[LAB Phase 3]: Labyrinth Lost

Description

The Captain’s Log is a technique frequently used in Star Trek to set the scene or recap a series of events. Over the last month, your crew has been through a lot as Underspace apertures materialized throughout the galaxy and they dealt with the consequences. Now it’s time to retell the tale, documenting the proceedings of your ship across the Fleet Action in the voice of your ship’s Commanding Officer.

For this competition, your Captain’s Log may be written in first-person as a direct articulation of the log, or it may be written in the third-person if you find it more effective to intersperse their thoughts and emotions as they articulate it.

Criteria

  • Your Captain's Log must be between 500 and 1,000 words in length. It must be your independent creative work, and it must have been written during the duration of this competition.
  • Your Captain's Log must cover events in a mission that occurred on your command during the Labyrinth Fleet Action. Fleet-wide sandboxes and role-playing games are not eligible for this competition.
  • Your submission should be the Captain's Log itself, written in either the first or third person. Your submission should also include a link to the mission to which it relates. Your Captain's Log may be incorporated into a story posted to your command, but extra material from such a story should not be included in your submission.
  • Your submission will be evaluated based on (1) clarity of storytelling related to the command's story, (2) depth of character development for the narrator, and (3) writing quality and style.

Captains Log.

Stardate: 24010614.

The day started like any old day performing a resupply run to a local planet. Out of nowhere we were ordered to check out some strange readings that were appearing all over the galaxy.

The ship took one hell of a battering for the old ship that she is. Being pulled into that underspace like she was and bounced about like she did she held up very well.

The crew worked well under the extreme conditions. There are a few that I’m going to be putting up for promotion for extreme work and dedication to getting us all home.

The fellow crew members are who I’m putting up for promotion

Ensign Pemberton - She is my helmsman her extreme thinking and dedication to Starfleet and the history of the USS Voyager if she was not such a history buff we would have never known about what took us to the Gamma Quadrant.

Lt Commander Sharpe - for her quick actions when it come to getting us home, taking things with her gut and having addition torpedos made.

Lt Jr grade Tior - for coming up with plan to get us home that Lt commander Sharpe l. He’s getting the promotion for the excellent work he done getting us home.

Lt Jones Hill - for taking charge of the situation in rescuing the Klingons romulans and humans from the planet.

Apart from Lt Jr Tior and Ensign Pemberton who are going to be getting a promotion for their quick actions and dedication to the job.

I have attached to my log all the details from the interviews I performed with the Klingons Romulans and the Humans that we rescued from the planet we found them on. I felt sorry for the human survivors they were there the longest and survived extremely well considering there was not much on the planet. As I have detailed in my report I'm surprised anyone could survive on that planet with it being stuck between two solar systems and even more between two suns from what we worked out every 7 years.

The genius work that the young Lt jr grade Tior came up with getting us home was in my eyes extremely inventive and he will be a promising Chief engineer one day. Working out that using the deflector dish to send out a beam and then a second set of pulses to back up the first one was just a genius at work but to top it all up working out that would not be enough to penetrate the walls of the underspace and he would need to use some additional firepower in the form of torpedoes to give that last punch in the wall was just fantastic. But what also got me was that Lt Commander Sharpe also demised that what he was doing might not be enough as she had recently looked up everything the crew of Voyager had on the underspace corridors and concluded it might take more than he had already accounted for.

The Gilroy has performed perfectly and with taking a beating for travelling both ways through under space. And I will be sad to say goodbye to her when I move up to my new command and take my crew with me as the ship will be going in for repairs and ready for the next starting captain.

Computer attach all files from my files marked Conference Klingon, Conference Romulan and Conference Human along with my note called final Conference notes to this file and end log.

Captain’s log…

It’s hard to believe that it has been over two weeks since we returned to Federation space from what we now know as Underspace. The Calistoga is once again headed for Deep Space Seventeen as originally planned a few weeks ago. While I cannot speak entirely for my crew, I for one, am looking forward to settling down for a bit in our new home port before heading out on our next assigned mission.

