The continuing adventures of a little ball of fur in a hard place.

Hungry.

That was the first thing.

It sat, Round and still, but inside there was a pulling. A hollow tug that squeezed tighter the longer it ignored it. Warm was good. Warm meant safe. But warm did not fill the empty.

The small one shifted.

This place was warm. Too warm in places. The metal beneath it breathed heat, pulsing in uneven rhythms. It pressed itself lower, letting the warmth seep through fur, but the hunger stayed.

Hunger always stayed.

The thing around it growled again.

It did that often.

Not the steady hum from before, not the calm and soft movement it remembered. This was sharper. Louder. A constant edge to it, like something always just about to snap.

The small one didn’t understand it.

It only knew this place did not rest.

It lifted itself slightly, tiny motions, cautious. Its fur bristled as the ship shuddered again beneath it. Heavy steps passed somewhere beyond the thin wall. Loud things. Big things.

The small one stayed very still.

Waiting was safe.

Waiting had worked before.

But hunger was louder now.

It chirped softly to itself, a quiet opening sound, almost hopeful. Maybe food would come. It waited.

Nothing came.

The small one shifted in its space.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Its world was narrow here, tucked between thing cables and rough plating. A good place. A hidden place. It had stayed here for…. A long time.

Time was hard.

There were no soft circles here, no dimming lights that whispered that it was safe to sleep. The glow was always red and always watching.

The small one didn’t like the red.

It crept forward.

Just a little.

Its tiny body squeezed through the gap where the heat pipes ran closest to the wall. The air outside was harsher, tinged with something bitter and sharp. Not like before. Not like the place with gentle hands and quiet voices.

This place smelt angry.

The small one moved forward regardless.

Food.

It needed food.

The corridor beyond stretched long and narrow. The lights bled red across the metal floor, casting deep shadows that the small one quickly slipped into. It stayed low, barely moving, letting its fur absorb the darkness.

A sound.

Heavy. Fast.

The small one froze.

A shadow slammed past the corridor opening.

Loud.

Very loud.

Voices followed. Deep. Harsh. Not like anything it knew. They struck the air like blows, sharp and jagged, making the small one press itself tight against the wall.

No soft in those sounds.

None at all.

The small one waited until they were gone.

Then a little longer.

Then it moved again.

Food.

It followed smells.

Tiny ones at first. Bits. Crumbs. Traces left behind where something had been consumed quickly and without care. The small one found a fleck near the base of a wall panel. It sniffed cautiously.

Strange. But…. Food.

It nibbled.

The taste was strong. Too strong. Bitter and burning in a way that made its fur twitch, but it swallowed anyway.

The hunger eased,,, A little, but not enough.

The small one chirped again, softer this time. Less questioning. More determined.

There would be more.

There had to be.

It moved further.

The ship shifted beneath it again, a deep rolling motion that rippled through the metal. For a moment the small one felt weightless. Its tiny body adjusted instinctively, pressing low again, gripping the ground with unseen strength.

The place did not move like the other one.

This one surged.

Pushed.

As if it was chasing something or being chased.

The small one didn’t know what those things meant.

It only knew it made the walls uneasy.

It found a wider opening.

A doorway left just enough open for something small to slip through unnoticed.

The small one hesitated.

Inside there were smells.

Many se=mells.

Sharp, heavy, unfamiliar but there.

It slipped through.

The room was louder than the corridor, filled with constant movement and metallic clatter. Objects hung, stacked, stored and some glistened.

The small one moved quickly through the shadows.

Food everywhere. But also… not food.

It approached a spill on a low surface. Thick and dark. It sniffed.

Wrong.

Very wrong.

It retreated at once, fur puffed.

Not all food was safe.

It had learned that.

Another smell.

This one lighter.

It moved again,

There, something had fallen near the edge of a surface. Hard. Dry. Ignored.

The small one approached it, carefully.

Sniff.

Better, still Strange, but better.

It nibbled again.

The hunger eased further.

Warm spread through its tiny body as it ate, and for a moment, just a moment, everything felt right again.

Safe, alive and fed.

A noise broke it.

Loud, too loud.

The small one darted, vanishing into a narrow gap between stacked containers just as something massive entered. The air shifted with its arrival, heavy steps slamming against the floor.

Voices again.

Closer.

The small one pressed itself deep into the gap.

Fur tight, silent.

The voices rose, sharp and hard, crashing together like metal. One louder than the others. Dominant. Angry.

Always angry.

The small one didn’t understand anger.

It only knew it meant danger.

It stayed hidden.

Time passed.

Or maybe it didn’t.

Eventually the noise faded, heavy presence leaving the room. The door slammed shut behind it with a final echoing crash.

Silence followed.

Not true silence.

This place never gave that.

But quieter, safer.

The small one stayed very still now, just in case.

Then slowly it relaxed.

Full enough. Warm enough. For now.

It curled into the corner it had claimed, pressing itself into the tight space where nothing large could reach. Its tiny body softened, fur settling.

It might sleep.

But something felt different. The hum shifted again.

Lower, heavier.

Like before when something had gone wrong.

The lights dimmed slightly.

The red deepened.

The small one stirred.

It knew this feeling.

The place was hurting.

Not like hunger, something different.

The vibrations underneath became uneven, stuttering in waves beneath the floor. Metal creaked in long slow stretched. Somewhere distant, something struck hard enough to echo through every surface.

The small one chirped quietly.

Concern.

It didn’t understand this place.

But it understood the feeling, and this did not feel good.

It pressed closer to the wall, seeking whatever warmth remained. The pipe nearby had cooled slightly, its steady heat flickering.

The small one didn’t like that.

Warm and safe, warm should not leave.

It waited.

There was nothing else to do.

Waiting was always the answer.

The trembling continued, rising and falling. Noises echoed, sharp bursts followed by long grinding vibrations. The air itself seemed tighter, as if the place was holding its breath.

Then…

Slowly…

The hum steadied. The warm began to return. The pipes breathed again.

The small one started to relax again.

Safe again.

For now.

It chirped once, a small satisfied sound. The loud things had fed this place, or fixed it, or something.

It didn’t matter.

The small one only needed it to work. To keep moving. To keep being warm.

It shifted slightly in its hiding place.

The hunger was quieter now. Not gone. But manageable. It would come again. It always did. But for the moment there was comfort. There was warmth. There was enough space to exist.

The small one drifted to rest now, dreaming,

Not of this place, never this place.

It dreamed of soft lights instead of red. Of quiet sounds that didn’t hurt. Of gentle vibrations that soothed instead of threatened.

And food, easy food, kind food, food that didn’t bite back.

When it woke, the place was moving again.

It always was, but it was faster now, stronger. Like it had decided something.

The small one stretched, only a little, and let out a soft trill.

It wasn’t alone, not really, this place was always there. Loud, angry and endless. It didn’t understand it. It didn’t need to.

It only needed to live inside it.

To find warmth beneath its bones. To find food in its forgotten corners. To stay unseen. The small one shifted deeper into its chosen place. It was learning.

This place did not stop. This place did not care. But it had spaces, soft spaces, hidden spaces. As long as those existed, so could the small one.

It curled tighter. Content enough… For now.

And when the hunger returned, it would go looking again.
