The corridors of the asteroid base rang with the sounds of battle. Disruptor fire, the clash of blades, the cries of warriors, and the screams of agony. Explosions from the orbital battle still shook the rough-hewn walls, sending dust cascading from the ceiling like rain. Torvak roared as he swung his bat’leth in a wide, deadly arc, cleaving through the chestplate of a renegade Klingon defender. The traitor crumpled, gurgling.
“Push forward!” Torvak bellowed, his deep voice echoing like thunder off the stone. “The HoD is in there! Kill any petaQ who slows us!”
Kha’zari fought beside him like an avenging storm. The massive Gorn warrior’s heavy disruptor cannon had long since run dry; now she wielded it as a club, shattering bones and crushing helmets with each swing. Her tail lashed out, sweeping two more defenders off their feet before her claws finished them. “Ssscum! Move or die!” she snarled.
House Varek warriors streamed behind them, a tide of black-and-crimson sashes cutting through the last pockets of resistance. Former K’Rath loyalists who had chosen redemption fought with particular fury, as if every enemy felled washed away another stain on their honor. But the command chamber’s heavy durasteel blast door loomed ahead, sealed off, reinforced, and mocking their progress.
Torvak slammed his fist against the intercom panel. “Negh’Var! This is Torvak! We are at the command level. The HoD and Jesar’Gatrak are inside with K’Rath and his abominations. We cannot breach this door quickly enough!”
K’Vathra’s voice came back sharp and strained over the comm. “Torvak, transporters are locked. Vornak is working the problem. Hold your position and keep that door under pressure. We will get reinforcements to you.”
Torvak snarled, already firing his disruptor rifle at the thick seams of the door. Molten durasteel dripped like blood. “Hurry, la’! The captain bleeds while we talk!”
On the bridge of the IKS Negh’Var, the deck plates vibrated with the fury of distant weapons fire. K’Vathra gripped the command chair, her knuckles white. The viewscreen showed the asteroid field still littered with burning debris from K’Rath’s shattered fleet.
“Vornak,” she snapped. “Status on the dampening field.”
The one-eyed science officer’s biosynthetic eye pulsed crimson as his fingers flew across the console. “Grent’s mongrel friend’s data chip is proving invaluable. The schematics show a maintenance shaft running parallel to the command level… narrow, poorly defended, intended for repair drones. It emerges behind the main chamber. But it will take time to navigate.”
Relar stood rigid at a rear auxiliary station, his emerald green skin flushed with barely contained fury. The young Orion’s hand gripped the hilt of his mek’leth so tightly the leather creaked. His eyes locked on K’Vathra, pleading without words.
K’Vathra met his gaze. She saw the fire there… the same fire that had carried a former slave from misery to the T’Ong’s lowest decks to this moment. Protocol demanded she order him to stay. Wisdom, and the desperate need of her captain, demanded otherwise.
“Relar,” she said, voice low but steel-edged. “Take two squads. Use the shaft, move as fast as possible. If you can reach them…”
Relar’s eyes blazed. He slammed a fist to his chest. “I will not fail.”
He was already moving, shouting orders to the nearest warriors, even though they outranked him as he sprinted for the transporter room. K’Vathra watched him go, a silent prayer to Kahless on her lips.
Inside the command chamber, chaos had narrowed to a killing floor slick with blood.
K’trok and Jesar’Gatrak fought back-to-back, a whirlwind of bat’leth and cha’leth against K’Rath’s elite augments. The abominations moved with terrifying speed, their black-veined muscles bulging grotesquely, eyes glowing with unnatural fury.
One augment lunged at K’trok with blinding speed. K’trok twisted, his bat’leth singing through the air. The blade bit deep into the creature’s shoulder, carving through enhanced muscle and bone. Blackish blood sprayed. The augment roared and swung a massive fist, but K’trok was already inside its guard. He drove the pommel of his weapon into its throat, then wrenched the blade free in a fountain of gore.
“That’s one!” K’trok roared, hope surging despite the burning in his muscles. They could win. Honor and skill could still triumph over twisted science.
Jesar’Gatrak moved with cold precision beside him. The Jem’Hadar parried a crushing blow, then drove his cha’leth upward through the second augment’s jaw and into its brain. He twisted viciously and yanked the weapon free. “Two!” he snarled, the word carrying grim satisfaction.
K’Rath watched from the center of the chamber, his own massive bat’leth held loosely, a predatory smile on his face. Three more augments remained… then two… then one. Each falling to coordinated strikes and unrelenting will. The air grew thick with the coppery smell of blood and the ozone of disruptor residue.
But K’Rath had not been idle. While his creations bought him time, he had pressed the hypo to his neck. The perfected serum now coursed through him.