I’ve reflected a lot on our particular encounter with Underspace and the mystery and intrigue behind the non-corporeal life forms we encountered. The exact location of which we will never know at this point. We were quite unprepared to be thrust into Underspace through a new and formed aperture, in fact, we were lucky to have not been torn apart by the gravitation forces we encountered. Calistoga, at that point, was in no shape to be put in such a situation, and it is a credit to her crew for making it through that situation in one piece.

We all were faced with our own mortality in those hours leading up to the help we received but despite that, I believe everyone acted with determination, professionalism and did their best to problem solve with the little resources we had at the time. Some impressive flying and coordination amongst various divisions saw us take safe haven in orbit of that rogue planet which was an unknown home to our saviours at that point.

I’m not afraid to admit it was sheer luck that we encountered lifeforms with such power that did decide to take pity on us and our situation. They could have just as easily throw us into the void of that black hole. Their help did come at a cost though, as many of us have been struggling to process a missing week and a half of our lives. It comes up in conversation a lot these days and it’s almost as if we are all missing a piece of ourselves. It’s hard to describe beyond that. I’ve requested some extra counselling support for our arrival at Deep Space Seventeen for those who want to take advantage of it. I’ll be encouraging everyone to participate.

The Klingons we encountered briefly in the Underspace did lead us to an aperture we were able to escape out of. We landed in Klingon territory near the Federation border, not too far from Providence Fleet Yards. We headed there with haste to further resupply and report in and thankfully did not encounter any hostility from the Klingons, who appeared distracted with their own intentions for Underspace.

Coming back to Federation space, it almost feels as if the entire alpha and beta quadrants have changed. Many other ships have had remarkable experiences and encounters in Underspace and I think we are on the edge of another golden age of exploration for Starfleet. For myself and the crew of the Calistoga, there is no evidence of our experiences other than what we can remember. This entire situation did bring us closer together as a crew though, as any near death experience would. We may not have contributed to science or advancements in discoveries like some of our colleagues out there but… We are alive and grateful to continue to be of service.

I’m still left wondering though… What happened to us during that week and a half….

Captain’s Log Supplemental – Stardate 240110.05

“After the rough journey through the Underspace from the Alpha quadrant leading the Galileo into the Delta quadrant we finally have enough data gathered from our astrometrics lab to lead the Galileo back home. The initial mission of supporting another starship with logistical and diplomatic dealings turned sour when the Galileo arrived at the rendezvous point with the starship not in sight.

With the crew and I feeling confused, I immediately ordered the chief science officer to go to the astrometrics lab to find any traces or clues where the starship might have gone. Everything leaves a trail after all but before the eyes of the crew, apertures start forming in quantity and before anyone could react the Galileo was pulled into the aperture which led into the Underspace in the Delta quadrant.

The rough ride through the Underspace aperture has left the Galileo stranded with several major systems offline and not functioning with the worst possible system being offline, that is the warp core. The chief engineer immediately had her team working to contain and to fix it. The medical department also received a lot of patients from the rough journey with myself needing to be checked out as I had a minor injury but was deemed to be fit for duty.

The Galileo and its crew approximately stayed in the delta quadrant for ten days until the stardate I am recording this supplemental log. The engineering department immediately got to work fixing the warp core while the science department started charting the surrounding regions of space that were unknown to us. We have been passed by several alien starships but we remain undetected with the excellent maneuvering and positioning of Ensign Lopez that gave the Galileo a natural camouflage.

Galileo has encountered some very interesting spatial phenomenons such as the “Void” which was a place in space where nothing exists, not a single speck of space dust or asteroids. We have also traveled far and wide to map portions of the delta isles which haven’t been charted before. All the information has been uploaded into the database with Galileo’s chief science officers opinion and research.

Speaking of science, Lieutenant Graves has finally found new evidence and information about the spatial occurrences in the delta quadrant which she has identified and documented in her research. Her reports will be submitted to the science committee board as well as our ship’s navigational studies and data.

So far, we have not encountered any hostels in our area of navigation and we remain hopeful that we do not encounter any. However, during our journey we have encountered several known species which needed our assistance in fixing their starships which we of course happily obliged and helped.

The tactical department has been working closely with the science department also in modifying our lab to be better suited to scan for longer ranges, detecting any warp capable vessel before it could be intercepted. We have made a lot of improvements and modifications to Galileo’s systems using my experience and the senior staff members experience in installing these new systems while carrying out routine maintenance work.

