The doors to the ready room parted, and the low murmur of bridge activity fell away at once.

“Captain on the bridge,” announced Commander Salazar from the joint tactical and security station.

Everyone rose as Captain Duncan stepped out and crossed onto the bridge of the Whirlwind for the first time as her commanding officer. He gave a small gesture for them to resume their duties before he had even reached the command well.

“Report.”

The Whirlwind’s bridge was smaller than Odyssey’s, more intimate in its layout, with a compact circular design that brought every station into closer conversation with the command well. Freshly restored bulkheads curved around the room in clean lines of soft grey, while the muted blue carpet and cushioned flooring gave the rebuilt space a welcome sense of warmth underfoot. At Duncan’s insistence, the ship had been restored with comfort in mind as much as efficiency. He had no interest in cold, metallic minimalism. This was to be a working home, not a showroom.

“All systems are online, sir,” Fenton reported from operations.

“Warp and impulse engines are standing by,” Hunsen added from engineering.

Duncan slowed for half a heartbeat as he reached the command platform. The chair waiting for him was new, but everything it represented was not. Responsibility. Trust. Risk. Another ship full of lives was placed in his hands. He lowered himself into the seat at last, feeling the quiet weight of the moment settle with him.

Beside him, his husband, his first officer, settled into his chair with a look of quiet satisfaction that only deepened when Duncan finally sat. Court grinned at him.

It was still a strange and hopeful thing, Duncan thought, seeing familiar faces from different corners of the Odyssey and its squadron now gathered here together, no longer as visitors or temporary support, but as the Whirlwind’s people.

“All decks report, ready, captain,” Court said, unable to suppress his smirk.

“Thank you,” Duncan looked at his husband before smiling at him, “Number One.”  Duncan turned to look at Horin, who was sitting to his left. “How’s the crew adjusting, counsellor?”

Horin looked up from her position, composed as ever. “They are settling in well, sir, but I believe a mission is exactly what this crew needs now. Something to focus on. Something to move us forward together.”

Duncan nodded. That was very much his own thinking. He glanced over his shoulder towards Doctor Dorin, who stood near the rear station beside her wife. “Doctor, do you agree?”

Dorin folded her arms lightly and gave a single nod. “The sooner we get moving, the healthier it will be for everyone.”

“Very good.” Duncan turned then to the science station.

Bollwyn looked perfectly at home there already, one hand hovering over his console before he pushed his blond hair back with an absent flick of his fingers.

“Lieutenant Bollwyn,” Duncan said, “are our science teams ready to begin this next chapter of exploration?”

The young Ventaxian flashed his usual boyish grin. “Eager to do so, sir. I would say, we are ready to boldly go where no one has gone before!”

From operations, Fenton let out the faintest sigh at Bollwyn’s shameless theft of the Federation flagship’s most famous line.

Duncan, however, chuckled.

“Then let’s not keep the future waiting.” He shifted his gaze. “Lieutenant Fenton, inform the Odyssey we are ready to move out and request permission from Captain Reyas for us to join the squadron’s formation.”

Fenton nodded smartly over his console. “Aye, sir.”

A few seconds passed. Then he looked back up. “Message received, Captain. Captain Reyas gives us permission to join the squadron formation, and Commodore McCallister is apparently eager for us all to get underway.”

Duncan turned toward the helm. “Miss Kimas, bring us into formation with the squadron and prepare to engage the warp drive.”

“Course laid in, sir,” Kimas replied.

Duncan looked ahead.

At the viewscreen. At the stars. At the bridge around him. At the people now trusting him to lead them.

This ship had been broken. So had much of her crew. But both had survived. With one more smile, Duncan took in a deep breath and spoke in a clear and commanding tone.

“Engage.”

The Whirlwind moved out smoothly, gliding into position beside Odyssey and the rest of the squadron.

For one brief moment, Duncan watched the line of ships ahead of him and felt something steady and certain settle into place.

Hope.

Then the stars stretched into brilliant white, and the squadron leapt to warp together, carrying the newly restored Whirlwind forward into whatever came next.

Its new story had started.
