Operating out of Bastion Station, in the Betazed Sector, Challenger Flotilla is a multi-mission unit assigned to Starfleet’s Fourth Fleet. Originally formed as Challenger Squadron in January 2401, the unit was intended for long-term exploration of the Gamma Quadrant. Events, however, forced a rethink.
The early years of the 25th Century saw the Alpha and Beta Quadrants lurching from one crisis to another. Following the invasion of the Deneb Sector by the Dominion’s Lost Fleet, it was decided to recall Challenger Squadron. Since then, Challenger Squadron has been involved in the collapse of what remained of the Romulan Star Empire, the Vaadwaur invasion of the Alpha and Beta Quadrants and the exploration of the Shakelton Expanse.
In mid-2403, Challenger Squadron was reorganised. Now designated Challenger Flotilla, this elite unit is capable of taking on whatever tasks Fourth Fleet Command, or galactic events, can throw at it. Challenger Flotilla is organised into Ark Royal and Cygnus Squadrons, with the USS Challenger operating as an independent flagship.
Rear Admiral Elara Morez and her staff are based on the Flotilla’s headquarters, Bastion Station, but can transfer her flag to the Challenger when the situation demands it. Challenger’s commanding officer, Commodore Tarven Rix, doubles up as the Flotilla’s deputy commander.
