Summary

Lieutenant Commander Nathanial Rhodes is currently the Chief Medical Officer onboard Eos Station, a Watchtower-class station situated close to the Federation-Romulan border.

Appearance

Standing at 5’8″ tall, Nathan isn’t the most intimidating figure to have ever worn the Starfleet uniform, but then his quiet charm and convivial personality couldn’t portray him as anything other than an approachable individual with an impeccable bedside manner. He is almost always presented in a clean-cut manner with great attention to detail which reflects the great care he takes in his professional and personal lives to maintain an organised and tidy environment.

Dark hair and pale skin only emphasise the vibrancy of his cobalt gaze which compliments his warm smile perfectly. He’s a very expressive individual, so it’s very rare that his mood or way of thinking isn’t immediately obvious. He takes great pride in his work, so is never happier than when he’s pottering around the biolab or working on research.

Personality

Nathan still maintains the natural qualities that made it easy for him to make friends as a child, though the loss of his parents during the 2385 attack on Mars left him with a gradually dulling grief that sees him more withdrawn from social life than he otherwise would be. Regular therapy helps him deal with the traumas of his past and is a good tool that has helped him become a better Doctor.

Having been on the station for a little over three months, he has started to make headway as far as nurturing relationships with his colleagues is concerned, but he genuinely finds it hard to break out of the introverted lifestyle that he carved out for himself upon graduating from the Academy.

History

Nathanial William Rhodes was born in 2363 to Dr Michael Rhodes and Catherine Rhodes, a physician and school teacher respectively. As their only child, some would say he was mollycoddled as an infant, but their dedication and enjoyment of parenthood simply meant that they were protective and encouraging. Growing up, Nathanial had a happy childhood where his natural curiosity about the world around him and his caring nature allowed him to make friends easily. He was a genuinely affable son, friend and student.

There was no real discussion that he’d follow in his mother or father’s footsteps; ultimately it was during his high school years that he decided to focus on medicine. When the time came to apply to medical school, the Starfleet Medical Academy was a surprising contender where the chance to travel and maintain a solid career appealed to Nathanial.

With his parents’ blessing, he applied to the Academy on Earth and began his eight-year course of study in medicine. For the initial four years, the program proved to be intense but with mutual support from his group of friends, they all succeeded in progressing to the next stage of their studies.

Disaster struck in 2385 when an attack on Mars by rogue synthetics led to all but the destruction of the planet and both of his parents were identified as casualties. The loss sent Nathanial into a depressive state and as a result, his studies began to suffer significantly. Seeing a rapid decline in a sizeable number of students, the Academy introduced counselling programs which signalled the start of Nathanials mental health journey. Through his own dealings with loss and the grief that followed, Nathanial experienced first-hand how invaluable medicine had been in allowing him to heal and continue with his studies.

In his eyes, graduating as a fully qualified medical officer in 2389 was the most perfect way to acknowledge the trauma of his past, but to also honour and celebrate his mother and father. With no doubt that his passion lay in helping others, Nathanial’s career continued to flourish and on commendation alone, he rose through the ranks to become Chief Medical Officer of Eos Station.
