Summary
Proudly leading the team who are tasked with looking after Elysion’s crew from a victualling, stewarding, and supply perspective, Chief Steward Orville Carrington is always the consummate professional, being ready, willing, and able to ensure that the officers, crew, and visitors of USS Elysion receive the service they require at any hour of the day or night.
From managing the day-to-day operations of Elysion’s all-hands lounge ‘Forward on Seven’, two smaller crew lounges, the mess hall, and the chief petty officers’ wardroom to personally serving the commanding officer and their guests in the Captain’s Dining Room, to ensuring diplomatic banquets and functions go off without a hitch, Carrington leads his team with a rod of iron and a set of incredibly high professional standards.
History
Born in Northampton, England in late 2361, Orville Wilbur Carrington never seriously considered any career other than service, following the well-worn path laid down for him by generations of Carringtons who had gone before him.
In his rare off-duty moments, Carrington has been known to regale companions with stories of his earliest ancestor to enter service, a man who eventually became private butler to King William V of Great Britain, over 300 years earlier. It isn’t known if these stories are in fact true, but Carrington speaks warmly about his ancestor’s dedication to duty and how his family history has inspired him to always strive for perfection both professionally and personally.
A mediocre student, Carrington showed a strong interest in history whilst at school – no doubt influenced by family stories of the past – and on completion of his studies, decamped southwards to London where he entered the employ of a minor member of British nobility as a junior footman.
Over the next ten years, Carrington learned all he could from colleagues, peers, and senior household staff, honing his skills and abilities to perfection and rising through the ranks to become valet, under-butler, and finally butler.
In 2387, Carrington’s elderly employer passed away, and having no direct heirs, the old man’s estate passed to distant relatives who had no desire or intent to maintain a large household. The household and staff were dissolved and feeling rudderless, Carrington spent several months drifting until a chance encounter with a Starfleet recruiter introduced him to the possibilities of a career aboard a starship, and with no small degree of trepidation, he entered Starfleet’s Operations Branch School as an enlisted recruit.
After completing his training, Carrington spent the next several years integrating the knowledge gained in his former career with the structure of his new life, successfully specialising as a steward and moving through the ratings before eventually being promoted to chief petty officer in 2398 and being assigned as Chief Steward aboard Elysion.
Orville Carrington is a strict taskmaster, refusing to accept anything but an individual’s best in any situation – and if their best isn’t good enough, then that individual might just be better suited transferring to a different assignment…
Taking particular pride in having responsibility for the captain’s private dining room, Carrington personally serves Elysion’s commanding officer and any invited guests whenever possible.
However, it is the part of his role which involves ensuring that the all-hands lounge “Forward on Seven” operates smoothly and efficiently for the crew, and seeing those who he regards as his charges relaxing and enjoying themselves, which Carrington takes most pleasure in – although he would fervently deny that should anyone ever dare suggest as much to his face.
