Summary
John Carter is a laid back man. He enjoys having s good conversation with others, some whiskey every now and then and gazing at the stars, believing that they have so much more to do in their galaxy. He dislikes those who try to cheat and lie to him. He won’t tolerate insubordination and he will not give up his job easily, no matter how many times he has been offered a higher position. He is currently the Captain of the USS Centaur, and has been with the ship for over nearly thirty years.
History
John Carter was born on June 12th, 2348, in Dallas, Texas. He has four brothers and two sisters. Nothing too exciting happened in his young years, aside from being a family of farmers who did their best to keep up with tradition, growing organic foods and the like. He, among his siblings, had helped his parents for years out on the farm, least until one by one, became of age and either remained on the farm or joined Starfleet. John was one of the few children in his family that joined Starfleet. His acadeny years were also not as fruitful, he simply attended his classes on time, fooled around here an there like a class clown but he completed his assignments and passed his exams. He was no where near the top of his classes but his command rating was pretty high and he was hand picked by a certain Captain of the USS Centaur.
That is right. John Carter’s first assignment as an Ensign was on board the USS Centaur in 2370. The reason for being was that the Captain saw potential in Carter and wanted to mentor him for the Second Officer position. But Carter had ways to go, so he was assigned as a Flight Control Officer. One other superior of his that also saw potential, who of course agreed with the Captain was First Officer Commander Reynolds. Over the time of his serving on board the Centaur, achieving the position of Assistant Chief Flight Control along with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade, they had flown dozens of science and exploration missions. Launching probes, gathering data and reporting back to Starfleet Command or to a more equipped science vessel. That was also when the Captain accepted the offered Admiral position and left the ship, leaving Reynolds in charge with his promotion to Captain.
But then near the end of 2373, the Dominion War began. Carter ended up being the Chief Flight Control Officer with the rank of Lieutenant. For the duration of the Dominion War, they had skirmishes with the Jem’Hadar a few times. Carter flew the Centaur during which they chased a Jem’Hadar Attack ship back into Dominion space, only to later find out what that ship really was. And during the battle of retaking Deep Space Nine, the ship took a heavy hit that unfortunately took the life of their Second Officer. This became Carter’s opportunity to rise in position and in rank, but that was saved after the battle was over, since the Captain and First Officer were still very much alive.
Thus, in 2376, Carter was promoted to Lieutenant Commander, and was given the Second Officer position, while Captain Reynolds mentored Carter to become the new Captain. Reason for being was, they knew the First Officer won’t be around much longer, that a command position will be offered and he will take it and Carter will be elevated up to First Officer with the rank of Commander. Which is exactly what happened in 2378, the First Officer accepted the command offer he was given and Carter was promoted. But Carter’s claim to the Captain’s chair did not come until 2390, where Captain Reynolds retired (or accepted an admiralty position.), at which point there was no other choice but to promote Carter to Captain and the new Commanding Officer of the USS Centaur.
Over the next several years, the Centaur continued to do the missions that they used to do. They would scout ahead, deploy probes for exploration or scientific means and on occasion they would take border patrol runs as well. Borders that they have patrolled a few times were the Fed-Card border and the Fed-Rom border, especially around the Romulan Free States and the Romulan Star Empire, as relations with the Romulan Republic was far better than the other two.
Now, Captain Carter wishes to do exactly what his first Captain did. He does not know for how long he would remain in command of the USS Centaur. Whether it be he retires, finally caves into the offering of an Admiralty position, or Starfleet retires the class vessel all together. Either way, he had been paying close attention to Academy graduates and the one that got his eye was the Romulan named Vakai. He saw the potential in him that his first Captain had seen in Carter. So while the USS Centaur remained on border patrol while the Fourth Fleet dealt with the Hunters of D’Ghor, Carter kept an eye on Vakai and his colleagues. After seeing how well they worked together, and the fact that Vakai had put in a request for four of the Non-Commissioned Officers to go through the quick, rough and extensive training to become Commissioned Officers, Carter knew that Vakai had planned to keep his first team together when ever he gets the chance to command. Thus, Carter made arrangements for Vakai’s former team to end up assigned to the Centaur, where Carter will not only keep a close eye on them, but also mentor Vakai into a fine Commanding Officer. But Carter will have to determine if he is fit for it, after all, Command is not entirely easy, as a lot of responsibility came with it, so this would give Carter a chance to see if Vakai could handle it.
The USS Centaur will remain doing border patrols, mainly along the Federation-Romulan border. They will aid anyone who requests it and defend the innocent and the vulnerable from those who prey on them.
