Operations Office Report – #30 – RPG Update

January 28, 2024

Hello Bravo Fleet!

The Operations Office is happy to announce some news about our roleplaying game opportunities. We are pleased to announce the launch of two new RPGs today and an update to the Roleplaying Game and Sandbox Policy.

USS Hathaway

Under Captain Romaes Anjin‘s (aka Kai on Discord) command, the USS Hathaway is setting sail to explore Federation space and beyond. Watch this space as this group of Bravo Fleet members start their new journey, working on some creative collaborations.

The Hathaway‘s Game Proposal has been one of the first to come forward from a group of members who wish to collaborate together. This was a really great way of doing it instead of it coming from one person. Collectively they have decided on the type of stories they want to write (basing their first mission plot on one of our premade RPG suggestions) and have decided as a group the direction of their game. If this is something you and other members wish to explore, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us about it. The Operations Office wish them all the best as they begin this new journey together. We hope you all have a lot of fun!

USS Pioneer

The Operations Office is also happy to share the relaunch of the USS Pioneer – our first Table Top Role Playing Game. It will now be managed by Task Force 47’s Executive Officer, Commander Varen Wyll (aka Grey on Discord). Grey has been working hard to develop this project further, something we are really excited about seeing. It is still in its preliminary phase, so he is looking for members to join the Pioneer for a test run. Below are the details for those who are interested:

  1. Pioneer will be a live play TTRPG for a group of 6 players, in universe we will be exploring the Talvath Cluster to the north of the Beta Quadrant by playing out scenes, live, as a group.
  2. Initially, we will be running 3 taster sessions for interested players to learn the system, experience some gameplay, and determine whether they are interested in joining the game at large.
  3. Pioneer will be a live play TTRPG played through Discord for voice and Roll20 for a virtual tabletop; more information about Roll20 is available here (https://roll20.net/). Members will need a free Roll20 account setup to play the game. Instructions will be provided when the test play is scheduled.
  4. Pioneer will use the Star Trek Adventures game system from Modiphius, a free quickstart guide is available here (https://preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/product/222948/Star-Trek-Adventures-Quickstart) members interested in playing should look over it. Don’t worry if its confusing, Full guidance will be given during play.
  5. All play, including the taster sessions, will follow the play rules as outlined on the Pioneer RPG page. Please review them before submitting an application.
  6. Applications for the playtest should be made via the Pioneer RPG page in BFMS. You will require a character on BFMS. This can be as complete or as generic as you like. Whilst a writing sample is not required, please include the following;
    • A quick character pitch for the playtest (e.g. A young Vulcan engineer with a fascination for robotics / An experienced Bolian doctor with a fear of shuttles / A human commander with one eye who loves history books); this should include a character name and any special requests. The GM will then produce a suitable test character sheet for the playtest.
    • A preferred date of playtest from the following options: SUN 11th February, SUN 18th February, SUN 25th February 2024
    • A brief summary of your RPG and TTRPG/Liveplay experience; this could be with any game set such as D&D, Call of Cthulu, etc.
    • Your Discord username, email & how you would like to be addressed as a person.
    • The closing date for applications to play test will be Sunday, the 4th; Grey will be in contact with play test offers that week.

Questions are always welcome in our new Discord area.

For actual play, video will not be required, but a strong and clear audio connection is required. A stable internet connection will be required to use Discord & Roll20 simultaneously. N.B Test sessions will follow the same structure as the live game, starting at 5 pm GMT and running till approx. 8 pm GMT on a Sunday.

Update to the RPG and Sandbox Policy

We have also streamlined the RPG and Sandbox Policy, with more of a focus on our writing RPGs. As a result, the significant changes include:

  • Changes to RPG Game Management Cooling Off Periods have been halved.
  • Writing RPG Proposals now only requires one mission submission.
  • Removal of custom non-2400 era games. For now, we are focussing on supporting 2400 era-based proposals.
