Summary
A mustang who spent the Dominion War as an enlisted man before upgrading to a commissioned officer in the late 2370s, Steiner is old Starfleet and a staunchly defensive-minded man. Popular only amongst his fellow near-militant officers- and his longtime friend, Joel McCarran-, Steiner is brash, rough, highly opinionated, and about as personable as sandpaper across the face. He drives his crews hard and rarely has anything kind to say, leaving him deeply unpopular with anyone who’s served under him.
His worst flaws have only been highlighted since driving his only command as a full captain, USS Chikuma, into an old Dominion War minefield in mid-2402. Having barely survived his tribunal and been cut down a rank, Steiner feels slighted by Starfleet and has taken an incredibly dim view to both his new ship, Santa Fe, his new CO, the significantly younger Charlotte MacColgan, and his new crew, rallied under the stewardship of Song So-mi. A man who holds onto grudges tightly and doesn’t let go, Steiner often feels as though McCarran is his only friend in a galaxy set against him.
