The stocky Tellarite doctor stormed into the sickbay. Nurse Gabriel stood over the Ensign who was writhing in pain. Kinaav approached the biobed and took the PADD from the nurse. “Ensign. The safeties are there for a reason.” he looked at the read out on the biobed, “No reason why this should be happening. Do you want to try to tell me why what you did was reasonable decision?”
Wincing in pain, Ensign Johann Fredricks looked at the doctor, “I was dared.”
“Of course you were.” The Tellarite rolled his eyes. “Let me guess, a girl.” Johann turned red, more red than from his pain. He looked at the readout again, “Well you will be here for a long while, maybe invite her to come and visit you.”
“You think she will?” The young man said with a smile.
Shrugging, the doctor handed the PADD back to the nurse, “Who knows. You are going to be here for about 6 hours getting that bone stitched together. You may want something to do. Nurse Gabriel, get the bone stitcher ready. And give him something for the pain.”
“Yes doctor.” She said sticking a hypospray to his neck and injecting him with pain meds. She then moved to the bone stitcher and started setting it up.
Kinaav watched the nurse work as she set up the bone stitcher. Starfleet officers were meant to be the best, and this is what he has to deal with. This ensign went through the same basic training as he did. Kinaav had amde his own stupid decisions, but for a girl. Never in his life.
“So what program were you running?” Kinaav said with an eyebrow raised.
“I would rather not say…” Johann said turning red again and looking away from the doctor.
“Well you are lying in my sickbay, and you want to play that game?” Kinaav said not very impressed with this ensign so far.
“I didn’t think it would end like this.” The Ensign said laying back as the pain starts to eubside.
“That’s what most say before they come and see me.” The Tellarite Doctor said. He shook his head and sighed, “Let me guess… you thought that you could do something that the holodeck safeties would normally prevent.”
“I thought it was a good idea at the time.”
“Looks like you thought wrong.”
Nurse Gabriel came back pushing a cart with the bone stitcher on it. “Doctor, the stitcher is ready.”
“You will have a long time to think about how smart this decision was. I will tell you…” Kinaav said as he helped Nurse Gabriel set up the stitcher over injured leg, “… if you want to make it far in starfleet, trying to impress women is not the first think you should do. If you keep seeing me, you won’t be impressing many people. Now lay back and we will check on you shortly.”
The nurse handed him a PADD, “Lots of reading and things to watch. Enjoy.”
The doctor walked into his office followed closely by his nurse, “It’s just crazy what these young officers think is okay. I swear we treat more holodeck injuries than actual away team injuries.” Kinaav grunted.
“It’s what we signed up for.”
“I know. Still bugs me. Should have gone into politics like my parents wanted me too. But here we are.” He looked at his computer, “On another note, can you have one of the corpsman go through the inventory and make sure we have enough before we depart?”
“I can do that. Anything else?”
“That’s all. Check on our friend out there in about 30 minutes. Make sure it’s working and setting properly.” The nurse nodded and she walked out of the doctor’s office. Shaking his head, he couldn’t believe that he was called back for a holodeck injury for a girl. Rubbing his temples and took a deep breath and leaned back. Opening the computer again, he started to look through orders that he needed to place from the Starbase.
