[Nightfall]: Red Alert: Battle Plan

Description

Marshal your ships to stem the tide of a potential Vaadwaur attack. Formulate a defensive battle plan using one squadron belonging to a team member (or your team’s ships if you lack a squadron) that would be circulated among your ships to minimize loss and secure a planetary location you have been charged with protecting.

Criteria

  • Entries must be created by one (1) to four (4) members, who are not part of any other team participating in this competition. Members may only be a part of one (1) team.
Each member of the team must contribute a reasonable amount of effort, with a summary of each member's contributions as well as their profile ID numbers provided with the entry.
Entries should be submitted in .pdf format, if you want to submit in another format please check and as long as it can be opened and graded we’ll try and work with you.
No Google Drive folder/document links or word document files, please download as a .pdf using "File" -> "Download/Save as" -> "PDF Document (.pdf)" for submission.
ALL TEAM MEMBERS MUST SUBMIT to the competition for credit, even if only one member actually submits your entry. If you aren't submitting the entry, simply submit an entry with the members of your team.
  • Battle plans can only utilize a single member’s squadron (or the collective ships of the team members if no member possesses more than two ships) to formulate a clear defensive strategy.
Battle plans will provide command and control for the defensive operations, such that the plan will provide necessary guidance to navigate the uncertainty and disorder created by the enemy's attacks. Some examples include space superiority in certain locations, evacuations, defensive perimeters/lines, etc. This battle plan would be circulated among the assigned vessels as the defensive plan of action.
Entries can include both written content and graphics. Images to illustrate the plan as well as graphical formatting of the content is highly encouraged.
  • Grading will be broken down into the following categories: Presentation (30%), Continuity & Realism (30%), Planning & Tactics (40%)
Any sourced images/graphics that the team does not directly create must be attributed to their source.
  • NOTE: This competition is being co-organized with Teylas Ramar.

Welcome to the Vaabanth system. This image was created through a Solar System Generator at FantasyNameGenerators.com. I edited the image with standard HP software. The image seems relatively small, so I'll orient you to the meaning of each dot without extensive labels. First, note Vaabanth III is to the left and Vaabanth IV is to the right. Descriptions are broken down into quadrants relating to their corner of the respective planet. The Right Quadrants of Vaabanth III and Left Quadrants of Vaabanth IV form an inner corridor the convoy is centered to defend from the Vaadwaur.

Vaabanth III
-Home to a pre-warp civilization with no orbital defenses and minimal small arms development on the surface. Starfleet does not plan to make contact yet. The Brawley hopes to avoid them altogether, though Vaadwaur attacks have already disturbed the locals.

Vaabanth IV
-Location of a renowned Orion terraformer's project. The Orion Space Navy is hoping to use this future colony as a staging point and listening post near Breen space.

This system is located between Izar and Sevury, further away from the Breen border compared to both planets.

Formation Design
This formation is designed to be held after the Vaadwaur were chased away as a defense against potential re-attack. It makes use of limited sensor range by forming a net between both planets. The net is designed to collapse upon itself if a ship is detected. Communications can also be relayed across this distance using this system. The planets are about 90 minutes travel from each other at the limited speed of Warp 1.95 in the story.

Now I will identify each vessel.

Upper Right Quadrant - Vaabanth III - Green Dot
OSN Jahlei - This is the largest Orion Space Navy vessel of the convoy. As a light cruiser, she has some of the strongest weaponry present. She is to guard the pre-warp people and stabilize this flank. She may be one of the least maneuverable ships.

Lower Right Quadrant - Vaabanth III - Green Dot
OSN Nyxien - Hugging the undersides of the planet is one of two destroyer sized vessels. It is quick and maneuverable, capable of stabilizing the orbit of Vaabanth III alongside the Orion's flagship. Note the difference in altitude, where both ships are vertically separated. Fight plans will draw the ships towards each other in an assault that should flank from above and below if able. This ship would have a hard time holding the planet if the Jahlei fell, and would likely have to retreat.

Center Map - Yellow/Gold Dot
USS Brawley - The California class has a central position between both planets. It acts as a relay and logistics vessel while also monitoring a great deal of space between the planets. It is ready to flex to support flanks on either planet. Her main responsibility is repairing damaged vessels, keeping the convoy in the fight. The Brawley is limited with firepower, with only 3 older phaser arrays and a few single fire torpedo launchers. A good crew make her shots worth more than their weight as they choose intelligent shots.

High Orbit - Vaabanth IV - Red Dot
IKS Votaragh - This is a Vor'cha class starship. It is cloaked high above the planet. This is the ace card, ready to attack from high orbit. A higher portion of vessels are protecting Vaabanth IV because allied assets are present. This is mainly a choice of the Orion Space Navy. Note the Brawley is more centrally located, without tactical preference. The Orions have more invested in the Terraformer's (Reesshard) work than the neighboring civilization. They have placed their largest cruiser there in defense of them as a compromise. The Klingons are cloaked, waiting to use their sensors to snipe essential locations before decloaking and sniping. If they have to travel to Vaabanth III, they'll rely on the Jahlei to hold off the Vaadwaur until they can respond. The Votaragh also carries a limited number of fighters.

Upper Left Quadrant - Vaabanth IV - Olive Dot
Reesshard's Yacht - This is the terraformer's armored craft. It has strong shields and ablative armor. It's role in battle has been to draw fire. It also has the role of guarding his work site, beneath it in synchronous orbit. Note it's below the IKS Votaragh to help draw Vaadwaur into the Klingon's grasp. It doesn't have very strong offensive capabilities, but its disruptors are still threatening.

Lower Left Quadrant - Vaabanth IV - Green Dot
OSN D'Vogh - This frigate sized vessel is the second largest vessel in the group. It is guarding the underside flank of the yacht and the Vor'cha. Just like what's happening on Vaabanth III, these ships will try to funnel the fight between these vertical angles, with the Klingons hopefully pouncing with a surprise finale. They've already sniped one Vaadwaur bridge in the course of the story. The D'Vogh will attempt what the Jahlei will try, by acting as the main Orion fighter stalling until the rest of the convoy responds. This is another of the convoy's least maneuverable vessels.

Upper Right Quadrant - Vaabanth IV - Green Dot
OSN Ttaren - Here is the second Orion destroyer-sized starship. It's guarding the outer flank of this planet. It stands ready to either act as the initial strike force if enemies approach from their vector. If not, it stands ready to wrap around the planet and attack from a different angle. The Ttaren will support less agile ships, packing strong firepower alongside them.

Convoy tactics will always include agility and mobility. Ships are instructed to plan aggressive attack maneuvering. Ships have attacked with figure 8 racetrack patterns that play to the maneuverability of these ships compared to the Vaadwaur in our story. Less agile ships will fight for a vertical altitude advantage and utilize tactics originating from old school dogfighting. These sorts of battles are about conserving energy and tossing the big ships into tight turns. Ships will always present moving targets and force the Vaadwaur to respond to attacks from different angles. There will never be one line of ships the Vaadwaur can key in on. Forces will target command and control infrastructure, including ship bridges, just as much as they target essential systems.

'Violence of action' is key to the plan, with ships urged to use maximum force when attacking.
