Summary

Joshua James Dutton was born on Earth in May of 2370 to Helen and Jonathan Dutton. He is an only child, but has numerous cousins that share the duties of their chosen life in the great outdoors. His family are what are known as Range Wardens and also maintain a working cattle ranch. They work as conservationists to maintain the local flora and fauna of the area.

Josh grew up outdoors. His earliest chores on the ranch were seeing to the animals, riding the pastures on horse back and helping with the occasional cattle drive. It was during one of these drives that Josh was pressed into service to help deliver a calf to a cow that was having a particularly hard time with its delivery. This was his first exposure to helping a living thing in a life or death situation. He became fascinated with medicine. Not just animal or human, but all kinds. In short, he was hooked.

History

In 2386, at the age of sixteen, Josh decided that he would enter Starfleet Academy and pursue a career. He fast tracked into the medical program and majored in the field. His instructors were impressed by the empathy he showed for all living creatures and his willingness to learn and study new techniques and procedures as they related to the surgical field. Graduating in the top five percent of his class, Josh was immediately accepted into the Starfleet Medical Academy.

Throughout Medical School, Josh excelled in his classes. Among his chief interests however, which were picked up on by his instructors, was his fascination with alien species. Horta, Tholian or Hermat, Josh was drawn to the more exotic areas of his chosen field and this was not lost on his instructors. They began preparing him for the most prestigious medical program in Josh’s career: Johns Hopkins Xeno-Biology Program located in Baltimore, Maryland. He graduated at top of the class.

In 2396, Dutton was assigned as a Medical Officer aboard the USS Saratoga. He carried out his duties in a most competent manner and received several citations for his performance aboard the ship. But, something was missing. It was not that he craved excitement, he just felt that he was not living up to his potential.

—THE FOLLOWING IS CLASSIFIED—

To that end, Josh applied for and was accepted onto the USS Eldridge as an Assistant Chief Medical Officer in the Beta Quadrant. There, Josh would realize he was about to get his wish…in spades. While patrolling outside the Kzinti Hegemony, the Eldridge was attacked by unknown hostiles with weapons far more advanced than Starfleet’s. The ship was crippled by the attacker’s opening salvo and had the Kzinti not been in the area, the Eldridge would have been destroyed.

With over half the crew dead and the ship unable to reach a starbase under its own power, it was towed to Kzin, the Kzinti homeworld where the remains of the crew were treated by Dutton and Kzinti physicians as well. The attacker has not been identified or seen again since then. The entire matter has been classified by the Federation and Starfleet. An open investigation is, however, still pending.

Following the end of his posting to the Eldridge, Dutton was reassigned to the USS Aquarius as its new Chief Medical Officer.
