Summary

Lieutenant Dujan Young was a Starfleet Officer serving during the late 24th and early 25th centuries. He was killed in the line of duty on September 2, 2400.

History

Early Life

Much of Dujan’s early life is shrouded in mystery. His date of birth has been estimated to have been in the spring of 2365. The first foster family he was placed with chose to celebrate his birthday on March 15 and he’s continued to do so ever since. Both of his parents were Trill, whether they were joined or not is unknown. He was orphaned at the age of two, no trace of his parents were ever found. The authorities in Farius Prime declared them missing, presumed dead and Dujan was placed into foster care. With no idea of his surname, the authorities gave him the surname Trill.

His childhood was spent moving from one foster home to another, never staying anywhere longer than a few months, never putting down roots or forming deep attachments with the families he lived with or the kids he went to school with. Dujan would spend hours on his own, losing himself in books or drawing on a sketch pad.

Dujan fell through the cracks in the foster system at the age of twelve. He dropped out of school and began working as a runner for some low level crime boss on the outskirts of Farius’ capital city. When not running errands, Dujan hung out at the bar the crime boss owned. He developed a friendship with an older human woman who worked at the bar. Stella became a mother figure to him, making sure he was eating enough, giving him books on maths, history and science so he could continue to learn. It was Stella who planted the idea of leaving Farius and attending Starfleet Academy.

Shortly after Dujan celebrated his seventeenth birthday, Stella was killed as she was being mugged. She’d been the closest thing to a mother that he’d ever had and Dujan was devastated by her death. Deciding that there was nothing left for him on Farius, Dujan decided he would make his way to Earth and apply to Starfleet Academy. The problem, however, was that he didn’t have the resources to secure passage on a ship. He managed to stow away on one, the Erewon-class passenger transport S.S. Good Hope, which ran a regular route between Farius, Tellar, Earth and Andoria.

A day and a half into the journey, he was discovered by a member of the crew and brought before the captain. Dujan thought that the Captain would lock him up for the remainder of the journey to Tellar before handing him over to the authorities there. Instead, the captain offered him the chance to earn his fare to Earth. Dujan agreed enthusiastically and started shadowing members of the crew, learning the ropes. By the time the transport reached Earth, Dujan was working as a junior helmsman. The captain offered him a choice, leave and apply to the Academy or remain on the transport’s crew.

Career

Within six months of accepting the offer of a job on the passenger transport, Dujan was promoted to senior helmsman. When off duty he would spend his time studying in preparation for exams that would give him formal qualifications prior to applying to Starfleet Academy. Dujan enjoyed his time on the Good Hope and by the time he left for the Academy, he was serving as her Chief Helmsman.

After passing the Academy Entrance Exam, Dujan began classes in the fall of 2386. Life on Earth was much different to life on Farius. He no longer had to look over his shoulder, he stopped wondering when his luck would run out. His work on the Good Hope gave him a boost in his studies. While he scored well in engineering classes, it was in flight training that he excelled thanks to the three years he spent at the helm of the Good Hope. After four years of studying, and a cadet cruise on the U.S.S. Hood, Dujan graduated from the Academy and was commissioned an Ensign.

Dujan couldn’t believe his luck when his orders arrived after graduation. He’d been assigned to the U.S.S. Challenger as a flight controller. It was exceedingly rare for an Ensign fresh out of the Academy to be assigned to a Galaxy-class starship. Dujan would serve aboard the Challenger for the next six years and loved every minute of it. He was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in 2392 with a promotion to Assistant Chief Flight Controller coming in 2394.

Following promotion to full Lieutenant in 2396, Dujan transferred to the U.S.S. Galaxy shortly after Henry as her new Assistant Chief Flight Controller. Within months he’d been promoted to Chief Flight Controller. Serving on the Galaxy was the peak of his career to date and he relished the challenge that flying the oldest of the Galaxy-class starships provided him while his responsibilities expanded to include managing the entire flight operations department.

In late 2399, Dujan was surprised to receive new orders from Starfleet Command. He was to report aboard the U.S.S. Aquarius, a Resolute-class heavy cruiser, as her new Chief Flight Controller.

Personal Life

As a result of his childhood experiences, Dujan was always reserved and withdrawn; happier spending time on his own with a good book or drawing something. Even on the S.S. Good Hope, he maintained a distance from the crew because he spent much of his off duty hours studying. It was only due to the efforts of his Academy roommate, Edward Jones, that Dujan was drawn out of his shell and made a few friends. Despite this, he still has difficulty making  new ones and tends to maintain a small circle of friends.

During his time at the Academy, a fellow cadet named Henry Young was on the fringes of Dujan’s social circle. They encountered each other at parties and chatted a few times but didn’t get to know each other better. Dujan met Henry again in 2393 when the latter was assigned to the Challenger. Their shared friends at the Academy allowed the two to bond quickly and their friendship developed into a romantic relationship by the end of 2393.

When Henry was transferred to the U.S.S. Galaxy, Dujan followed soon after and within a few months the couple were engaged. They married just over a year later on Henry’s homeworld, Marcos XII, and then spent their honeymoon on Casperia Prime.
