Summary
Liberated by the Borg Reclamation Project in 2398, Vanya underwent the long and painful journey from being Six of Eleven (Former Tertiary Monitor of Unimatrix 8) to rediscovering who Lieutenant Vanya Anouska Petrovna was again.
Captured and assimilated by the Borg in 2373 during the Battle of Sector 001, Ensign Petrov spent 25 years as a drone. Outwardly she appears to be the same 21 year old young woman taken in her prime, whereas chronologically she is 50 years old.
Haunted by the nightmare of her past, most of Vanya’s more dangerous implants have been deactivated, whilst the long process to purge her body on Borg Nanites continues. What functionality she has retained are of distinct advantage when it comes to interfacing with the USS Kirks onboard engineering – systems.
Appearance
Six of Eleven appears to be a 21 year old East – Slavic woman, with blonde hair and grey eyes.
Standing 5ft 7ins tall and of slight build, the most evident outward sign of her enslavement by the Borg Collective is the prominent ocular implant where her left eye should be. Her left arm was removed by the Borg from the elbow down, so has been replaced with a human – realistic positronic prosthetic that gives her the same strength and range of tactile motion as a normal human.
Personality
Quiet and pensive, Six of Eleven is self – conscious of her appearance and sensitive to the natural aversion her fellow crewmates must feel to working with a former Borg Drone (though they hide it well). Six of Eleven struggles with regaining her sense of humanity and re-inhabiting the life and skin of Vanya Petrov.
A talented engineer before her assimilation, Six of Eleven’s Borg implants allow her to directly interface with the USS Kirk’s systems and she feels more of an affinity for the ship’s computer, than she does her fellow organic crewmates.
Life aboard a Shran-class Escort means living in close proximity with your shipmates, conversely after 25 years aboard a Borg – cube, this doesn’t phase Vanya at all.
History
Petrograd native Vanya Anouska Petrovna graduated Starfleet Academy in San Francisco in 2372 as a newly minted Junior Engineer aboard the Nebula-class Cruiser, USS Agincourt, full of hope and enthusiasm at the outset of a promising Starfleet career.
However, only 1 year later that promise was cut cruelly short when Vanya was one of many captured and assimilated into the Borg Collective during the Battle for Sector oo1.
She became Six of Eleven, Tertiary Monitor of Unimatrix 8, and spent the next 25 years in unknowing thralldom as a part of the Borg Collective. Liberated from the Collective in 2398, as an xB she began the slow and painful process of decommissioning of her major implants and gradual purging of the nanites from her body, slowly becoming human again and re-acquainting herself with what that meant.
She regained her commission in 2400, but struggled to find acceptance within Starfleet until Lieutenant Commander Lane Hanley (who had lost her own father during Wolf 359) reached out and defied expectation by offering Vanya a post as Chief Engineering Officer aboard the USS Kirk.
