Thran th’Zar

Thran th’Zar, generally known simply as Thran, is a highly decorated Starfleet officer who currently commands the USS Leto.

His lengthy Starfleet career has placed him at the centre of many of the Federation’s most consequential conflicts. A former student of the Laikan Military Academy on Andoria, Thran first saw major combat during the Second Federation-Klingon War of 2372. He subsequently fought the Borg at the Battle of Sector 001, served throughout the Dominion War and participated in Starfleet’s response to the Pakled Conflict of 2380–2381.

For much of the mid-2380s, Thran supported efforts to relocate the Romulan people ahead of the impending supernova. Following the Attack on Mars in 2385, he took part in the desperate search for survivors. His later assignments included protecting trade routes between the Federation and the Cardassian Union from raiders and, in 2399, defending Federation worlds in the Archanis Sector from the Hunters of D’Ghor.

In 2400, Thran was involved in Operation: Sundered Wings, leading a relief convoy into former Star Empire Rator territory and successfully negotiating the accession of two Romulan colonies into the Romulan Republic.

A year later, he fought against the Dominion’s Lost Fleet in the Deneb Sector and participated in the Battle of Farpoint. Although absent from the Frontier Day massacre, Thran and his crew joined the subsequent relief operation in Earth’s orbit.

During the Vaadwaur Incursion of 2402, his ship helped engage the remaining Vaadwaur forces who had invaded Alpha Centauri. Thran’s extensive service record has earned him numerous decorations, commendations and campaign honours.

Thran takes his responsibilities extremely seriously, but refuses to allow the burdens of command to extinguish his sense of humour. He is frequently the joker among a gathering of senior officers, using quick wit, playful irreverence and carefully timed remarks to relieve tension. His humour occasionally surfaces at moments others might consider inappropriate, although those who know him understand that it is how he helps himself and his crew endure difficult circumstances.

Behind Thran’s easy charm is an experienced and exceptionally capable commander. Decades of conflict have made him decisive under pressure, fiercely protective of those under his command and unwilling to waste lives for the sake of pride or appearances. He is candid, emotionally expressive, and occasionally stubborn, particularly when he believes his crew’s safety is being compromised. Although he enjoys cultivating an informal atmosphere, he expects complete professionalism when a situation becomes serious.

Thran is the father of four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom followed him into Starfleet. His three bondmates also serve in Starfleet, including Commander Shantilas zh’Renn, the Leto’s chief security and tactical officer. Thran is immensely proud of his family, although he is determined that none of them should receive preferential treatment because of their relationship with him. On duty, Shantilas is his senior tactical adviser and a fellow officer first; in private, she is among the few people capable of challenging him directly and convincing him when he is wrong.
