History

Elizabeth Jane Kyle (b. November 3, 2366) is a Starfleet engineer. She was born in Capital City, Terra Alpha Colony to Anthony and Sandra Kyle. She has one younger brother George, who is at Starfleet Academy.

Elizabeth grew up in the tiny community of Riley City, which was located in the mountains of Terra Alpha. She attended Central Mountain High School and was on the Parrises Squares and Rodeo teams.

STARFLEET ACADEMY

Elizabeth entered Starfleet Academy in 2384.  She worked hard and was able to get on the Dean’s List her first year. She spent most of her leave in England with a few friends she had met at the Academy.  She joined several Academy sports teams her second year and became the team captain for the Academy’s track and Parrises Squares teams by her senior year.

She was invited by Professor Parvati Pandey’s Ethics of Command seminars.  These were limited to only the most promising of cadets. The class worked out the ethics of command.  Towards the end of the Pandey posed scenarios that faced a former student of hers. One dealt with the merging of two crew members through a transporter accident, which merged them into one, but a distinct new life. Do you allow the one to live? Do you separate the crew members killing the one so that the original two could live?  Elizabeth decided that while killing the one was contrary to everything she valued, restoring the original two was less damaging. She was trading two lives for one after all.  Pandey didn’t tell Elizabeth she was right but did say that the captain in question made that same decision.

During the summer of her junior year, she was assigned to the USS Intrepid for her field studies. It was challenging,  and she made several mistakes due that period,  but it cemented that engineering was the direction she would go.

She graduated in 2389 dead middle of her class.  While she did excel her first year, she quickly lost interest in her studies.  Classroom lectures were boring and the homework was tedious but she persevered, and she earned a degree in Structural Engineering and Warp Field Theory.

USS HERMES

Upon graduation, she was assigned to the USS Hemes. While she excelled in her job her interpersonal flaws often got in the way, but the Chief Engineer, Lt. Commander Karl Douglas saw potential in her and promoted her to lead Gamma shift.

USS Shiloah

In 2390 she transferred to the Shiloah seeking the Assistant Chief Engineer position. She initially didn’t ’t get it until 2393. On the Shiloah she also started taking on Operations duties, as well as taking command classes. She didn’t know if she ever wanted to be a first officer or even captain someday, but she liked to keep those doors open to her and would take on the Gamma Shift bridge watch.

USS WESSEX

In 2394 Elizabeth transferred to the USS Wessex as the chief engineer. The Wessex was a tired old Miranda class, a veteran of the Tzenkathy and Dominion wars assigned to patrol the Federation border with the Tholians.

Almost all of the systems were out of date for at least a decade and several key systems such as the warp drive was neglected and on the verge of failure.   Despite long hours, she lead her teams into completely overhauling and refitting the ship when practical.  And an action that earned her an accommodation from Captain Jerot Kyle.

In January of 2399, the USS Wessex fell victim to Starfleet’s most recent round of fleet modernization and was decommissioned on March 10, 2399. Most of the crew received transfers,  but unwilling to take a demotion Elizabeth elected to take extended leave and return home until a Chief Engineer position opened up.

PERSONALITY & TRAITS

She is an excellent problem solver and has a very good understanding of Engineering. Elizabeth is a loner and prefers not working in groups. This makes leadership positions particularly challenging for her, but she has learned to overcome her biggest areas of weakness.  She is not the worst leader, but the crew can take advantage of her.

Elizabeth is an accomplished violinist and can play the cello, guitar, and saxophone. She is also a voracious reader and has a particular interest in historical fiction.

She was active in rodeo, particularly barrel racing when she was younger.   And while, she can’t maintain the rodeo circuit while in Starfleet she rides on the holodeck, and will go to barrel races when she is home on leave.
