sentiments once the final introductions had been made.

Before too long conversation sparked back up again for the small group of officers. Some conversing with the group as a whole and others talking amongst themselves. Emma and T’Keterk were going over efficiencies that could be made to the warp core and subsystems while Damien engaged Nora in a discussion around some dedicated facilities in the science labs that could be fabricated to map the genome of the disease outbreak and test treatment options.

Everyone was feeling a bit split. Both anxious to get the mission started but also dreading what might be greeting them.

“Does anyone have the time?” Damien suddenly broke the comfortable atmosphere. “We must be almost ready to depart.”

Checking the chronometer on one of the consoles against the wall, they saw their time on base was quickly drawing to a close.

Just as everyone were downing their last sips and getting ready to stand up, Nora spoke up.

“Before we all go and get ourselves duty ready, I just want to let you all know my office is always open. I know you have all barely had the chance to debrief after your mission to the Delra Quadrant so if you do want to talk, please let me know. I was required to participate in a basic psychology course as part of my training and will offer whatever services I can.”

There was a rousing chorus of everyone thanking her as they got to their feet and filed out. Once Emma and T’Keterk left, Damien turned to face Nora. “If I may, Doctor?”

Nora waited for the crew lounge to empty before she spoke to the young officer. “What can I help you with?”

“I’d like to take you up on that offer after we depart if possible.” Damien enquired looking down slightly.

“Not a problem at all.” Nora replied with a small smile keeping her voice soft and steady. “Come and see me when you have a moment.”

“Thank you, Doctor.” Damien offered a salute before scampering out the door and making his way back to the labs.

Chapter 7 – Second Star to the Left

Starbase 93
Feb 2401

Coffee in hand, Aris left his Ready Room, frowning slightly at the padd in his other hand, and ambled over to his chair. He had been reviewing the latest updates provided by the Proto II Health Ministry. The local health systems were still coping well so far but the outbreak was believed be starting to accelerate. Unfortunately due to their remoteness and proximity to several mining colonies, their testing capabilities were somewhat limited.

He would have Nora look over the information once they were en-route. Setting the mug down on the arm of his chair, Aris activated the shipwide communication system. “Attention all hands, this is the Captain, please report to your stations and prepare for immediate departure.”

Within a few short minutes Emma, T’Keterk and Damien appeared on the Bridge hurrying to their respective stations. Aris waited patiently until his crew had settled themselves.

“T'Keterk please complete pre-departure checks.” Aris spoke up.

“Affirmative, Captain.” T'Keterk responded busying himself with his checks.

“Emma, run me through the next steps.”

“Contact Docking Control and get clearance for departure, ensure docking bay doors are open and all access to the ship has been sealed, Sir.” Emma responded quickly.

“See to it, Ensign.” Aris replied with a smile settling back in his chair.

“Yes, Sir.” Emma replied with a small smile before returning to the task at hand. “Officer Andrews, confirm our departure clearance with Docking Control and seal the ship.”

Nodding to Emma, Damien turned back to his console and sealed all external access to the ship. “Clearance confirmed, Ensign.” Damien reported to Emma.

“Thank you, Damien.” Emma replied. “Lieutenant T'Keterk, stand by to open docking bay doors on my mark.”

As Emma launched the ship, the crew could feel the intertial dampeners take hold as she held the ship steady above the landing pad.

“Lieutenant, open docking bay doors, ready to depart on your order, Captain.” Emma deferred back to Aris.

“Thank you, Ensign.” Aris replied. “Take us out. nice and steady.”

“Yes Sir." Emma acknowledged, nodding over her shoulder. Aris settled in again and observed Emma's work as the ship cleared the docking bay and headed toward open space.

“Captain, we are clear from Starbase 93.” Emma reported. “Your orders?”

“Set course for the Proteus System, Warp 6.” Aris replied. “And inform me once we are in range of Proto II, the Governor is expecting us.”

“Of course, sir. ”Emma replied as she punched in the required coordinates. “Course laid in sir, ready for your command.”

