Bravo Fleet
Summary
Recently graduated from Starfleet Academy’s four year program, Ensign Makarov was initially slated for a yearlong assignment onboard a starship for field studies before heading back to the Academy to complete his studies in quantum and astrophysics. Due to a clerical error, there wasn’t a spot for him on the chosen vessel and he continued his studies at Starfleet Academy until now, as he has been assigned to Starbase Bravo for his field studies.
Appearance
Tall and gangly with a mop of brown hair and dark brown eyes, Valeriy always seems on the verge of falling as his walk, indeed most movements, have an air of distracted awkwardness. He is very fair skinned with a gaze that is either uncomfortably intense or aimlessly vague.
Personality
Valeriy is a socially awkward, easily distracted man. He is constantly thinking about random problems and trivia. He of course, is able to pull it together as if he couldn’t he would never had even been accepted into Starfleet, let alone make it through the Academy. However he doesn’t think before he talks at times, not out of any malice but simply he expects others to know what he’s talking about even if he started somewhere in the middle.
Due to this and his overall lack of social skills, Valeriy finds it hard to make friends, though he is making conscious efforts to address these issues. Still, he is a kind and helpful man, when he isn’t engrossed with a problem or theory, and he managed to find a few good friends in the Academy who saw his worth, seeing him for the goodhearted, lovably annoying man he is.
History
Early Life (2377-2395)
Born into a family of technicians, with his father Boris being a systems programmer and his mother Anya being an aerospace engineer, Valeriy was pushed towards academics at an early age. While his parents could be outgoing to the point of boisterousness, Valeriy was a quiet, introverted child. This would be reinforced with Valeriy having several bad social interactions with fellow children from an early age. For a time his parents tried to force him into being more social, eventually they would give up as they saw it was only making Valeriy more miserable.
Valeriy was an extremely voracious reader and constantly had his nose in a book or PADD. It also became apparent from an early age that he had an extremely high level of intelligence. As he continued to excel in academics, he had a teacher, Mr. Derniev, push him towards using his unique mind and intelligence to start studying astrophysics. This led to quantum physics among other studies and Valeriy found the subject and it’s challenges fascinating.
As he grew older, he also began to improve his social skills somewhat, though he was always awkward, alternating between shyness and obliviousness. He even managed to make a few friends. It was one of these friends’ interest in Starfleet that got Valeriy to look into it himself. The opportunities to study physics further seemed abundant and Valeriy took the entrance exam in Moscow and managed to get through it, though it was the toughest challenge in his life. The challenge wasn’t academic, but social and mental. Still he succeeded and left for San Francisco in 2395.
Starfleet Academy (2395-2401)
Starfleet Academy was an overall good period for Valeriy. The structure and discipline helped him concentrate and the curriculum was suitably stimulating. He also made some very good and quite varied friends in his time there. He also had many opportunities to improve his social skills, which didn’t always go smoothly. He did get involved with several study groups and clubs pertaining to the field of physics and was generally well liked, if sometimes looked askance at for various social faux pas. He was a big help to many of his friends regarding courses involving the hard sciences
After his first four years, he was slated to do field studies on a starship for a year but an administrative error caused this to fall through. However, this wasn’t to detrimental as Valeriy simply continued his studies in advanced astrophysics and quantum physics at Starfleet Academy for a further two years. He has now been reassigned to Starbase Bravo for field studies.
