Dissent and Protest

Description

Star Trek has a history of political themes, particularly those that examine protests, dissent, and activism on alien worlds, often serving as a proxy to shed light on humanity’s own past. Sometimes those alien worlds are unhappy to see Starfleet or representatives of the Federation.

This competition is to create a poster protesting at the presence of not only Starfleet but of your crew interfering in an alien society.

Criteria

  • Submissions should the form of an image (jpg, gif, png) in a vertical poster format with a maximum file size of 1MB and be uploaded in the submission window on BFMS.
  • Submissions should be accompanied by a brief explanation of what the protest is about, the context behind the mission or action that has given rise to the poster. This should be no longer than a 300 words.
  • The winning poster will be judged on: presentation and design; originality; and adherence to the theme.

Each character was animated individually using DAZ3D software, along with the LCARS style panel. These citizens are a race called the Renao. The book series, Star Trek: Prometheus, introduced them. In book two, The Root of All Rage, we learn several Renao were tortured by Klingon Captain Kromm upon suspicion of being part of the extremist antagonist group of the series. It turns out they were innocent. Kromm was driven by the maddening environmental effects of the Lembatta system's nebula. This protest shows Renao storming the USS Prometheus in fiery protest. The angering effects of that system are also likely affecting the protestors. The Renao are described as red-complexioned, with black hair. I played a little with hair and skin tones. The dark complexion is based on the same red color as the other male, modified towards more gold than pink undertones.

It is a 3 foot by 5 foot large poster. This was found on the ground after the Cetacean Rights protest of 2402 on San Francisco harbour. Cetaceans from all over the world and even from off world attended this protest. They were sick and tired of their crewmates not coming skinny dipping with them more often. The crew of the Blythe looked on in horror as they loved their alien crewmates

For me this was about Starfleet 'checking in' on those civilisations that aren't necessarily isolationist but are happy without UFP interference in their own internal affairs.
Instilling the Federations laws and policies upon civilisations that don't align with those doesn't always work. Each is it's own entity and the populace may see their governments talking to Starfleet as the Federation trying to remove their individuality and freedoms to be who they are.

My image represents a Dominion propaganda poster - protesting the pending 5-year mission of the Lamarr - class USS Vega to the Gamma Quadrant. With the Federation reeling from the events of Frontier Day & the Blackout, Starfleet is forced to look further afield for new friends and allies - forcing Task Force 72 to mount a contentious mission of diplomacy and discovery, returning through the Bajoran Wormhole to the contested GQ. Whilst the Founders have withdrawn behind their borders since the close of the Dominion War, they keep a jealous watch, knowing that all it will take is one misstep and conflict may ignite again.

Original image constructed using composite of Lamaar - class starship from STO & enhanced through MS Paint and MS PowerPoint.