“Engage.” Aris replied before busying himself with the reports he had started reviewing prior to their departure, taking this lull to keep himself up to date.

“Bridge to Lieutenant Yates.” Aris spoke as he activated the shipewide communicator.

“Go ahead, Captain.” Nora replied.

“I am transmitting the latest intel from Proto II to your terminal." Aris continued. “I can't make heads nor tails of it, but please inform me of any information you believe I need to be made aware of.”

“Data received, Captain.” reported Nora. “I will begin reviewing immediately.”

“Thank you Doctor. I'll expect your preliminary findings at your earliest convenience.”

“Copy that, Captain.” Nora replied as the channel closed.

“Captain, if I may?” queried T'Keterk once Aris had finished speaking with the doctor.

“Yes, Lieutenant.” Aris replied. “What can I help you with?”

“I wonder if you have time now to discuss the logistic arrangements and security details to be implemented once we arrive.” answered T'Keterk.

“Very well.” Aris got to his feet. “Meet me in my Ready Room. Emma, you have the bridge.”

“Yes, Sir.” Emma replied as T'Keterk and Aris disappeared into Aris' ready room, also noticing the way Damien's eyes followed the Captain..

“So just you and me.” she continued as she faced Damien. “I look forward to seeing what you can do.”

“Thank you.” Damien replied with a smile. “Its a privilege and an honor to be able to serve on the bridge.”

“That it is.” Emma responded. “I am truly sorry the present circumstances have delayed your return home, especially after what we all went through on the other side of that wormhole.”

“I knew what I was getting in to when I enlisted.” Damien replied with a shrug. “And besides, I would have been a fool to pass up this opportunity. I really want to do well and earn my place here.”

Emma knew where Damien was coming from, not even a few months ago she was in this exact position. “Trust me, I know the feeling and the Captain isn't one to put his faith in the wrong person. He's seen something in you, just like you possibly see something in him." She finished with cheek colouring her tone.

Damien felt his cheeks instantly heat up. “I'm sure I don't know what you are talking about.” he stammered before turning to face his console.

“Don't worry, your secret is safe with me.” Emma giggled before diverting her attention back to her console.

Chapter 8 – The Doctor will See You Now

USS Corax
Feb 2401

The Corax was steadily making its way towards the Proteus System when Damien found himself outside the sickbay, needing both a long overdue health check and an outlet to unjumble his thoughts. Now that he was here, he was starting to second-guess himself. He probably should have contacted Doctor Yates before showing up unannounced, although, she had mentioned to pop by once they were en-route. Before he could change his mind the doors slid open and Nora’s voice floated through the opening.

“You can come in, Mr Andrews.”

Swallowing the newly formed lump in his throat, Damien took a step forward and got his first look at the sickbay, with Nora standing beside the lone biobed.

“Take a seat and we will get started.” Nora spoke with a soft smile as she pulled her tricorder out and waited patiently for Damien to get situated. “What brings you in today?”

Damien’s followed the handheld scanner as she checked his vitals. “After a tour of duty in the Delta Quadrant and our present course heading directly into a disease outbreak, just thought it was a sound conclusion to get checked out and up to date.”

“If only everyone thought like you did.” Nora replied as she cast an eye over the results of her scan. “I see nothing of concern today Mr Andrews, but you are overdue a couple of boosters.”

“I have time.” Damien replied.

“Wonderful.” Nora continued as she walked into her office briefly.

“Is the crew making you feel welcome and a part of the crew since you received your provisional approval?” Nora asked, returning from the office with a trolley carrying a hypospray and several different vials. “I know you had a bit of an experience in the Delta Quadrant and not being given any time to process.”

“We haven’t really had much time to interact since we returned to Federation space.” Damien shrugged. “But I haven’t felt unwelcome or under scrutiny. The others obviously trust Captain Suin’s judgement.”

Dispensing the first shot into Damien’s shoulder, Nora continued to probe lightly. “And how about you? Do you trust the Captain’s judgement? From my observations, despite his relative young age, he has several lifetimes of memories and experience to draw on, so I don’t expect him to make these decisions lately.”