The Chief Petty Officers aboard the Galileo have exceptionally been helpful in teaching the green ensigns on how to effectively and efficiently manage and fix our systems especially in engineering…”

Mission: https://bravofleet.com/mission/122470

CAPTAIN’S LOG, Stardate 240105.06: What was intended to be the start of our inaugural mission to the Gamma Quadrant has taken a startling turn. Our investigation of a curious distress signal marked the beginning of a series of unfortunate and peculiar events. Upon tracing the signal, we discovered a fragment of a Romulan Warbird adrift in space. The real mystery began when our investigation catapulted us through a phenomenon dubbed 'Underspace' to the Delta Quadrant, fifty-four thousand lightyears from our previous position. Although stating that this is as far from our initial destination as imaginable would be an understatement, it still presents us with an unexpected opportunity to pursue our main mandate and explore uncharted territories.

Shortly after our arrival in the Delta Quadrant, we encountered a Romulan Free State vessel, the Vihroi. Initially, our contact was peaceful, but we were soon viciously attacked by a Hirogen hunting party that had previously marked the Vihroi and its crew as prey. The Hirogen, notorious for their relentless pursuit, posed a significant threat. Fortunately, both the Vihroi and our ship managed to evade their assault. Following the attack, I held a lengthy meeting with the Vihroi's commander, Temar, to discuss our predicament and potential strategies. Our collaboration proved fruitful, fostering a tentative alliance.

Commander Temar revealed that the Vihroi, along with two other vessels, had been engaged in mapping the so-called 'Underspace,' a bold and dangerous endeavor. The first ship, a D'deridex-class named llhrei'sian, was destroyed during its journey through Underspace. According to Temar, the ship suffered a sudden critical failure, causing it to be ripped into several pieces. From the details provided, it is clear that the distress signal we initially detected originated from the llhrei'sian, and the mysterious fragment we found belonged to it.

The destruction of the llhrei'sian had severe implications for the Romulan task force. The llhrei'sian was carrying a unique navigational device, named the 'Cipaere,' capable of predicting the locations of Underspace apertures. Its loss meant that the Vihroi and its sister ship, the RFS Seiyya, faced the significant challenge of being stranded in the Delta Quadrant. It was not long before they had their first of many encounters with the Hirogen. Sadly, after barely surviving a couple of skirmishes, the third attack proved fatal for the Seiyya. Boarded by the Hirogen, the crew had no choice but to self-destruct. Fortunately, Commander Temar managed to save a large portion of its crew, though this presented new problems, primarily dwindling rations. As a gesture of goodwill, we replenished their supplies, as we were well-stocked for our original mission.

The Tal Shiar Navy welcomed our gesture warmly, which led Commander Temar to disclose their attempts to replicate the Cipaere, although they have not yet succeeded. Recognizing the device as our potential means to return home, I have dispatched a team led by Lieutenant Commander Selene Arden, who has fortunately recovered from a recent incident, and Lieutenant Jansen to assist wherever they can. I am acutely aware that sending two senior staff members off the ship during such perilous times poses a significant risk and contravenes regulations. However, given our current circumstances, I believe this Romulan navigation device is our only chance to return home—or at least to find a way out of the Hirogen’s reach.

Our situation remains precarious, but our alliance with the Romulan Free State vessel offers a glimmer of hope. However, my past dealings with the Tal Shiar have taught me to remain vigilant. I have ordered Lieutenant Drevan to constantly monitor all activity on the Vihroi and especially our crew in their care, as a safety precaution. For now, we have set a course for the edge of Hirogen space, hoping to either cross the border or find an aperture before they catch up. If there’s one thing I am certain of, it’s that this crew’s expertise and resourcefulness will be key to navigating this unexpected journey with caution and determination, striving to find a way back to familiar space.

