Academy Report #11: Instructor Updates

October 4, 2025

It’s the start of a new semester at Bravo Fleet Academy. That makes right now the perfect time to reflect in our personal logs about what we’ve learned this year and how we want to elevate our development goals going forward.

For Bravo Fleet members, we have the New Frontiers campaign approaching! Now is the right time to brush up on designing your command page in the Academy’s Command Management Program or refining your storytelling in the Academy’s Fiction Writing Program. The campaign will offer ample opportunity for you to highlight your new skills.

It’s also a time for reflection for the Academy team.

Earlier this summer, Captain Zachary Murphy stepped down from Academy staff after nearly nine months of service. I want to thank Murphy for the time and dedication offered to our members’ development. Despite the time passed since Murphy’s previous stint as Deputy Academy Commandant, they beamed right in to instruct our members, and develop Starbase Bravo story scenarios, as if no time had passed at all.

With the development of new programs ongoing, I’m excited to announce that Captain Khim Samnang has joined the Bravo Fleet Academy as a Staff Assistant! You may know Khim Samnang as Z on Discord. Z brings to the Academy seven months of experience on Task Force staff, first as Task Force Executive Officer and then as Task Force Commanding Officer of Task Force 17. Since then, Z has continued to show a generous spirit of community citizenship. Z’s understanding of operations, and eagerness to enhance the member experience, makes Z an obvious choice to guide our members through learning experiences on the ways of Bravo Fleet.

Recruiting Drive

Should anyone else have a passion for developing inquiring minds, you’re welcome to apply for academy staff positions too. Ideally, our staff members benefit from experience in Moodle or other learning management systems, experience in instructional design, or demonstrate effective communication with a passion for mentoring and guiding eager learners.

We don’t require all of these experiences, but we are looking for well-rounded experience that may include:

  • Being generous with writing comments in Stories and the Discord #writing channel both during and in between Fleet Actions.
  • Demonstrating clarity, specificity of feedback in Competition Standard comments, and writing comments in an empathetic way.
  • Showing up as a leader in RPGs or sandboxes. This means not only writing frequently, but proactively creating subplots that last over multiple Stories and include multiple members.
  • Completing all Academy badges with attention to detail and courageous creativity to honestly experiment with new skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of a wide range of Bravo Fleet activities through Task Force / Task Group leadership.

If you’re interested in applying to the Academy staff, feel free to DM the Academy Commandant.