“I hadn’t considered that.” Damien admitted as Nora was busying herself with the next canister on the tray. “When he arrived to oversee the supply drop, it felt like a light at the end of a tunnel. I had a chance to return home.

Damien continued his train of thought as Nora administered the second shot. “It felt almost personal, rather than a sense of professional duty and he fulfilled that promise. I know it sounds like hero worship, but I want to do right by the opportunity and prove myself.” Damien felt himself going a bit red as he finished.

“I’m glad to hear it.” Nora, ever the professional deciding not to comment further. She administered the final shot and left Damien to his thoughts for a moment as she updated his personnel file and medical records.

“Good news, Mr Andrews, as I mentioned earlier, nothing of concern to note today, is there anything concerning you that you want to discuss?” Nora asked, as she placed the padd on the trolley.

“Not at this stage. Thank you, Doctor.” Damien replied as he slid himself off the biobed.

“In that case, I do prescribe a detour past the Crew Lounge for a drink and a snack before making sure that lab of yours is in top shape before we drop of out warp.” Nora finished with a smile and ushering Damien to the door. “Don’t hesitate to stop by whenever you need.”

And with that, Damien found himself back out in the corridor staring at the bulkhead in front of him. He had probably said more than he wanted, but he also felt a little lighter inside for it. Taking the doctors advice, Damien decided to pick up a snack and a drink from the lounge before returning to the lab.

“Deck 1, Crew Lounge.” Damien requested as he entered the nearest available turbolfit feeling like things were going to turn out ok. Most likely in unexpected ways, but if it expected, is it worth the risk?

Chapter 9 – Relaxation and Realisations

USS Corax
Feb 2401

Aris was ensconced in his ready room combing through updates and reports filing important information away for later. Leaning back and taking a stretch, Aris was surprised by how much time had passed. The journey passing quite smoothly, since the bridge hadn’t contacted him for anything.

“Captain Suin to Bridge.” Aris activated his communicator.

“Go ahead, Sir.” Emma replied.

“Anything to report?”

“Negative, Captain.” Emma continued. “Smooth flying ahead, we may need to adjust our course slightly in a few hours to avoid a plasma storm passing through.”

“Acknowledged.” replied Aris getting to his feet and closing the comm channel. A drink and something small to eat was in order before he returned to his less than exciting reading.

Making the trek along the length of Deck 1, Aris entered the cool dim surrounds of the Crew Lounge. Feeling in the mood for something small, Aris approached the replicator banks.

“Ham and cheese toasted sandwich and a sweet black tea, hot, please.” Aris requested. Even murmuring a quiet thank you as his meal materialized in the alcove. Eyeing the table closest to the window, Aris made himself comfortable, savoring the first sip of his drink.

Turning to face the window as he slowly ate his sandwich, he didn’t notice he was no longer alone. Damien had entered a short moment ago on orders from Doctor Yates intent on scouting out a small meal and drink. It wasn’t until he had turned around with a tray of food that he noticed the Captain was lost in thought staring out the window.

“Excuse me, Captain? Is this seat taken?” Damien motioned toward the empty seat opposite Aris.

Hearing that he wasn’t alone, Aris turned his head slightly before smiling. “Not al all, make yourself comfortable”

Nodding, Damien took his seat and got comfortable. “It’s good to see you up and about.” Aris continued. “And a clean bill of health from our good Doctor to boot.”

Damien took a small bite of his meal and a sip of his drink before focusing back to the Captain. “It is a weight off my own mind, Sir. And the crew have been nothing but welcoming since I was bought aboard”

“That is good to hear. “Aris replied. “I trust you are finding your feet well enough and Emma and T’Keterk haven’t given you much grief?”

“And none of this ‘Sir’ carry on.” Aris laughed. “Both of us aren’t on duty at the moment so you can address me informally if you would like.”

“Understood.” Damien replied. “Doctor Yates didn’t happen to mention anything else about our appointment?”

