[Phase 3]: Fun With Flags

Description

Now so many worlds have become independent from the Romulan Star Empire, beginning their new lives as a brand new nation means they must determine an identity of their own. To assist with this, you will pick a Romulan world that has declared its independence (the world your avatar ship has visited would be good) and create a brand new flag for them to fly.

Any graphics based program can be used or an online flag creator, including:

https://tennessine.co.uk/flags/

https://flag-designer.appspot.com/

Criteria

  • Submit a design of a brand new flag for your Romulan world.
  • Entries will be judged using the following scoring system: Originality of design - 10 points Creative use of colour - 10 points Use of a logo - 10 points
  • A rationale behind each flag design, no longer than 500 words, to explain the design and why certain colours/features of the design exist must be submitted alongside the image of the flag. This will be judged out of 10 points based on a clear explanation of the thinking behind the design of the flag.
  • The winner will be the winner with the highest score of points. If a tie-breaker is needed, then an extra 5 points will be used to judge to see how realistic the flag would be in the Trek universe.

Romulan Flag

I went back to the first design seen in TOS with the red raptor, thinking the Romulans would recall their roots with their new beginning. So, I chose the color red from that first Romulan ship in “Balance of Terror”. The raptor design is inspired by the Roman symbol along with the lightning bolts for power and the wheat, a symbol for renewal. The blue and green is a callback to the old Romulan Star Empire emblem. The yellow or orange is a sunrise, representing a new day, again, renewal. There is a hint of the Phoenix with the combination of reds and yellows (fire) within the raptor.

The red is for bravery, the blue is for fidelity, and the white represents loyalty, all the best characteristics of the Romulans. The black is simply for contrast; blue didn't look well.

The gold seal is the Federation's seal for the Romulan people, and is shown here in a burnt gold seal to represent the loss they've suffered. I chose the name Valcaria for one of the Romulan worlds I read about and like (I don't play STO so I went off some of the unofficial books.

This flag is for a dissident world of Romulans who do not believe the Romulans are right. The design is that of what you might see on a rebel flag. The colors contrast the regular green which still shows the group is Romulan while the black shows they disagree with the true Romulan empire.

The skull shows they are not to be messed with and will still attack if provoked the colors to clearly show the skull as proof of what they believe. The white behind stands for the purity they believe they can bring from the filth of the RSE.

The flag is flown by Kunhri IV

The yellow is the color of the sun where the black is the vastness of space. The red is the station itself, spherical shape was really the better choice to represent the mining station on the large asteroid and the green fist is the combined forces of Remans and Romulans rising up against their oppressors, the Romulans or Administrators of the Star Empire.

The flag of Rhijun's main color is green which when one thinks of it represents Romulans, though they were once a part of the Star Empire. It reminds them of where they were and of a place they are free from. This is a reminder to never turn back and to keep on going. The tree represents growth and independence, a tree that is planted reminds them of growth. They went from a little sapling struggling to become independent, but with the help of the Federation and the Republic that sapling begins to grow into a strong tree able to withstand anything that comes their way.

The flag chosen by the leaders of the Revolution in the Oumoren System, after the successful overthrow of their Imperial Governor, bears special meaning for the revolution, for Reman heritage, and for the Oumoren System’s hope as a truly independent system with its own government, laws, and respected territory.

The Oumoren flag consists of highly traditional Romulan colors, but with a pronounced gold bordering that differentiates from the Romulan Imperial silver-tone aesthetic. This gold bordering is composed of intersecting gold lines and nine stars: two top-middle, two lower-middle, one at center-fly, and one at center-hoist, as well as three unique corners. The two fly-side corners, and the lower hoist-side corner, feature different star designs. The nine stars refer to the nine planets in the Oumoren system, and the three unique stars refer to the three inhabited planets in the Oumoren system.

On the flag’s gradated teal-green field is the device of a Reman bird of prey sporting one unique wing-feather. The bird of prey is reminiscent of Romulan style, and is considered a depiction of strength and power. The singular feather is a reminder of the Oumoren system’s dream of existing as a fully independent State, with its own laws, borders, and government.

