Early Life and Starfleet Academy

Akiyama Makoto was born on November 17, 2357, in Uenohara, Japan. Her parents were both astrophysicists who frequently traveled for work, leaving Akiyama to look after her younger sibling and manage the household. Despite her busy home life, Akiyama excelled academically, particularly in mathematics and physics. She also developed a love of tinkering with gadgets, building robots, and other devices in her spare time.

When Akiyama was sixteen years old, a massive earthquake struck her home region, causing widespread devastation and destruction. Akiyama and her family were caught in the middle of the disaster, with their home collapsing around them.

Akiyama’s parents were killed instantly, leaving her and her younger brother trapped under the rubble for several hours before they were finally rescued. Akiyama suffered a broken leg and several other injuries, while her brother was left with serious internal injuries that required extensive surgery.

The loss of her parents and the traumatic experience of being trapped under the rubble for hours left Akiyama with severe emotional scars. She struggled with feelings of guilt and helplessness, believing that she could have done more to save her parents. Her brother’s injuries also left her with a deep sense of responsibility and a need to protect him at all costs.

Despite the trauma of the earthquake, Akiyama was able to find strength and resilience in the face of adversity. She channeled her pain and grief into a desire to help others and protect those who are vulnerable. This ultimately led her to pursue a career in Starfleet, where she could use her skills and training to make a difference in the lives of others.

As soon as Akiyama became of age, she was accepted into Starfleet Academy.

Akiyama’s natural aptitude for tinkering and her ability to understand complex systems made her well-suited for a career in engineering. However, during her time at the academy, she found that she was more drawn to the strategic and analytical aspects of Starfleet operations, which led her to pursue a career in that field rather than Engineering.

Despite this, Akiyama’s love for tinkering and understanding complex systems remained with her throughout her career. She often spent her free time on board ships and starbases tinkering with technology and finding ways to optimize systems to improve performance. This passion for tinkering not only helped her better understand the technology used in her strategic operations work but also gave her a unique perspective on how to approach complex problems from a different angle.

Over time, Akiyama’s tinkering and problem-solving skills would prove invaluable in her command roles, as she was able to think creatively and outside the box to find solutions to difficult problems. Her background in both strategic operations and engineering gave her a well-rounded skill set that allowed her to excel in a variety of situations and make critical decisions under pressure.

Starbase 375

After graduating, she was commissioned as an Administrations Officer on Starbase 375. It was not her first choice, and it came as a disappointment to her at first. She had hoped to be assigned to a more active role on a starship and was initially frustrated by the prospect of a desk job. However, she quickly recognized the importance of her role in ensuring the smooth operation of the Starbase and the vital contributions she could make.

She was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the starbase. This included managing personnel records, overseeing logistics and supply chain operations, and coordinating with other departments to ensure that the base ran smoothly. Akiyama was well-suited for this role, and likely why Starfleet saw to post her where they had, due to her strong organizational skills and attention to detail. She was able to keep track of numerous tasks and projects simultaneously, ensuring that everything was completed on time and to the highest standards.

In addition to her administrative duties, Akiyama also acted as a liaison between the starbase and local governments, businesses, and other organizations. She worked closely with these groups to build strong relationships and partnerships that would benefit both the starbase and the surrounding community.

Akiyama’s role as an Administrations Officer was challenging but rewarding, and it allowed her to develop many skills that would serve her well throughout her Starfleet career. She learned how to manage complex operations, work effectively with a wide range of individuals and organizations, and navigate complex bureaucratic systems with ease.

USS Melbourne (Nebula-class)

Akiyama’s natural aptitude for strategic operations was recognized early on in her Starfleet career. Her analytical mind, her strong problem-solving skills, and her ability to anticipate the movements of enemy forces made her a valuable asset in this field and quickly gained her a reputation for it. Her experiences in Starfleet Academy and as an Administrations Officer gave her a solid foundation in logistics, resource management, and personnel coordination, which served her well in her role as a Strategic Operations Officer aboard the USS Melbourne, a Nebula-class starship designed for tactical missions, in 2382. During her time on the Melbourne, she was involved in several critical missions, including a tense standoff with a hostile alien race that threatened to destabilize the entire sector. Akiyama’s calm demeanor and strategic thinking helped to diffuse the situation and prevent a major conflict.

USS Chesapeake (Akira-class)

In 2393, Akiyama was transferred to the USS Chesapeake, an Akira-class starship, where she was assigned as Executive Officer. The Chesapeake was designed for long-range exploration and scientific research, and Akiyama played a key role in several diplomatic missions, helping to negotiate treaties and establish relationships with newly discovered worlds. She was involved in a survey mission to the Gamma Quadrant, during which the Chesapeake discovered several new species and made contact with a previously unknown civilization, the Jikaro, a highly advanced and reclusive species. Akiyama led the negotiations with the Jikaro, which required a delicate balance of diplomacy and assertiveness. She managed to establish a peaceful relationship with the Jikaro, which led to valuable scientific and technological knowledge for Starfleet.

USS Aquarius (Excelsior II-class)

After her successful stint as Executive Officer on the USS Chesapeake, Akiyama was transferred to the USS Aquarius, an Excelsior II-class vessel as a result of an immediate vacancy that needed to be filled. Her promotion to Commanding Officer was not initially planned. When her former Captain was forced to take a sudden medical leave of absence, Akiyama stepped up to assume command of the vessel. She quickly gained the respect of her crew through her decisive actions and level-headedness under pressure. Her exemplary performance as Acting Captain ultimately led to her promotion to Commanding Officer. Despite the unexpected circumstances of her promotion, Akiyama embraced her new role with enthusiasm and a fierce determination to lead her crew to success.