Aris recognized the gentle probing but he was more than happy to put the young man at ease. “What ever you and Doctor Yates discussed is between the both of you. Nora wouldn’t break confidentiality unless it was something she feels I need to know, or if you wind up being a danger to yourself or the crew.”

Seeing Damien relax slightly, Aris probed a little further. “Unless there is something you feel I should know?”

He did notice the telltale signs of a light blush spreading across his science officers face, even in the relatively dim lighting of the lounge.

Casting a quick eye at the clock, Aris drained his cup and got to his feet to return his utensils to the replicator. Making a slight detour past his previous seat, he placed a hand on Damien’s shoulder, giving it a slight squeeze. “Thank you for the company and my door is always open if needed.” he replied in lieu of a farewell.

“Thank you as well….Aris.” Damien replied testing out using the Captains name informally and finding it much easier than he thought it would. On a ship this small, they had to be each others rock and family while on duty so it was certain to be a common occurrence on board. He had already noted the Captain’s intermixing of formal and informal address, knowing instinctively when a more personal touch was needed. Such as now.

Releasing the young man, Aris headed for the exit, glancing back briefly to see Damien now touching the spot Aris’ hand occupied earlier.

“Well little one.” Aris murmured as he opted to walk back to his ready room rather than use the turbolift. “Looks like we’ve been caught hook, line and sinker.”

Back in the Lounge, Damien took a moment to compose himself before following the Captains lead and returning his utensils before heading back to the Lab to run some additional tests and take stock.

Chapter 10 – Medical Matters

USS Corax
Feb 2401

Nora could be found seated in her office demolishing a snack awaiting the latest reports from Proto II. Nora hated going into a situation without having the most current information available. After a short wait, her terminal beeped, notifying her the updated information from the Captain had been uploaded.

Quickly skimming over the information, Nora spoke up. “Computer, create new project file referenced Proteus, authorisation: Yates-Echo-India-22-Omicron.”

“Project file created.” the computer replied.

“Initiate data transfer of all files related to Terrellian Plague and our current assignment to Proto II and implement a standing order to further transfer all updates from Captain Suin in relation to our current assignment to this project file.”

“Acknowledged.” the computer answered as Nora monitored the data transfer on her terminal. Once the transfer was complete she would run it all through a custom sorting and analysis algorithm to find any patterns, historical similarities and cross reference that information with the latest intel from Proto II and it’s surrounds. Leaving the program to run, she retrieved her padd from the side table intent on doing one last stocktake and synthesize any additional compounds or medications that may be required.

It was during these moments that muscle memory took over that Nora was able to relax a bit and allow her mind to wander a bit. As she reviewed the numbers of every supply in storage a thought struck her, she would be able to use some of the EMH’s processing power to help analyse the data faster and with greater accuracy.

“Computer, activate EMH.”

“Please state the nature of the medical emergency.” the EMH sounded as the hologram faded into view.

“No emergency.” Nora replied as she got to her feet from the crouch she had been holding while adding stock levels to her padd.

“With all due respect, Doctor, if there is not an emergency I am confused by me presence here.” the Doctor continued.

“I am authorising you access to a project file being collated on the main terminal, I will need your expertise and processing power as we work to end an outbreak of Terrellian Plague.” Nora spoke rapidly. The information we are receiving is accurate and current, but there is no order to it and no refining. We have to determine the point of origin and treat the already infected, but that won’t help if we can’t slow the spread of infection.”

“Very well.” the EMH responded. “Awaiting authorisation code.”

“Computer, grant EMH file access to project file referenced Proteus, Authorisation: Yates-Echo-India-22-Omicron.”

“Acknowledged.” the ever steady voice of the computer replied. “Data uplink completed.”

“If there is nothing else?” the EMH cut in.

“Apologies.” Nora replied with a smile. “Computer, deactivate Emergency Medical Hologram.”

