The small utility shuttle Erie settled into the docking ring with a low hydraulic thrum, depositing Lieutenant Junior Grade Cassian Sterling straight into a wall of noise and nervous energy. Starbase Bravo was colossal, but today the station felt less like a deep-space port and more like a pressure cooker. Visiting inspectors in crisp uniforms stood on the gantries with blue PADDs, stopwatch-timing atmospheric cycles, checking dockworker credentials, and cross-referencing cargo manifests against century-old fleet standards.

Cassian adjusted the shoulders of his duty jacket, pulled up his orders, and set off toward Medical Logistics Command. He was here to integrate into the station’s supply team and begin advanced practical training in regional medical distribution. Finding the office, however, turned out to be his first real hurdle.

The nearest primary turbolift bank had been shut down for a surprise power-grid test. Rerouted through a cramped secondary passage, Cassian navigated a maze of busy corridors, eventually reaching a sub-level Supply Liaison Office only to find its hatch locked. A handwritten note taped to the door frame read: “Relocated to Ops Annex 7 due to Readiness Audit.”

When he finally located Annex 7, he walked straight into a wall of an administrative hullabaloo. A harassed Bajoran lieutenant commander sat behind a desk buried under digital manifests. She didn’t bother looking up as Cassian approached. “If you’re an inspector, the bio-waste disposal files are on Terminal B,” she muttered, rubbing her temples. “If you’re staff, take a number. The entire staging queue for this sector’s medical imports froze 20 minutes ago because someone used an outdated customs code on a shipment of sterile plasma.”

“Customs code 882-Delta?” Cassian asked her quietly.

The lieutenant commander blinked, finally lifting her eyes from her desk. “How did you know that?”

“It’s a legacy classification conflict,” Cassian said, stepping closer and setting his own PADD on the corner of her workspace. “The station’s computer defaults to the regional Starfleet Medical database, but this sector’s customs still operates on the Beta Quadrant Commercial Exchange index. The inspectors flagged the batch because 882-Delta was reclassified under an amended accord last year. The transport bay locks down automatically until the cross-reference gets cleared.”

The lieutenant commander stared at him. “Can we bypass it without waiting 3 hours for a duty officer?”

“You don’t need a full override,” Cassian said. “May I?”

She hesitated for a split second before sliding the secondary terminal toward him. Cassian leaned over the interface, his fingers working across the touch controls with a quiet efficiency. Where others saw a frustrating roadblock, his mind instinctively mapped the underlying framework, tracing the data flow to find the disconnect.

Within a minute, he isolated the mismatch, applied a standard Federation diplomatic tariff waiver to bridge the two classification codes, and routed the updated manifest back into the dockmaster’s automated queue.

On the wall monitor behind the desk, the flashing red quarantine warning for Transport Bay 12 shifted to a steady green.

The lieutenant commander let out a long breath and tapped her badge to cancel an alert to her supervisor. She pulled up Cassian’s assignment file, looking at him with a mix of genuine relief and newfound curiosity. “Who did you say you were again?”

“Lieutenant Sterling,” he said, offering a polite, professional smile. “Reporting for operations and medical logistics duty. I am looking for work.”

“Well, Lieutenant,” she said, leaning back in her chair. “Welcome to Starbase Bravo. I think you’re going to fit in just fine.”

Great start. I like his quiet efficiency. A nice quick bit of banter with a new crewmate. I'm intrigued by the Medical Logistics angle, from a purely factoid nerd POV. Well done.