The final augment charged Jesar’Gatrak from behind. The blow was devastating, a hammer-like strike to the base of the Jem’Hadar’s skull. Jesar’Gatrak staggered. The augment seized him by the armor, lifted the massive warrior as if he weighed nothing, and hurled him across the chamber. Jesar’Gatrak slammed into a computer console with bone-crunching force and lay still as sparks sprayed down on his limp body.
K’trok roared in fury. He exploded forward, bat’leth flashing. The last augment met him head-on. Steel clashed against enhanced bone. K’trok feinted high, then drove the curved blade deep into the creature’s chest, twisting viciously… Ribs snapped. The abomination convulsed once and collapsed in a twitching heap.
Now only K’Rath remained.
The fallen warlord had grown. Veins stood out like black cords beneath his skin. His muscles swelled grotesquely, tearing at the seams of his armor. His eyes burned with mad power.
“You are all alone, whelp of Morak,” K’Rath growled, voice deeper, resonant with unnatural strength. He advanced. “And you will die screaming.”
The duel that followed was a story for the epics.
K’trok attacked first, bat’leth swinging in a lethal overhead strike. K’Rath met it with contemptuous ease, the impact ringing like a hammer on an anvil. The force jarred K’trok’s arms to the shoulder. K’Rath countered with a backhand that sent the captain staggering, blood spraying from a split lip.
They circled, trading blows that would have felled lesser warriors. K’trok scored a deep gash across K’Rath’s thigh. K’Rath answered with a punch that cracked a rib. K’trok’s bat’leth carved a bloody furrow across the traitor’s chest. K’Rath grabbed the blade with one bare hand, ignoring the laceration, and yanked K’trok forward into a savage headbutt that split the captain’s brow ridge, blinding him as blood poured into his eyes.
Pain flared… vision blurred. Yet K’trok fought on, drawing on every lesson, every scar, every memory of his life and the long road back from ruin. He landed a spinning strike that opened K’Rath’s side. For a moment, hope flared again.
Then the serum’s full power manifested. K’Rath’s speed became a blur. A brutal kick to the chest lifted K’trok off his feet and slammed him into the deck. Before he could rise, K’Rath was upon him… fists like duranium hammers. Blow after blow rained down. Armor cracked. Blood filled K’trok’s mouth as teeth were knocked loose.
K’trok tried to rise once more, bat’leth raised in defiance. K’Rath shattered the weapon with a single strike and drove his fist into K’trok’s gut. The captain crumpled, gasping, vision swimming with darkness.
K’Rath loomed over him, chest heaving, blood and sweat mixing on his monstrous frame. He placed a heavy boot on K’trok’s chest, pinning him.
“Look at you,” K’Rath sneered. “The great HoD K’trok, grandson of Davok. Reduced to this. Your father was wiser… he knew compromise was survival. You cling to empty honor while the galaxy passes you by. Weak… Pathetic. My new Empire needs strength, not songs and blood oaths. And now you die knowing you failed.”
K’trok tasted blood and defiance. His body screamed in agony, but his spirit remained unbroken. He glared up at his enemy. “Then send me to Sto’Vo’Kor… with honor. I will wait for you there… in the halls of the worthy. Yet you will never join us.”
He closed his eyes, ready for the final blow, the ancestors’ call echoing in his mind.
K’Rath stiffened. With a grunt, a spray of steaming dark blood shot onto K’trok’s battered face. A blade protruded from the side of K’Rath’s neck. The warlord gurgled, eyes widening in shock. He staggered, boot lifting off K’trok as he spun.
Young Relar stood there, defiant, green eyes blazing with righteous fury. Blood from the fight in the shafts streaked his face. Behind him, two warriors from his team secured the entrance.
“Traitor scum,” Relar snarled. He raised his disruptor pistol and fired point-blank into K’Rath’s chest.
The blast hurled the warlord backward. He collapsed in a smoking heap, blood pooling beneath him.
As K’Rath fell, his body betrayed him. Veins ruptured across his form in black webs. Muscles convulsed and tore. For a few horrific seconds, he thrashed, becoming something even more monstrous… skin splitting, bones cracking audibly… before the unstable enhancements consumed him from within. With a final, gurgling scream, K’Rath lay still.
Relar stepped forward and spat on the corpse. “You do not deserve an honorable death!”
K’trok, barely conscious, reached up with a trembling, bloodied hand. Relar grasped it firmly in the warrior’s grip… forearm to forearm.
“You… have the heart of a true Klingon,” K’trok rasped, pride swelling in his chest despite the pain. The young Orion who had once been nothing but a broken slave had become the instrument of deliverance. House Varek endured. Honor endured…
Darkness claimed him.
