Xelariin, or Xel, is a Selkies from the planet Pacifica. An aquatic world with many oceanic based species and a member of the Federation. Though fully aquatic, Xel joined Starfleet with a sense of duty to protect his Pod.

Description: The Selkies are fully aquatic, living underwater and able only to visit the surface for brief periods without the aid of a hydration suit or other breathing apparatus. As children and young adults, they’re amphibious, but as they age, they lose their lungs, become fully aquatic, and can only visit the surface when wearing a special suit. Xin therefore is never seen without his hydration suit.
Personality
Xelariin approaches the galaxy with an enduring sense of wonder. Growing up beneath the oceans of Pacifica, the worlds beyond the surface seemed almost unimaginable and even now he retains much of that curiosity that first drew him to Starfleet. He is naturally friendly, optimistic and eager to engage with those from other cultures.
Unlike many of his crewmates, Xel is constantly aware that he is living in an environment never intended for his species. Rather than allowing this to isolate him, he has developed a remarkable adaptability and resilience. He embraces life outside the water with enthusiasm, viewing every challenge as an opportunity to learn rather than a barrier to overcome. This attitude has made him an effective bridge between very different species and personalities.
The events around Frontier Day effected him deeply and he questioned whether he still belonged within starfleet. Those experiences left him more thoughtful than he was in his youth but they never diminished his belief in the Federation. Beneath his cheerful demeanour is a quietly determined individual who sees service not as a career but as a way to honour both his crew and the Pod he still considers home.
Hobbies and Interests
He is particularly fond of Tesh’kora, a traditional Arkenite water sport that he’s picked up from one of the Engineering team, Lt Hesh. It is a sport which combines endurance swimming, navigation and teamwork through complex underwater courses.
History
Early Life (2382-2392)
Xelariin was born on Pacifica in 2382. He spend the entirety of his childhood under the water and it was not until he came of age in his 8th year that he looked to what was happening above. What he discovered was not only what felt like an entire new world but the galaxy itself opened up to him. He decided then that he wanted to see it all. When the opportunity came for him to join starfleet he jumped at it and enlisted.
Starfleet Academy (2392-2393)
He arrived on Earth in 2379, enlisting in Starfleet at the age of 10 years old to begin his career above the water. Luckily for him, he was not the first fully aquatic species to join Starfleet with many others joining prior. While surprised, he quickly embraced both above the water and within in. Spending as much time outside the water in his hydration suit than he would in the water. He learnt quickly the ways of the non-aquatic species which grounded him well for the rest of his career.
USS Oberon (2393-2401)
Xelariin served as a crewman and PO aboard the Luna Class USS Oberon. During this time is solidified himself as a capable crewman within Operations, fulfilling a multitude of roles. Xelariin never felt at home on the Oberon following the events of Frontier Day. He was unsure of his future and whether he could continue within Starfleet following the losses of so many he considered his family.
USS Horizon (2401-Present)
One of his old crewmates persuaded him to stay within the Fleet and assist her efforts reaching out to species across the void of space. He still serves with her to this day, as a Yeoman for Captain Tahlari Vahl, bridging the gap between the fully aquatic species and the rest of the crew.
Followed Captain Vahl to the USS Horizon and continued his duties as her Yeoman. He contributed with professionalism and dedication throughout the displacement crisis of 2403, he adapted quickly to an unfamiliar and dangerous reality. Their actions helped support the Horizon’s primary mission, protect the crew, rescue the displaced and uphold Starfleet values under extraordinary circumstances.
