These events pre-date the Crossroads Fleet Action
The trip to Montana Station had been a three week long jaunt aboard a Federation courier vessel. Lizzy, had accepted the job at the Rimward Report a few months before. It was not long after her investigation into what had occurred between the Sheliak, Tholians, and the Federation at the tri-border areas Rhontaka System. In the meantime she had made a few short hops back towards the interior of Federation space, stopping at a few scenic locales to broadcast her holocasts. While on Sevaritta III she had gotten some hot leads about Starfleet and its allies covering up a rash of incidents that had occured deep in the Beta Quadrant region known as the Shackleton Expanse, and had garnered some traction and a large tranche of new subscribers as a result.
The tips had come from a trusted source of hers that was a well placed Intel Officer assigned to Starbase 72. They had hinted at a series of missteps and diplomatic incidents that had led to open combat in more then a few cases. Infact, Lizzy was almost certain that the job offer from the RR, which she had learned that FNN had recommended her for(though she had left the organizations and gone freelance nearly 2 years prior) was a low key attempt to steer her away from heading to the Beta Quadrant and investigating the leads.
As the small fast civilian courier vessel slid into its docking slip at the Canopus class station, McNizzy had her bags with her and was waiting at the ships airlock. If she was going to do something, as always, she was going to put her best foot forward and throw herself right into it.
Beatrice Thorne looked out on the newsroom, her eyes resting on each of the new people she had placed in positions. They’d added fifty in the last few weeks – stringers, researchers, and writers. Getting an understanding of the state of the rimward, even as it shifted daily, was a key element of the Rimward Report’s mission. She’d met with Craig Syracuse yesterday, and he was already working on several stories of his own creation.
That left Lizzy McNizzy. She was coming from Federation space and had to take the long way around. Now, Thorne sat in her office, perusing the latest rumor reports for any kind of sign of the week they’d be having.
Elizabeth McNaughton strolled into the large sprawling open air concept newsroom that would be here new haunt. Atleast until she quit or got herself fired that was.
As she approached the large semi-circular receptionist desk with a rather large Rigellian lady who was busy on a comms call via her sleek, new model headset and ear piece. She waited patiently as the woman finished her call, “Hi, I’m one of the new hires, today is my first day, can you point me to my office please…”
“Sure, Ms. McNizzy, you are in one of the offices on the upper level, right there.” The receptionist said as she pointed to one of the corners on the second floor concourse of offices, interview rooms, boardrooms and the like.
“Thanks.” Lizzy said as she walked over to the curving staircase that led up to that wing of the newsroom. She wasn’t completely suprised that the receptionist knew who she was, but still, it was a show of respect that she appreciated in the moment.
“Corner office, nice.” As she walked along the frontage of the row of offices she noticed the Editors office and made a point to pop in and meet her after dropping off her bags. She stopped infront of the office the receptionist had point to and noted the placard on the door read ‘Lizzy McNizzy, Arts and Culture Correspondent’. She activated the door and walked into a decent sized L shaped corner office with a desk, work station, couch and small round interview table and 2 chairs.
After dropping off her small case of artwork, memento’s and designer padds, she input a lock code on her door and headed over to meet her new boss. After a quick walk down the upper walkway she chimed the door to the Editor in Chiefs office.
Thorne looked up from the copy she was editing, marking the place where she’d left off. “Enter.”
“Hi. I’m Lizzy, one of your new correspondents, I think we talked on subspace a few weeks back.”
Beatrice returned the handshake and took her seat, motioning for her new reporter to do the same. “Welcome to Montana Station, Lizzy. You’ve seen your office, and the station at large. What do you think so far?”
“Beats the inside of a Cormorant class courier, ha. They’re meant for speed, not luxury. Seems like a nice enough place though. Truth be told I haven’t spent much time on a Canopus class station before, certainly never lived on one.” The plucky redheaded replied.
Thorne smiled widely. “Well, they’re just one size removed from a Spacedock class. It’s a small town that’s got a lot of visitors these days. And lots of stories.” She handed over a PADD. “Some items that may interest you or be worth chasing down. More and more stories coming in every week with every transport, starship and shuttle.”
“Right on. Thanks. I’m looking forward to the opportunity.” Lizzy was about to ask about deadlines and the publishing schedule for the outfit but noticed that the info was already lated out on the padd her boss had just given her. She turned and headed back to her office.