“Captain’s log, USS Helios, Stardate 78790. I am lucky to be able to record this entry, Helios was almost lost to us and it was only through the dedicated work of our crew that she found her way home to the Alpha quadrant. In the interests of clarity, I will be including extracts from the ship’s First Officer, Commander Biban Th’erhilnon as the officer in command during this period.” Tanek took a bite of a crunchy cookie, allowing the crumbs to fall on his uniformed chest. “10 days ago the ship and crew were deployed to the Badlands to act as a technical platform for a new sensor system being developed by the Corps of Engineers, during these experiments a spatial anomaly was encountered, a portal that we now know led to the Underspace network.” Tanek motioned with his hand to Bib, indicating he should continue as the Captain lifted another couple of cookies from the jar and looked on.

“The transit was…” Bib paused, looking out through the ready room’s windows to the stars that slid by, slower than normal due to Helios’ heavily damaged warp drive. “… rough. Whilst we didn’t suffer casualties the ship was heavily damaged and several systems disabled including main sensors and the matter-antimatter power systems. It was at this time Commander Helena Tyll was recorded as MIA, her Valkyrie being separated from the ship during transit. Computer pause.” Bib turned back to Tanek. “Do you really need me to do this sir? I’ll do it all at DS47 when we debrief.”

Tanek brushed the cookie crumbs from the corner of his mouth. “Record it for later Bib. By the time we get to DS47 your thoughts may have changed. Your heart may have hardened. Record it now whilst it’s still raw.” Tanek smiled paternally, “Computer resume.”

Bib sighed, and picking a cookie from the pot, leaned back into his chair. “We elected to launch the Heliades squadron alongside several runabouts to provide remote sensor feeds, the main array forced offline due to the polarising effect of the portal. What we saw was jaw-dropping, a debris field the size of a small starbase, a conservative estimate of at least a hundred different vessels from over 20 different species, some of which were not known to the Federation. All of them appeared to have suffered through the transit, but Helios remained in one piece and after identifying a safe harbour from the ongoing EM radiation bombardment from a nearby star, we limped through the system on impulse power.” Bib’s mouth went dry. “By the time we arrived in the safety of the tidally locked planet’s shadow, the Heliades squadron and Commander Anyok had identified wreckage belonging to Helena Tyll’s vessel and she was declared KIA. It was also at this time that Ensign How identified our location on the edge of the Beta quadrant, on the distant trailing edge of the galaxy. It became clear that return via warp was not an option and I instructed the science teams to find a way to reopen the portal.”

A comfortable silence wedged itself as they silently munched, reflecting on the Commander’s story. Tanek broke the silence first “The Kazon?”

“Whilst in orbit of the marshy planet the crew had begun to call Helike, after a drowned city on Earth, we viewed several torpedoes, launched from a wrecked Devore vessel, exploding in low atmosphere. It was my choice to dispatch Anyok and Theta Squad to stop the weapons fire and secure the ship from possibly explosive consequences. Whilst on the planet they found a village of Kazon who informed us they had been lost there after travelling through the portal, they also informed us the wrecks we found we the remnants of others who hadn’t been so lucky.” Bib’s skin turned dark blue as he became flustered with anger, he continued to beat himself up that he had been so blind to the Kazon’s deceit.

“But that wasn’t the truth was it?”

“No. We attempted to return through the portal with haste after discovering a large amount of tetryon interference was destabilising the Underspace access.” Bib’s visage was overcast as he remembered what had come next. “The Kazon raiders attacked us as we attempted to undertake detailed scans with our limited sensor systems to calculate the appropriate warp field. After consultation, I opted to remain in a fixed position to improve our chances of identifying the field frequency. It was my choice and what followed was my responsibility.” Tanek nodded for him to continue, this was a struggle every prospective captain had to go through. “We took heavy damage and casualties during the combat but discovered Commander Tyll to be alive aboard the lead raider. It was through her heroic efforts that we gained access to the Kazon sensor data and completed our research into the required field frequencies.”

Another silence hovered between the two, tears edging at Bib’s eyes, saying what they both knew to be true was almost too hard. “With the data, we re-opened the portal long enough to pass through and return to the Underspace network. Lieutenant Mitchell was able to retrace our route via the plasma remnants drawn in from the Badlands during our outward transit and we returned to the Alpha quadrant to find Captain Tanek and the Starfleet search ship.”

