Neelix’ Thanksgiving Recipes

Description

As Morale Officer, Neelix has heard the crew discuss their dismay at not being able to celebrate Thanksgiving with their families at home. The computer’s database has, of course, given him an idea as to what a thanksgiving dinner looks like, but this is the Voyager – resources are sparse. And it’s Neelix, he will definitely be adding a unique twist to any dish he creates.

In this competition, you are tasked to create the recipe Neelix will be using to surprise the crew, and put them into the text box. Draw inspiration from classic Thanksgiving dishes, but consider the setting and availability of ingredients.

Criteria

  • Submissions should be between 100 and 300 words in length
  • Submissions will be judged on Originality, and Suitability

Neelix’s Cosmic Thanksgiving Leola Root Casserole
(Serves 8 humanoids or one particularly hungry Hirogen)

Ingredients
3 medium-sized leola roots (or Earth potatoes, if your replicator is being fussy)
2 cups of terran cranberry puree (don’t substitute with Jelran berry; it’s much too tart!)
1 cup of Kes-grown herbs (Earth parsley and thyme will suffice)
1 cup of grated cheese from the Delta Quadrant (or Earth’s cheddar—how quaint!)
1 cup of cream (preferably harvested from the Muphirian Fuzzbeast but replicated cream works too)
A pinch of nebula-dried spices (Earth’s paprika, nutmeg, and a touch of black pepper)
2 cups of sautéed vegetables (celery, carrots, and onions—an Earthly "trinity")
1 cup of plasma-roasted nuts (pecans or walnuts) for crunch

Instructions
Prepare the Leola Roots
Peel and chop your leola roots into cubes. (For you Earthlings, substitute with potatoes or yams—fascinatingly versatile tubers!) Boil them in salted water until tender. Mash them with cream and a sprinkle of nebula-dried spices. Set aside.

Create the Stellar Base
In a pan, sauté your vegetables until golden and aromatic, as though welcoming a Klingon feast! Stir in the Kes-grown herbs and cranberry puree. Simmer gently, allowing the flavors to intermingle like a Federation peace treaty.

Assemble the Layers
In a casserole dish, layer half of the mashed leola root mixture, followed by the sautéed vegetable medley. Repeat the process, finishing with a generous sprinkling of grated cheese and plasma-roasted nuts for texture.

Bake to Perfection
Place the casserole in a preheated thermal oven (Earthly ovens: 375°F/190°C). Bake for 25 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbling like the surface of a newly formed nebula.

Garnish and Serve
Allow the dish to rest briefly, then garnish with a touch more herbs and perhaps a decorative swirl of cranberry puree. Serve warm, alongside other intergalactic delicacies like replicated turkey or Vulcan plomeek pie.

There you have it! A Thanksgiving dish worthy of the finest mess halls across the galaxy. Enjoy it with friends, family, and perhaps a toast to good health and safe travels through the stars.

When I refer to Kes-grown herbs, I’m imagining a blend of the fresh, vibrant greenery that Kes herself might have cultivated in Voyager's hydroponics bay. Though specific Delta Quadrant plant species aren't fully cataloged (thank goodness for Janeway's patience with my experiments!), we can infer they’d be fragrant, versatile, and perfect for culinary use.

If we're Earth-bound, we can approximate Kes-grown herbs with a combination of:

Parsley (bright and fresh)
Thyme (earthy and aromatic)
Chives (mild and onion-like)
Dill (soft and slightly sweet)
Feel free to experiment with herbs that suit your palate! After all, Kes always approached her gardening with an open heart—and a sense of adventure. Add a pinch of this and a dash of that, and soon you'll feel like you're in the Delta Quadrant yourself!

Oh, and remember: if the casserole doesn't come out quite right, just tell your guests it's an "experimental Talaxian delicacy." They’ll never know the difference!

Live long and feast well!

Neelix's Delta Quadrant Thanksgiving Surprise

Leola Root Gratitude Casserole

Ingredients:
3 large leola roots (peeled and diced)
2 cups of Neelix's Delta Root Mash (a mix of local starchy roots found on regional M-Class planets)
1 cup of Talaxian spiced kelp (for a savory, salty tang)
1 cup of preserved Federation cranberries (rationed, of course!)
1 cup of rehydrated gagh beans (for protein and texture)
½ cup of grated Norcadia tuber cheese (replicated, if available)
1 tsp of foraged nebula herbs (adds a fragrant, rosemary-like aroma)
1 cup of plomeek broth (to keep it moist)
A sprinkle of replicated breadcrumbs or crushed galroc crackers

Instructions:
1.Prepare the Base: In a large mixing bowl, combine diced leola root, Delta Root Mash, and rehydrated gagh beans. Mash together until the mixture is lumpy but cohesive.
2. Add the Layers of Flavor: Fold in the Talaxian spiced kelp, cranberries, and nebula herbs. Add the plomeek broth gradually until the mixture is moist but not soupy.
3. Assemble the Casserole: Spread the mixture evenly in a medium baking dish. Top with a generous layer of grated Norcadia tuber cheese and a sprinkle of crushed crackers or breadcrumbs for a crunchy finish.
4. Bake: Place in Voyager's galley oven at medium heat (about 175°C equivalent) for 25 minutes or until the top is golden brown and bubbling.

Serve: Neelix suggests serving with his signature Plasmic Pumpkin Puree and a spoon of Gravy of Gratitude made from drippings of the casserole and plomeek broth.

Original Twist: Leola roots provide a distinctive Delta Quadrant flair, while the kelp and gagh beans make it hearty and protein-rich, ensuring the dish embodies Thanksgiving's spirit of abundance 75,000 light years from Earth!
