The USS Hotspur (NCC-89888) is an Inquiry-class Federation starship assigned to Fourth Fleet Operations. Assigned to Tannhäuser Flotilla and under the command of Captain Teodor Borodin, the Hotspur is part of the unit’s expeditionary wing, Endeavour Squadron, where she serves as the primary tactical vessel for the unit. As part of a squadron charged not only with responding to emergent situations across the galaxy, but also furthering Federation exploration and diplomatic interests in the Midgard Sector, the Hotspur’s duties are more than simply military or deterrence.

While she is the first to be deployed when Starfleet wishes to make a show of force, protect its borders or allies, or undertake peacekeeping operations, the versatile nature of the Hotspur ensures a varied mission profile. She is equally capable of undertaking scientific or exploratory missions in dangerous areas or bearing diplomatic delegates into volatile regions. Much of her day-to-day within the Midgard Sector includes scoping out the activities of local warlords, who are more likely to need a diplomatic response than a military one – but such diplomacy is best achieved from a position of strength. Likewise, she routinely runs joint operations with the Romulan Republic, shoring up its defences and training and supporting its military in maintaining regional security – especially with the ongoing risk of incursion by forces of the Klingon Empire. Such operations require a versatile crew and captain capable of meeting a range of challenges, conscious of when force is needed – and when its application could be disastrous.

Tannhäuser Expeditionary Flotilla

Tannhäuser Expeditionary Flotilla, also known as Tannhäuser Flotilla, is a formation of the Fourth Fleet centred on the Typhoon-class USS Tannhäuser. Under the command of Vice Admiral Owen Morgan, the flotilla is the primary Starfleet force responsible for the Midgard Sector and headquarters at Gateway Station, which provides logistical, operational, and administrative support. While the bulk of the unit focuses on the Federation interior, border, and local diplomacy, the expeditionary wing operates in the territories of the Old Romulan Star Empire, and is available for deployment in response to emergent situations across the galaxy.

Led by the flagship Tannhäuser, the flotilla is divided into three units:

– Endeavour Squadron: The expeditionary unit, to which the flotilla’s most advanced ships and elite crews are assigned. The squadron’s routine operations focus beyond the Federation border of the Midgard Sector: deep-space exploration of former Star Empire territories, diplomacy and outreach to old imperial worlds, and support for local Romulan Republic operations. Then the Fourth Fleet is deployed to respond to emergent situations, the flotilla usually dispatches the expeditionary squadron.

– Redemption Squadron: The interior unit of the flotilla, prioritising Starfleet’s mission supporting the Midgard Sector, Gateway Station, and Federation interests within and near the border. The squadron conducts patrols, shores up border security, and provides support and outreach to local worlds, Federation and otherwise.

– Memphis Division: The dedicated scientific unit, combining active field research – stellar surveys and charting, planetary study, and specialist archaeological and anthropological investigation – with deep analysis of data from other missions and ships, and long-term scientific research.

In times of need, ships from either squadron may provide assistance or be temporarily seconded to the other’s command – most commonly if Endeavour Squadron requires additional firepower or specialist support.

Since its formation in 2400, the unit has been at the forefront of some of the Fourth Fleet’s most urgent situations of the 25th century, including the Lost Fleet crisis of 2401, and played a crucial role in the defence of Alpha Centauri during the invasion of the Vaadwaur Supremacy in 2402. It is assigned directly to Fourth Fleet Operations and not one of the fleet’s task forces, though is often favoured by Director of Fourth Fleet Intelligence Admiral Alexander Beckett for special assignments.

‘It’s not on the map,’ said Borodin. ‘Dunes change all the time. This is a ground assessment.’ Yves had the PADD tilted against the glare as he drove the buggy across the slopes of the dunes, the wheels finding the firm surface between crests. The sands of Colludia IV’s second moon [...]

The skiing was fine – better than fine, in the end. The slope below the hire station was open and wind-packed, the kind that punished hesitation but rewarded commitment, which suited Teo Borodin completely. Once he’d found his pace, the mountain moved beneath him with a cold, clean speed [...]
