The screen flickers to life showing Kirin Tarken sitting at the desk in her room aboard the USS Daradax in her full uniform (this is her command log after all). She looks at the screen and sighs before beginning.

Commanders Log Sublimental

“We are still en route to Starbase 23, another 36 hours until we arrive. The crew is apprehensive to say the lease. They, we, had all gotten ourselves into the mindset of explorers you could say, and I know we were looking forward to that mission in Sector Fero Psi.”

“This new mission is important and why star fleet exists but so far the details or exact orders are limited, to say the least. Once we arrive, I am sure Captain sh’Elas will lay it all out for us and we can then plan accordingly.”

—

Pausing she shakes her head slightly and lets out a long breath as she tilts her head back to the ceiling before continuing.

—

“Well, that is not exactly true, is it. For me anyways. It seems that once Star Fleet Intelligence, always SFI. After I briefed the crew, I received a coded transmission from my old CO, Commander Clements. I guess the brass thought a friendly face, well a known face, would be better than a random SFI handler.”

“Once we rendezvous with the Temeraire and taskforce I have been ordered to brief Captain sh’Elas on an additional component of the mission. I am to meet with an SFI informant within the underground of the system we are heading to as it is believed that they have information about the coup and plans that the new Romulan “government” may have for the Psi Velorum Sector though he couldn’t say what.”

“That means that Thanen will be getting command for a period of time as I will need to lose the Starfleet mantel yet again and pick up the Orion criminal one; I had really hoped I was done with that.”

“He will be ready. It will be several days before we arrive at our final destination, possibly longer as I suspect we will need to load up on materials and humanitarian supplies before we depart SB23. The crew has already started going over every system and sub-system to make sure they are up to spec. Not that we expect to find anything that needs repairing. The yard crew at SB Bravo did a great job getting the Daradax ready for what was meant to be a yearlong survey mission.”

“The crew is doing as well as expected. Both Belania and Kerry are fresh out of the academy, this will be the first big test for them, training and simulations can only take you so far when events start to move quickly; be it combat or not. Thanen and Ril have a couple of years in the fleet, though it was on SB Bravo they made it through the chaos of the century storm so I know they will be fine.”

“I just cannot shake this feeling that this will not be a simple humanitarian aid mission. The Romulans are going to push back, how could they not. The entire Fourth fleet has been mobilized and will be pushing into territory they believe to be their own.”

“We shall see what – all we can do is be prepared.”

“Computer end recording.”

Kirin leans forward to turn off her console before pausing; ‘Computer, start a private message for Captain Tarken, USS Stormfront; “Hey Mom; we need to talk.”’

  • Oh my! We're learning layers upon layers within Kirin Tarken! I really, really appreciate the frustration she feels at being asked to step back from a mission of exploration. It's natural for her to appreciate the importance of a humanitarian mission, but it's so relatable for her to have a pang for the what-might-have-been -- the exploratory mission that's been temporarily scuppered. And then the idea that Tarken will be stepping away from the Daradax for a secret mission certainly has precedent in the Trekverse. Not only does it add an element of unease for the crew, I'm loving how the mission has an element of personal discomfort for Tarken, asking her to lean into a part of herself she thought she had moved beyond. That's a dark, deep well for storytelling! (And then her mom's in it too!) Can't wait for more.

  • I was not expecting that. Kirin has a darkness to her that I find a tad bit exciting. I hope that we get to see a lot more of it in the up and coming stories for this “Fleet Action”. Keep them coming and keep up the character and character’s developments. Much appreciated. As always, keep up the great work and look forward to reading what is next.