“With the help of the Rattigan, Helios has been secured and we are en route to DS47.” Tanek lifted a pair of glasses from a discreet shelf beneath his desk and poured a tipple of blue liquid into each before pushing one towards the Andorian across the table. “Unfortunately-”

“-Unfortunately…” Bib interrupted, Tanek gave the man the floor with a nod“ Commander Tyll did not make the return transit, her ship was heavily damaged and she was destroyed by the gravimetric forces of Underspace.”

“We commend Helena to the stars she loved. Fair winds and following seas.” the two men lifted their glasses in salute. “End Log.”

“Captain’s log, supplemental,” she began.

“The situation on Eos Station has escalated beyond our initial assessments. We started the month neck-deep in a series of system upgrades, a task that seemed straightforward but quickly became overshadowed by larger events. The murder of Ambassador T’Vel was certainly not a high point for the station. It sparked diplomatic tensions and internal investigations that diverted our focus from key areas. I wish I could say that the murder was solved, but diplomatic ties seem more important than the pursuit of truth. At least, that’s according to the Federation. It’s a Romulan matter, the end.

Without warning, these spatial anomalies appeared out of nowhere in our sector. Their arrival was as sudden as it was violent. One moment, we coordinated routine crew transfers, and the next, ships began vanishing and reappearing through these apertures. Romulan warbirds, Klingon battlecruisers, and numerous civilian vessels greeted us. The once manageable traffic around Eos Station turned absolutely chaotic.

The real blow came when several of our own crew members from the shuttlecraft Tyson were sucked into one of those portals. The sense of helplessness was overwhelming; there was very little we could do. Despite our enhanced security protocols, increased patrols, and strict lockdowns of sensitive areas, we could only do so much. Chaos, it seems, can undermine even the best-laid plans.

Our already strained resources were stretched even thinner when Captain Korta of the Klingon Empire appeared unexpectedly aboard the IKS Vo’ta. The Klingons’ arrival was anything but diplomatic. Korta’s frustration was evident. Klingons, it turns out, are not fond of being transported across the galaxy without warning. But there was something more to Korta. He seemed more like a petulant child than a warrior.

For me personally, the highlight of the week was Peter’s arrival. He assisted in the talks while complicating personal matters further. I’m his wife, and I was not informed of his travels, which raised numerous questions. Peter’s secretive nature is starting to erode the trust we’ve built. His connections to both Commander Harris and Ambassador Rempeck have caused me to question many things. The revelation that Peter is more than just an analyst has made me question his true intentions. A relationship can’t be built on lies.

Meanwhile, the portals have begun emitting unusual energy readings, leading to minor but persistent system malfunctions. The crew’s unease has been steadily growing. Dr. Rodriguez is working around the clock to mitigate the effects of these disturbances, but her exhaustion is increasingly evident. Commander Harris has taken on the critical task of stabilizing our engineering system; a role that will keep him in Engineering for the next twenty-four hours at least. Captain Bates, Gab, and Dr. Turner are focusing their efforts on Cargo Bay 3, where the portal’s influence seems strongest. Their mission: find a way to shut it down.

Our immediate objective is clear: restore order. We need to reroute the displaced ships back through the portal and reestablish an appearance of normalcy on Eos Station. The task is unnerving, but failure is not an option. The stability of Eos Station depends on what happens next.

End log.”

Denouement
USS Savannah / En-Route to Starbase 72 / Captain’s Ready Room / Deck 1
Stardate: 2401.7.20 / 09:12hrs (Shipboard Time)

“The end is in the beginning and yet you go on.”

Samuel Beckett, Endgame (1957)

“Captains Log. Stardate: 2401.7.20”

“In the end, it is difficult not to rail against the futility of recent events. Of paradise lost. Of potential Squandered. What of the costly lives spent? Are they now squandered? Was their sacrifice ultimately in vain?”

“These questions haunt me as the USS Savannah makes her way back to Starbase 72, its own future uncertain. Will the ‘old-girl’ be returned to mothballs (or worse yet – decommissioned and broken-down?)? Will this young crew, my first (and in my personal opinion – the finest) command – also be my last? An ignominious end for the bravery they have demonstrated as they have been forged in the crucible of the Labyrinth. These questions, I do not know. My hopes are to retain command of the Savannah – but I am keenly aware that this may always have been just a ‘brevet ‘command opportunity at best.”

