Summary

A starfleet lifer, an engineering officer developed into a leader, seasoned enough to know his time at the cutting end he is up, content to ply the interior keeping an eye one the up and coming leaders, the fresh eager younger generation, and applying his considerable experience to keeping his ship, his task force, starfleet, and the Federation.

Appearance

A deep shade of blue skin coloring, with gold coloured eyes, and a slight edge to his chin, that combined with a stocky build, give him an look of purpose even when he’s relaxed. Long sleeves are a go to of his, due to arms being covered in minor scars from heat and electrical burns from early repair assignments. Dress code-wise, on duty he has high standards and will try to show up for duty shifts with a near immaculate uniform, but accepts the because of the nature of his work it wont be in the same state by the end. Off duty his is more relaxed but the neat, clean, habits spill through.

Personality

+A hands-on learner and teacher. The way Vilgi prefers to operate and his most effect way of taking in and imparting information and skills, have led to an on-the-job approach to almost everything. An approach that is in fact valued by Department heads, as it involves personnel spending more time doing things and so increases productivity and efficiency with in departments.

+ A People person. Vilgi is happiest when he’s around people and interacting with them. He tend to a quite open person is always looking to start and develop new relationships both personally and professionally and has a knack for remembering details about people. This has been a great help professionally quite early on in his career he was called upon when issues of an inter-departmental nature cropped up, his knack for details about people translated to details of departments needs. An ability to connect these to mission priorites making him a very capable commander and leader.

– Self doubt. Although not entierly ready to admit this to himself, Vilgi carries an level of self doubt, still ready and able to make command decisions, recent catastophic events have taken there toll. His decision to take a steping stone command at this stage in his career is telling one, and sooner or later the seasoned commander will have to confront these inner troubles.

History

Life on a Colony – business focused family – yet supportive of Fed

Born on a colony world, to a family who had long and deep ties in the history of said colony. The family being among the founding families. A typically large family, Vilgi had three direct siblings with another five half siblings. The family business was one of transportation, particularly one of light, fast couriers, for both persons and freight. The family were also firm believers in the value of the federation, that it was a force for good and its principals were worth living, sacrificing, even dying for. A very distinct early memory for Vilgi was the family business suspending commercial operations and turning control over to Starfleet, with a pair of operations staff running the scheduling, during the border conflicts with the Cardassian Union.

This background, almost unshakeable belief in the mission of starfleet and the federation. Combined with a strong interest and aptitude for how things worked, how things were put together, how they were fixed, it is perhaps not surprising he elected to join Starfleet.

Early Career- Technical training, Leadership potental

Joining through the enlisted training program, Vilgi turned his love of how things worked into a vocation, proving a diligent and consistent crewman. He was assigned on board ship soon enough, enjoying the slight prestige of serving aboard a class lead ship, even if the class was an older one by this time. As this was war time the vessel served in a scouting role, for some of the major offensive toward the ;ater half of the war. It also provided security in the immediate aftermath, then relief efforts. During this period Vilgi became even more convinced of the need for Starfleet to be fully involved in supporting other species, even those who were formally hostile. ‘A person who can act should act’ became a guiding ethos at this time. His technical skills were also improved, with him completing a specialist course onboard ship, and a transfer to another in need of said specialism followed.

The next posting took him out on Starfleet’s core mission, to explore, with the vessel assigned to a number charting missions, with specific goals to give the larger explorers an indication of both where the points of interest could be found, what hazards needed to be avoided. Sometimes by first hand experience, the blackfoot becoming entangled in a nebulous cloud, and only some original thinking allowed them to escape, Vilgi was involved in containing the associated structural problems, initially without full knowledge of the circumstances, or contact with someone more senior, but proved effective at both working though the problem and managing and leading the crew in his section of this ship for a time.

Recommended as a potential officer, Vilgi transferred back to a Starbase for a period of training at an academy annex, achieving above average in assessment and actual testing, he was granted a commision as an engineering officer.

mid career – finding his leadership footing

Following another starship posting and becoming increasingly concerned about the unfolding situation in Romulun space. He opted for a transfer to directly assist  with the evacuation and relocation of the Romulan people, spending eighteen months at Vassti’s Central station, withdrawn following the Attack on Mars.

Spurred on to want to aid and to have a greater ability to do so, Vilgi took a significant decision to push into elected to take the bridge officer exam. Selected as an operations manager, he spent the next few years at the sharp end of decision making and away missions, designated the second officer to fill the gap following transfers, he quickly recongnised the value of the individual skills the staff brought to the decision making process, finding his voice during these years, becoming a key part of first in away missions, and beginning to lead follow up missions.

Put forward as an executive officer candidate after ten months, he was selected for the USS Edward Adams, a nova-class starship. The survey vessel was tasked with a specific research mission that often meant staying in one small area, often for three to four months at a time. It also meant frequent periods of supporting additional research groups, either transporting them to a scientific base and remaining in support, or having them onboard ship for the period of study. Both presented unique situations, striking a balance between research needs and ship needs proved a challenge, as did integrating and fostering a sense of cooperation between standing crew and visiting researchers. Vilgi’s prior experience lent him to seek out the general lab technician that had served longest, along with the chief science officer, leaning on both for pointers and support as needed, as it turned out the Commanding Officer lent on him when it came to crew mood and morale. His long standing habit of working alongside and collaborating with others, while providing clear direction and compass-like purpose set a good example in this regard. While returning from the seventh research assignment, Vilgi was both promoted to Commander and offered his own command.

Command, Catastrophe, Aftermath

The fact the offer was made much sooner than he expected, caused a little bit of doubt, and it took a number of deep conversations with his CO before accepting.

The Investigator an older starship and much of the next two years would be spent in support operations, mostly ensuring medical aid or engineering support was provided to priority locations, along with brief spells on patrol routes. The first few years in command had Vilgi establish himself as a flexible problem solver, particularly when it came to technical matters, he also proved more than willing to speak up when he felt it needed, particularly when it came to the selective distribution of aid and assistance and the dangers the apparent pecking order that was being used to make such decisions.

The next big change was a promotion in rank to Captain and a new ship, USS Cincinnati, still an older design but larger and more capable, ideal to begin a new chapter for the capable Bolian. Recent events and revolutions had prompted a change in attitudes and a change in policy, persons such as Vilgi were now well placed and willing to return to exploration. Tasked with a three year cataloguing mission of sector six six one, captain and crew willingly poked at every star, every asteroid, every planetary system. Finding at least three previously unidentified comets, observing the largest black hole in the sector, waking the line on the prime directive at least three times, and making one first contact.  Cincinnati was recalled in preparation for Fronter Day, making it as far as Starbase Nineteen, the crew intended to observe the celebrations, caught up in the ensuing mayhem. Vilgi and eight other older officers and enlisted crew made it to escape pods and managed to get off the ship, the Cincinnati took no further part in events thanks to Vilgi and a specialist managing to not only eject the warp core, but have it detonate close enough to cripple but not destroy the vessel.

In the aftermath, Vilgi struggled to come to terms with his own actions, all taken in either self defence or to prevent further harm being brought on others, with the Denver deemed unsalvageable and scrapped, Vilgi requested command in the federation interior. Granted the command of a California-Class, the seasoned officer is content to provide a stable training ground and mentorship for the officers and crew coming though, while grappling with his own demons and insecurities.
