The impulse to join Starfleet then came from Luke’s grandparents, who had both been Starfleet officers. His mother was raised on several Starships and had a lot of interesting stories about what it was like to be on Starfleet vessels as a kid. It was on Christmas Eve in his last high school year, that his grandparents told him the story of their first mission together and what it meant to them to be part of the Starfleet family. So, after high school – while still being a kid to a substantial degree – Luke decided that he wanted to embark on that adventure, much to the liking of his parents and grandparents. During his four years at the Academy, he recurrently came home to his family, sharing a strong bond with all of them. He managed to excel in engineering classes while taking on Science as his minor. He made a lot of friends during those years, not least because he spent a lot of time at the local bars. Unti his final Academy year, Luke never had to deal with doubt, grief or pain in his life. During this year, his sister succumbed to a rare disease that could not be treated. This set Luke’s world on fire and gave him a deep sense of insecurity. During the coming year, he had to fight through the pain and try to stay on his track while challenging a lot of his own decisions and his ability to cope with challenges.