“What will continue to haunt my further passage is the pervading question of whether the decisions that I made, whilst in command, were the right decisions and whether those decisions have done more good, than harm in the Galaxy?”

“Chief and foremost of those is my decision to rescue the True Way terrorist, Gul Yomat Ghallir, from his fate – whilst marooned together in the realm of Underspace. With the benefit of what I now know, with the tumultuous events that my mercy gave birth to and its Impact on the Cardassian Union in particular – would I elect to walk the same path of honor – if given the chance to do so again? It is a difficult question and one where the right answer is not readily apparent.”

“Despite his incarceration by the Obsidian Order, to which he embraced far too readily for my liking, Gul Yomat Ghallir had already set the wheels in motion for his nefarious and Machiavellian plan to restore the Cardassian Union to its former heyday of aggressive territorial expansion.”

“In truth, there was no way of knowing that, whilst the USS Savannah sought to heal the wounds inflicted upon us by the True Way vessel “Verran” – once we had uncovered Ghallir’s plot to falsely – implicate the New Marquis’ in a series of piratical attacks on civilian shipping – that the True Way commander had made contact with a disparate faction of the Kazon Collective, in the Delta Quadrant, and struck a ‘Faustian’ – bargain therein.”

“It is perhaps telling of both Gul Ghallir and of myself that, faced with an opportunity as unprecedented as Underspace – with the Labyrinth itself both a neutral arbiter and conduit to a new future of science and discovery that could have ushered in a new period of peace and prosperity across the Quadrants; that in the Labyrinth I saw only danger and threat and Gul Yomat Ghallir saw in it the potential to foment conflict and disseminate political division.”

“If Underspace is a looking – glass into our souls, what do we see when we look inside and do we find ourselves lacking?”

“For my part, I am proud and resolute in the knowledge that I did all that I could to bring my ship and people home intact, although the deaths that balance that debt will forever haunt me, the Cardassian pilots that were lost in our ‘rescue’ of the SS Devore, no more or less than that of Special Services Crewman Aldus Coe – murdered – his only crime to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, when a concerted campaign by the New Marquis to destroy this ship was being waged beneath our very noses.”

“Of my crew, I can report that my former Chief Engineer Carlito Herrera appears to be responding well, aboard Starbase 72, to the Nanomedical procedures being pioneered by my former USS Sacramento shipmate, Dr Abaywe Eboneke. I was pleased to see that Carlito received a promotion to full – lieutenant. It’s incongruous to have a 52-year-old Lt (JG).”

“The efforts of my Security Chief Myron Hayes & Chief Petty Officer Manningly in apprehending the duplicitous Ferengi Captain N’vok and commandeering the SS Devore with it’s illegal cargo of Cardassian Industrial-replicators bound for the Kazon – has provided vital evidence and a witness to the collusion of Gul Ghallir with sympathizers to the cause of the True Way within the High Command and done some damage, at least in part, to the True Way plan to destabilize the Detapa Council.”

“The advent of the arrival of Ensigns’ Ithariar Sh’eshikrar & Sabreen el-Hannan at Terminus Station aboard a commandeered Kazon Raider – complete with their entire crew in custody – is a tale that bears telling in full at the O -Bar (the drinks will be on me), but suffice it to say that those prisoners only serve to further confirm the existence of the plot against the council and once given evidence – they will be eventually returned to the Delta Quadrant.”

“I would like to say that those actions thwarted the plans of Gul Yomat Ghallir in their entirety, but sadly this is not the case. Life is seldom that symmetrical. As Lieutenant T’Vran correctly hypothesized, Ghallir’s intent was to decimate the Obsidian Order by unleashing the Kazon on the Cardassian Union – hoping to undermine support for the Detapa Council and strengthen the position of the Militaristic High Command.”

“But the net – effects is that, although the Kazon were destroyed & the Detapa Council has suffered but survived through those losses and is now more reliant upon the Federation for aid than ever, in the aftermath and its position thus weakened at home.

“Now is a time for diplomacy. For Taskforce 72. The bridge between quadrants has been broken by the Cardassian’s to secure their selfish hegemony, but we must now somehow seek a new path together – one towards peace.”

“End Log.”