Once the hologram had blinked out of existence Nora returned to her desk to review the numbers. Stock levels were looking good nothing was low or in urgent need at present. She was slowly turning the Sickbay into her domain and the close quarters of the Corax was turning into quite the new home for her.

Yes, this was a good assignment to be on, especially with something as exciting as a disease outbreak on the horizon. Life was good.

Chapter 11 – Engineering Efficiently

USS Corax
Feb 2401

The turbolift doors slid open with a faint hiss, depositing T’Keterk near Engineering. They were a few short days from their arrival at the border of the old Romulan Neutral Zone. While Emma got them to their destination was the perfect time to run some additional diagnostics while the ships systems were operating at peak efficiency.

While some of the particulars of their assignment were common knowledge, there was still a lot of unknowns they were flying in to and T’Keterk wanted to make sure they were ready for any eventuality, whether they were remaining in orbit to screen new arrivals or would be landing planet side to supplement the existing medical facilities. It was all entirely dependent on the ever evolving situation ahead and the direction of the planetary government. They were there on official invite of course, this was as much a diplomatic assignment as was a humanitarian assignment. What they did here could have long lasting impacts if the correct advantage were applied.

Taking a seat at the small office off the main area of Engineering, T’Keterk began queueing some Diagnostic programs and making minor adjustments to power transfer rates and reinforcing any redundancies. Some might say he was taking things a bit far, but one could never be too careful. Although he was more than certain of the Corax’s ability, he still felt like they had something to prove. They were just as capable as their larger counterparts and in some respects even more resourceful.

Keeping an eye on the terminal screen in front of him as results from the diagnostics programs began to appear. Copying some of the data to his padd, T’Keterk was pleased. Once the final diagnostics had completed, he would run some simulations based on the projected needs and requirements of the Proteus system.

As he patiently waited for the final program to finish, T’Keterk found himself thinking back to where it all started and where they were currently. With little warning, he had found himself re-assigned to the Corax joined by a fresh academy graduate pilot and a relatively young captain thrust into the centre seat as provisional Commanding Officer. If he was being honest with himself, he didnt expect the first journey into the Delta Quadrant to be successful, but as the small tight-knit crew of three traversed the unknown of the new frontier listening for signals in the dark, his opinions quickly changed. They became their own support system, keeping each other honest and always watching out for each other. It was both humbling and also a true example of the ideals of Starfleet and by extension the Federation.

This sentiment rang true when they completed their initial supply run and the colony leader returned a Federation researcher who got caught up in the chaos. Seeing the Captain immediately offer comfort and contact before promising to get him home safely was almost enough to make the most logical of Vulcan shed a tear. Although, their passenger was an unknown variable to the rest of the crew, he knew both himself and Emma made certain to let him know that he was never a burden and was a welcome addition to the crew.

Turning his thoughts to the present assignment and crew transfers that took place in very quick succession, T’Keterk found himself pleased. Having a trained doctor and a research specialist on board in temporary capacities would be a huge asset to the Corax. Granted aside from the intial briefing and a toast to their future success, T’Keterk hadn’t had much of a chance to interact with Damien and Nora properly, but he resolved to change that as soon as possible. The respect he had for Captain Suin was a small price to pay to help the new officers find their feet and be part of the ever growing family. Allowing himself the smallest of smiles, T’Keterk looked around the Engineering section. There was nowhere he would rather be and looking back never once regretted his decision to pursue Engineering over the Sciences most Vulcan’s had a leaning toward.

He didn’t know what the future was going to hold, but he hoped almost beyond hope that he would be able to remain a valued member of Aris’ crew. He was well aware as he was certain the rest of the crew was as well that their posting to the Corax was short-term and life in Starfleet could deal you a terrible hand at the drop of a hat.

The chirping of the terminal bought him out of his musings. All diagnostics came back clean across the board. Compiling the results, he would deliver these to the Captain and Emma as soon as he ran a few simulations. If deemed necessary the Captain would also pass these onto the Sciences and Medical divisions at his discretion.

“Engineering to Bridge.” T’Keterk tapped his badge.

