Summary
Denid Redyn is a young Trill scientist specialized in Cochrane excitations of the crystalline structure. He is hopeful and idealistic, but somewhat distant.
Having a Vulcan grandmother, he inherits some limited telepathy and the strong emotions that are characteristic of the species. While he has never desired to get rid of his emotions, he regularly practices Vulcan meditation and reads Surak’s teachings.
As a Trill, his mixed heritage is disqualifying for the process of becoming a host. While this fact has been a source of consternation for Denid’s half-Vulcan father, Denid himself is at peace with this knowledge and has resolved to be as brilliant a scientist as he can in his only life.
Appearance
Denid is thin, pale, and sports the typical spots of a Trill. From his Vulcan heritage he inherits a slight pointiness of his ears, yet no curve of the eyebrow. His blood is however copper-based and green-colored.
His hair is brown and usually worn in an undercut; he sometimes has it colored to a lighter, almost reddish hue.
When not in service, he prefers to wear comfortable clothing: big thin shirts, short trousers.
Personality
Denid is usually composed, calm, and tries to shine tranquillity. Due to his familiarity with Vulcan meditation, he often invokes to logics and manages to remain calm under duress.
The downside is that often he comes off as a little distant: he often doesn’t know how to respond to the strong emotional displays of, for instance, Klingons, Andorians, or humans.
His outlook on life is idealistic and filled with optimism despite the numerous calamities that have afflicted the Federation in the more recent past.
Being part Vulcan, he can initiate mind melds, although they are extremely taxing for him and he relies on the help of the other mind. His telepathy can cause him problems, as receiving strong and unexpected telepathic messages can leave him disoriented and confused.
He experiences a weak, sporadic form of Pon-Farr.
History
Youth
Denid was born on the seaside of the seas of Trill in 2370.
His father, V’Seyanol, is the son of one of the first Vulcan ambassadors to Trill and of a Trill culture expert named Naris Xurie, and is one of the first Trill/Vulcan hybrids on record. He works as a philosopher at the Gorbartnax Jirrol University.
His mother, Jadzia Redyn, was a deep-sea botanist. During Denid’s youth she left several times to supervise maritime colonization processes on new Federation planets; she perished while in one such mission in the year 2395.
Denid’s childhood was uneventful and shielded: one of his first memories of the troubles of the galaxy is the celebration, when he was 5 years of age, of the truce between the Federation and the Dominion.
While his first love was music, at 12 years of age he decided that he would never be good at it and, to compensate from the disappointment, he took on writing harmonic equations. His second love were, therefore, mathematics and physics, which he took up first with gusto, and then with eagerness.
He always knew that he wouldn’t quite fit on Trill, its culture being so dominated by the unachievable dream of becoming a host. At age 15 he left to complete his studies on Vulcan, where he was hosted by his cousins, and then he enrolled in Starfleet Academy in 2391. It was the rise of the Sovereignity of Kahless that convinced him of the usefulness of Starfleet.
The Academy Years
At Starfleet Academy he was a dedicated student, curious and voracious, and strove to get to know as many people as he could. His focused mind caused him problems: he became often positively aggravated by the idea of submitting himself to a piloting course or to a shooting exercise, and had several disagreements with instructors of courses he wasn’t interested in.
During his Cadet Cruise on the USS Republic, he picked a sample of pyrochlore from an asteroid, discovered it has been hit and affected by talaron radiation, and spent the whole trip doing crystallography on that 2-cm long shard of rock.
On the USS Geranty
After the Academy, he was assigned to the USS Geranty, which was tasked with a geological reviews of the Jade Planets. However, the dire need of crew after Frontier Day led him to volunteer to be reassigned to a more active front, and he was eventually transferred to Starfleet Bravo.
Strengths and weaknesses
Denid is a talented mathematician, expert in Perim-Wang algebras, and a gifted solid state physicist specializing on Sloane mechanics. He is lousy with anything softer than biochemistry.
As a teammate, Denid is supportive and engaged, but struggles when taking leadership and is often independent to a fault. In emotionally conflicts, his first instinct is to retreat.
He has a foul aim but is surprisingly good in hand-to-hand combat, and has an impressive stamina for such a wiry physique.
His telepathic abilities are mediocre at best, and require enormous concentration and energy.
