Part of Bravo Fleet: Shore Leave 2403

Starbase Bravo

A Taste of Every Home

Starbase Bravo has hosted dignitaries, diplomats, and defectors. It’s been, however, a while since it hosted a festival.

Mission Description

Starbase Bravo has hosted dignitaries, diplomats, and defectors. It’s been, however, a while since it hosted a festival.

For four weeks, that changes.

While the Fourth Fleet converges in the Colludia System, Starbase Bravo opens its lounges and cargo bays to celebrate. The Cultural Exchange Festival brings cuisine, music, art, religion, and dozens of traditions from Federation member worlds and beyond into close proximity. Vulcan meditation chimes share a corridor with a Tellerite debate circle. A Bajoran spice vendor sets up across from a human ramen stall run by a Klingon. Somewhere, recently returned researchers talk about Brynar’s wedding ceremonies.

There is no crisis. There is no threat. The worst thing likely to happen this month is people feeling mild regret over a third helping of something they couldn’t even pronounce, or an argument about whose homeworld version of a folk song is the ‘real’ one.

That is, in fact, the point. After the Crossroads Fleet Action and Stress Test, Starbase Bravo becomes a place people want to be, rather than a place they’re stationed at.

Departments

Command and Diplomatic Affairs

It’s all about protocol: greeting visiting delegations, fielding requests from cultural liaisons, and absorbing the occasional diplomatic incident caused not by malice, but by two cultures discovering they have incompatible ideas about who is allowed to refuse a gift. Senior officers may find themselves drafted as guests of honor at events they don’t fully understand the etiquette for, which is its own kind of comedy.

Security

Security deals with crowds flowing through the corridors, a few new faces to badge-check, the inevitable vendor permit dispute over who gets the corner spot near the observation window, and confiscating something flammable from a performance act that involves, well, fire.

Operations and Engineering

The festival asks more of the station’s infrastructure than its defenses: replicator banks programmed for dishes that have never been replicated before and don’t always come out right the first time, environmental systems adjusted for three different species’ comfort ranges in adjacent booths, and a cargo bay converted into performance space.

Science and Medical

Less directly involved than other departments, but not absent. People may sample cuisine that doesn’t agree with them, or discover that Andorian ice-skating takes actual practice.

Scientists might be delighted to have new cultures to explore and new arguments to get into, or explain to a sceptical crewmate why a custom that looks strange actually makes perfect sense once you understand its history.

Civilians, Visitors, and the festival itself

This is where the actual story lives, Stallholders from dozens of worlds. A performance schedule running almost around the clock between three venues. A visiting family who has never set foot on a Starfleet installation, wandering past officers in uniform like they’re part of the scenery. A cafe owner who has been saving a family recipe for an occasion exactly like this one. A crew member who finds a stall representing their home world is run by someone they grew up two streets from.

What this offers

For individual characters, this offers a low-pressure environment to be curious, homesick, embarrassingly moved or simply off-duty in public. Perhaps you discover a hobby or a sport for yourself. Perhaps you find that your culture’s sacred ritual has been turned into a tourist photo opportunity, and have feelings about it. Perhaps you just want to eat everything within reach.

For groups, this offers shared meals, shared mistakes, and shared discoveries – the festival is built for joint scenes that don’t require a shared objective, just a shared booth, queue, or table. In other words, the easiest possible excuse for members of different departments to collide.

Crustacean Corruption

Starbase Bravo: A Taste of Every Home

Dawa stumbled a bit in the thick, purple sand that covered the beach. The number of Mai Tai’s she’d thrown back only had a little to do with that, though they were certainly the main reason she’d lost both her sandals in the dunes hours ago. The booze had made her briefly maudlin enough to [...]

Wait, is he a Face, or a Heel?

Starbase Bravo: A Taste of Every Home

“80.” Traan said as he tossed the chips into the middle of the table. He had started to make a habit of stopping by Renaks Casino and playing poker for a few hours every couple of nights. Currently, he was riding pocket bullets with a decent sized pot at the Hold ’em [...]