“Go ahead, Lieutenant.” Emma replied. The Captain must still have been sequestered away in the Ready Room if Emma was the sole occupant of the bridge.

“I am wanting to arrange a quick meeting with yourself and Captain Suin at the Captain’s earliest convenience.” T’Keterk responded.

“Affirmative, Lieutenant.” Emma replied. “As soon as the Captain returns from the Mess Hall, I will inform him of your request. What is this in regards to?”

“I have some diagnostic results and simulations to update the Captain on before our arrival to Proto II.” T’Keterk finished.

“Copy that, T’Keterk. “Emma replied as the comm channel closed off.

T’Keterk tapped his badge one more time. “Lieutenant T’Keterk to Doctor Yates.”

“Go ahead Lieutenant.” Nora answered.

“Do you have availability for a quick discussion later this afternoon?” enquired T’Keterk.

“For you, my new Vulcan friend, I can make availability.” Nora answered, humour colouring her tone.

“That would be most agreeable.” T’Keterk replied. This would be his first proper meeting with the new Doctor and he wanted it to go well. He had of course reviewed her personnel file and was eager to draw on her years of experience. Now all that was left was the final wait for the simulation results.

Chapter 12 – Science Officers Log

USS Corax
Feb 2401

Slightly breathless from hurrying back to the Lab after his encounter with the Captain, Damien made directly for the attached office. Taking a seat behind the desk, he inhaled deeply and slowly exhaled. He couldn’t help but smile as he did so. Today was certainly going in his favour.

“Computer, new log entry.” Damien spoke aloud. “Science Officers Log, Damien Andrews recording. It’s been several days since we departed Starbase 93 for the Proteus system. Our assignment equal parts straight forward and direct and equal parts uncertainty. With the dissolution of the Romulan Star Empire, the situation in the former empire has many unknowns.”

Taking a breath to restructure his thoughts, Damien continued.

“The crew have been nothing but welcoming and almost family-like. They know when to be all business and when to relax and have a bit of a joke with eachother. I do see the beginnings of a good friendship with Doctor Yates, who I have graciously allowed access to the secondary lab on board for her to devote to researching the outbreak we are trying to quell.”

“I haven’t worked alongside Emma or T’Keterk much since arriving on board but if they are anything like the rest of the crew I don’t anticipate any problems or personality clashes with either of them and I look forward to working more closely with them both as our mission progresses.”

“The Captain, however, I find both fascinating and intimidating not entirely unrelated to a lifetime of memories and experiences he obtained when he joined with the Suin symbiote, but also the respect he commands and receives from his fellow crew. They trust eachother to do their jobs and there is no fear or hesitation when offering their opinions and thoughts. I do certainly want to get to know him better, I mean for goodness sake I almost fainted when he clapped me on the shoulder on his way out of the lounge.”

Damien had never fallen so hard and so fast for someone but it was almost a trait of his family. Trust your heart in these matters and it will never lead you astray. Taking a brief look at the chronometer he quickly spoke up. “Computer, end log.”

There was still much to be done before they arrived.

Chapter 13 – There Has Been A Change

USS Corax
Feb 2401

Aris found himself once again ensconced in his ready room after a quick meal with Damien. He found the encounter pleasant enough, the conversation coming easily, but altogether too brief. Quietly hoping it wouldn’t be the last time, Aris returned his focus to his paperwork. He was overall pleased with their progress so far. No requisition orders had been received and no areas of concerns highlighted.

Getting to his feet, Aris decided it was high time to return to the bridge and get an update on their situation. As the ready room doors slid open, Emma got to her feet.

“Captain on deck.”

“As you were, Emma.” Aris replied with a smile and a wave of his hand. Nodding, Emma returned to her post and turned to face Aris, all while keeping an eye on the console in front of her.

“Anything to report?” Aris asked as he took his seat after making sure Emma was situated before doing so.

“Negative, Captain.” Emma replied. “Holding steady at maximum warp, I forecast our arrival in approximately five days.” Taking a small breath, she added. “Lieutenant T’Keterk has also requested a meeting with the two of us, he is somewhere in the engineering section I believe.”

