Summary

Lieutenant Kaedan Wyke is a strategic operations officer on Starbase Bravo. After years as an intelligence operative, an injury sustained during Frontier Day has seen him move to a position in analysis and management for the foreseeable future. Talented enough to excel, arrogant and impatient enough to think the role is beneath him, Wyke is a sharp officer but considered a poor team player if he thinks he’s in a situation where the pressure is off – such as riding a desk at Starbase Bravo.

Appearance

Lieutenant Wyke has a rugged and striking appearance. Despite his average height, he stands out for his well-defined jawline, the deep and expressive black eyes that belie his Betazoid heritage, and his tousled, dark brown hair. An athletic build and brooding demeanour both contribute to his physical presence, while the low, cultured drawl of his voice lends a cultivated sharpness to his verbal jabs.

History

Born to an influential Betazoid House, Kaedan Wyke should have been raised in comfort and privilege. The Dominion War and the Jem’Hadar occupation of Betazed put an end to that, with ten-year-old Kaedan forced to watch his parents’ public execution for their resistance. Although he was taken into the care of his large family, the experience and trauma set him for life on a path of cynicism and caution.

Given the best education after the war, Wyke applied for and was accepted at Starfleet Academy, looking to train as a security officer. Halfway through his time there came the Attack on Mars, for which even cadets were scrambled to take part in the emergency response. Wyke’s first time serving in uniform in earnest came during one of the greatest disasters in Federation history and prepared him perfectly for Starfleet’s ensuing operational withdrawal and cultural paranoia.

For some years after graduating, Wyke served as a security officer on a border cutter. Here, he demonstrated considerable initiative in proposing strategic solutions to local problems, gathering intelligence on pirate groups and using this to cut them off logistically or destroy their operational hubs. This experience, and the reputation he earned for this work, made him a strong candidate when he requested a transfer to Starfleet Intelligence.

He worked first as an analyst out of Starbase 10, monitoring the border during the chaotic changes in the former Romulan Star Empire. It did not take long before he moved on to participating in and eventually leading operations in the volatile region, working to, as he saw it, protect the Federation’s interests.

Wyke was one of the officers resistant to the cultural change after 2399, which saw him moved to the Ferengi and Breen borders. He participated in key intelligence-gathering operations during the Lost Fleet’s invasion in 2401, which he saw as further validation of his worldview. He was highly critical of Command’s inaction during the crisis, and was repaid for this criticism by being sent to the former Cardassian DMZ to participate in operations against the True Way.

On Frontier Day, Wyke was on an operation just over the border in Cardassian territory when his young teammates spontaneously assimilated. Needing to both prevent the threat and avoid the massive diplomatic fallout if the worst happened, he was forced to deal with his team himself and was heavily wounded in the process. Stranded for some time behind the border before he was recovered, the lack of immediate medical care left its mark as much as the rest of the ordeal.

Wyke’s left leg was amputated to be replaced with a prosthetic. Between the period of physical recovery and the need for psychological care after his experience – care which Wyke was, and remains, stubbornly resistant to – he was transferred out of front-line duty to recuperate. In the aftermath of the Changeling infiltration and post-2399 cultural transition, Starfleet Command is also interested in moving officers like him away from a paranoid fortress mentality and bringing them into the fold with the organisation’s mandate of exploration and diplomacy.

As such, Lieutenant Wyke has been assigned as a strategic operations officer at Starbase Bravo, here to act as an analyst, briefing officer, and advisor on operations related to the station’s sector-wide responsibilities. On the one hand, he clearly thinks this is beneath him and is eager to return to his previous duties, however much Command would like to see him change his path. But while here, Wyke is intent on proving himself, which means not only doing a good job – it means, as an intelligence officer, keeping abreast of everything that goes on aboard Starbase Bravo, and having the network to do so.
