Summary
Kelly is a full Betazoid who holds herself proudly no matter the situation. Typically polite, Adaa can be brutally honest, far more than most humans are comfortable with. As is customary with her people, Kelly will not engage in any form of telepathy with another without their consent. That said, at times, the emotions of others can run high and she can’t help but notice. Adept at combat, Yeoman Adaa is more proficient and comfortable with administrative duties and proudly attends to the Captain’s affairs.
Appearance
Of average height and a better than average build, Yeoman Kelly Adaa surpasses the physical requirements for Starfleet. She has dark brown hair, fair skin and the distinctive black iris associated with her species. Kelly wears only a moderate amount of makeup both on and off duty.
Personality
The one word that best describes Yeoman Adaa is engaged. She is genuinely concerned for all those around her and does her best to console those closest to her or any of her friends. Part of this is undoubtedly due to her Betazoid nature. At times she can be too honest for comfort, but Adaa has learned to preface her opinions with tack and will only share when asked.
Well cultured, she holds herself with both dignity and poise like Betazoid royalty, though Adaa has never said if she was a member of one of the five houses. Her time spent within matters of diplomacy has given Kelly a cordial tack when in a formal gathering. Off duty, she is usually cheerful, but can become overwhelmed by the emotions of others.
History
Early Life 2374 – 2392
During the Cardassian occupation of Betazed, Dr. Cetin Adaa was forced to aid the enemy in brutal telepathic experiments upon his own people. The Doctor’s pregnant wife, Learra Chaimi-Adaa, was held hostage to force the physician to comply. Two months into the occupation, Thomas Kelly, a Starfleet Commander, led a team to rescue Learra among others. Once she was freed, Dr. Adaa refused to comply and was executed. Five months later, Learra gave birth to Kelly Lusa Adaa. The girl was named after the Commander who lost his life to the Cardassians just a few weeks after Learra’s rescue.
After the occupation, Betazed remained on heightened security until the Dominion War was over. Even then, the populous remained vigilant as the stain of their downfall remained present in their memories. Many suffered from mental instabilities due to suffering during the war. Learra was one who was hospitalized. Her daughter, Lusa Adaa (as her mother called her) was raised primarily by her nanny for the first three years of life.
By the time Lusa was six years old, her mother had remarried and was pregnant with her second child. Lusa’s stepfather, Aamrah Zux, was an administrator to the Third House of Betazoid. Learra dedicated her life to art, science and getting pregnant. She gave birth to three additional daughters within the next ten years.
As was typical, Lusa came into her telepathic abilities as a teenager, and mastered her powers quickly. Further into her adolescence, Adaa attended government functions with her stepfather, certain she would pursue diplomacy as a career path. Her mother, however, pulled the girl toward less political goals, further teaching the teenager the qualities of science, religion and art. The young Betazed found art to be a relaxing hobby, but the temples were not for her. Science, specifically chemistry, became an interest.
As to her personal life, Lusa dated several people during her adolescence, but never settled with one individual. The closest she came to a steady, was a human boy, one year her senior. The two dated for a few months until he was shipped off world with his family.
Though chemistry did catch her interest, the remnants of the Cardasian occupation still lingered in the minds of Lusa’s people. She enrolled at the University of Betazoid for a major in political science, on course for her career as a diplomat. However, in 2392, after meeting with a Starfleet recruiter*, Lusa suddenly dropped out of university and enrolled in Starfleet Academy for the same major. Her family and friends were astonished by the sudden change, but supported her effort nonetheless.
*the recruiter was a Supervisor
Starfleet Academy 2392 – 2396
Prior to her enrollment in Starfleet, Lusa was excited for her future, but once at the academy that excitement waned. Her closest sister, Layi, attempted to ascertain the cause of Lusa’s sudden decision through telepathy, but found that part of her mind to be blocked. Though Layi could feel her sister’s distress, Lusa would not go into details. Both sisters parted ways after.
Once at the academy, Lusa began using the name Kelly. According to the cadet, it was to honor the Commander who saved her and her mother’s lives during the Cardassian occupation of Betazed.
One saving factor of the academy for Kelly was the campus itself. The Mellstoxx III campus was built to emulate Betazed, which did give the girl comfort. The aesthetics and numerous cadets she befriended, slowly aided Adaa out of her depression. Still on track with a political science major, Kelly found she was adept at administrative duties and languages. Adaa later minored in linguistics.
While Kelly excelled at the academy, her interests and proficiencies leaned closer to the clerical. During her senior year, she was a records officer on the training vessel, USS Gibraltar.
Starbase 11 2396 – 2400
Upon graduation from the academy, Adaa was assigned as Yeoman 3rd Class to Starbase 11. Within the administration department, she was tasked with several clerical duties. She worked in the legal department for a time before a transfer to the station’s resident diplomatic corps.
The USS North Sea 2400 – Present
Once Captain Fawkes took command of the USS North Sea, roughly half the crew transferred or was reassigned and she was tasked with finding a new crew. She had a soft spot for her current Yeoman, a Bolian by the name of Marihino. However Marihino transferred to a starbase after the Xenius incident. Fawkes sifted through several applicants until she finally chose Yeoman 1st Class Kelly Adaa. Captain Fawkes was impressed with Adaa’s skills, but it was her Betazoid heritage that won her the spot. Betazoids were known for their brutal honesty.