“Thank you, Ensign.” Aris replied. “Shall we get him up here and see what he has for us?”

Settling back in his chair, he tapped his badge opening up a channel. “Captain Suin to Lieutenant T’Keterk.”

“Go ahead, Captain.” T’Keterk’s voice replied.

“Please report to the bridge, Emma has informed me you have some developments to share.”

“Affirmative, Captain. I will be along shortly.” T’Keterk then closed the channel.

T’Keterk had just finished compiling his last diagnostic and simulation results when the Captain had requested he return to the bridge. Holding tightly to his padd, he exited the office that had been his home for several hours and headed directly for the nearest turbolift. Today was turning out to be rather busy but the information he was in possession of would assist the Captain with his decision making once they arrived. After a brief wait, the turbolift door opened, depositing T’Keterk outside the bridge.

Aris and Emma both turned when they heard the door to the bridge opening, revealing T’Keterk. “Captain.” he nodded as he retook his station.

“Lieutenant.” replied Aris. “Emma tells me you have some information for us.”

“Indeed, Captain. I have been taking this opportunity to run a few diagnostics and some simulations in anticipation of our arrival in the Proteus System.” T’Keterk continued. “All diagnostics have come back clean, however I have been running simulations to test efficiencies to our systems.” Tapping his console, he looked back up at Aris and Emma. “I have transmitted the results of these simulations to your terminals for perusal.”

“Thank you, Lieutenant.” Aris replied. “I’ll take these under advisement.”

Before the conversation could move further, an alert from the navigation console captured their attention. “Priority message being received from Starfleet Command, Sir.” Emma reported as she turned back to face her console.

“On screen, Ensign.” Aris replied as he straightened his uniform and sat a bit taller.

In a matter of moments Aris, T’Keterk and Emma were met with the sight of a member of the Admiralty. “Captain Suin, thank you for responding so promptly.”

“What can we do for you, Admiral.” Aris replied by way of greeting.

“Starfleet Intelligence has been reviewing reports out of Proteus in conjunction with Starfleet Medical.” The Admiral began, settling back in his own chair. “It is my duty to you inform you there has been a change to your orders.”

“What sort of change, Admiral.” Aris asked, a sense of unease now permeating through the bridge.

“It has been determined the USS Corax will not be sufficient to support the local populace.” the Admiral continued. “Your revised orders are to immediately alter course and divert to the following coordinates.”

Emma’s terminal beeped once indicating the receipt of updated course information.

“Admiral?” Aris cocked his head slightly, confusion mounting.

“Effective immediately you are being reassigned.” the Admiral deadpanned. “I have transmitted updated orders to your padds. You are to rendezvous with the referenced vessel and assume command on arrival before resuming your original course.”

“Understood, Admiral.” Aris replied as he looked to the shocked faces of T’Keterk and Emma.

“Oh and Captain?” the Admiral butt in. “By you, I am referring to you and your senior crew. A crew exchange will take place when you arrived at the rendezvous point.”

“Thank you, Admiral.” Aris replied with a small smile. “We will alter course immediately.”

“Go forth, Captain. We will be following your progress with interest.” the Admiral responded before closing the channel.

“Emma, alter course to the coordinates transmitted by the Admiral.” Aris sat back down and processed the new information for a moment. Mind made up, he opened up the shipwide communications channel.

“Attention all hands, this is the Captain.” taking a breath he decided to get it all out. “Our orders have been changed. We are immediately diverting course to rendezvous with another vessel upon which we will assume command on arrival. Please gather your personal belongings and any projects you are working on and prepare for a crew exchange on arrival. Please know my office is open should you need to talk about this.”

Closing the channel he looked to the two officers present with him.

“Course laid in.” Emma reported.

“Shall we?” Aris queried.

“At your order.” Emma smiled.

“Agreed.” T’Keterk replied. “Best not keep our new friends waiting.”