The flag’s canton is framed by two intersecting gold lines. In the canton’s center are three elements: a circle surrounded by 67 stars, a sword and a pick, crossed at the hafts, and a pair of white spread wings beneath. The 67 stars represent the average number of Reman workers who died each year due to the appalling working conditions. The sword and pick describe the worker’s rebellion, which included many of the low-class Romulans who were treated almost as poorly as the Reman slaves, and who joined with the Reman miners in rebellion. The spread wings are both a symbol of peace, and a reminder of the Reman and Romulan shared heritage as distant descendants of Vulcan.

The Independent flag holds three elements upon a dark blue background: the primary symbol of a white phoenix within the gold rings of Matec, along with recognition of the Reman guild asteroids.

This flag pays homage to their Romulan heritage with a slightly altered Romulan emblem. A white phoenix represents freedom from the oppressive Romulan regime and white coloring for new beginnings. The bird is flying free from its cage. The gold rings of Matec highlights the centralized planet and unofficial capital of this independent system.
The six small spheres represent the Unified Reman Guild in the asteroid field. The colors of the planets are symbolic of resilience, valor, and caution.

Planetary flag for Daloon IV.

A white-edged blue diagonal bend, dividing diagonally from the lower hoist-side corner, with an upper black triangle and a dark green lower triangle. A star device in the upper hoist-side triangle with a jade raptor device overtop. The shield of the House of L'rilt sits in the lower fly-side.

The green triangle represents the verdant plains and habitable nature of Daloon, guarded over by the House of L'rilt as the near-constant Magistrates of Daloon. The blue diagonal bend represents the clear skies of Daloon and its shield against the vacuum of space, represented by the upper black triangle. The Star and Raptor, a common design at the time of settlement, represents the Raptor of Romulus watching over Daloon and keeping the world safe. The jade raptor's talons are red with the blood of the Romulan people's enemies, signifying the Raptor's commitment to keeping its subjects safe.

The shield of the House of L'rilt is a simple gold-edged red shield in quadrants with a tower in the upper left and a silver sword in the lower right. This represents martial might in ages past but has come to represent the stalwartness of the modern house, with the downward angle of the sword indicative of a desire to turn swords into ploughshares.

While many have called for a new flag for Daloon, in particular removing the raptor device and possibly the House of L’rilt’s coat of arms, this call is of less importance currently than navigating the fallout of an attempted coup, an entire civil change of regime type, opening relations with the Romulan Republic and securing the future of Daloon going forward.

In these troublesome and turbulent times, the flag of Daloon serves at least in some capacity as a continuation of the yearned for peace and surety of times past.

This flag for my fictitious Romulan Empirical Union is a vertical flag. It boasts a Phoenix, rather than the traditional Romulan Bird of Prey, since the Phoenix is known to have been reborn from the ashes of its own demise. The Phoenix is speckled with starts representing the constellation in which the REU homeworld resides. From bottom to top, the colors represent (WHITE) the supernova destroying the Romulan homeworld, (Red) the resulting fire and blood and pain of the Romulan people driven from their homes, (GREEN) the color of Romulan blood, and (BLACK) the Romulan return to space in search of another home. The writing from top to bottom reads "From Fire, Comes Life." This flag has a golden trim stitching around the perimeter.

The flag of Romulan Free State protectorate Foshir III clearly demonstrates both the ferocity and power projection capabilities of the new government. The bird of prey's prominent eyes represent the watchfulness of the Tal Shiar, while laser eye-beams remind all citizens of the Free State's might. The meaningful symbolism of this flag makes the unassailable nature of the Free State administration utterly clear to all who lay eyes upon it.

The green and the blue of the flag represent the muggy, swampy surface across much of KUNHRI III. Reman civilians take comfort in the swamp lands with their often-cloudy skies, and the government has begun to believe in Starfleet Captain Taes' affirmations that their future relies on greater synchronicity with the renewable environment of Kunhri itself. Although the swaths of green and blue take up the most surface area --much like the swamps themselves-- the wheel is at the forefront, in place of pride. The wheel represents Kunhri's unending commitment to industry: this includes their promise to deliver products to their customers, along with their promise to maintain excellent living conditions for the citizens. The white slash across the flag represents a break in the history of Kunhri. There was a before-time when enforced labour was permitted and now is the after-time, when there is freedom for all. Any Romulan government, propaganda or iconography exist in that white slash: dead and long forgotten.

This is the flag for Alth’ndor IV. The black squares represent the reman population while the green squares represent the Romulan population. The orange diamond in the center represents the planet and the prime resource , dilithium. The gold tower in the center represents the solidarity of the two populations coming together and work as one people.
