Captain Tyler McQueen is the current commanding officer of the USS Carlsbad. He was formerly executive officer of the USS Rotterdam & acting CO on Starbase 642. He is a human male raised by two ambitious and talented Starfleet officers that imparted their values to him. This was both a gift and a curse for Tyler, as having had such prestigious parents gave him a sense of destiny that drives him to be greater than them.

Tyler’s service jacket has received multiple commendations and performance evaluations by former commanders, citing his exemplary performance in his duties. Most notably, he has received praise for his ability to remain calm and give direction in emergency situations. However, he has also been known to make decisions that self-sabotage his own career advancement.

Ty is a human male of average height and athletic build. He has jet-black hair and blue eyes, a bronze-tanned complexion, and a permanent five o’clock shadow.

He wears a standard 2400s Starfleet duty uniform with wrap-front tunic over a dark charcoal-coloured turtleneck undershirt. Four silver rank pips are positioned on the left side of the collar. The tunic itself is mostly black, with his departmental colour running across the shoulders, upper torso, and back, with a thin strip of piping along the tunic’s parting edge down the front. His uniform becomes complete with a standard Starfleet commbadge, black slacks, and polished black boots.

In matters of personal success, be they career or social, Ty has proven to be a bit rash. He has a habit of making decisions before fully weighing the outcome, either hoping things will work out as he intended or being overconfident that he can deal with the fallout in case they do not.

This behavior is not reflected in his duties, however, as Ty is disciplined, careful and deliberate in his thinking. He never gambles with the mission or lives.

Tyler is a kind, compassionate person with strengths in diplomacy and political science. He is often playful with others and is not one to hide his emotions with those he trusts. He clearly shows that he values those he leads, never asking them to make a sacrifice he would not be willing to make himself.

Tyler McQueen was born aboard the USS Fiji while it was under the command of his father, Thorson McQueen. There, his mother, Arianna, was the ship’s Chief Medical Officer. Three years later, upon returning from its deep-space assignment, his father had planned to relinquish command of the Fiji and resign his commission, Thorson had grown guilty about having had a relationship with a member of his staff, this was something he had warned many other officers against throughout his command career. Starfleet, however, had already been considering Thorson for promotion and when they presented it to him, he felt he could offset his impropriety by fulfilling his duties in the Admiralty as penance.

Tyler has only ever known his dad as an admiral, one who weighed his responsibilities to family and duty equally and never sacrificed one unfairly over the other. Growing up under the shadow of a flag officer gave Ty a strong sense of what a successful Starfleet career should look like, something that would later shape both his ambition and his expectations of his own career.

Arianna decided to leave Starfleet not long afterward. Her goal since she was little was to become a doctor, and after she succeeded, she eventually felt the pull to leave anyway. Her relationship with Thorson and the birth of Ty had really only solidified a desire that was already there, and she chose the next challenge of being a homemaker.

Being their only child, Ty didn’t want for much. Arianna, while still officially retired from Starfleet, continued to work at Starfleet Medical from time to time, taking on locum work here and there. During these times, Ty would stay with his maternal grandparents in Buenos Aires, Argentina. There, he would learn about his Spanish roots and family history dating back to the 15th century. He loved hearing about all kinds of history from his grandfather.

Ty went to school and had a normal upbringing while balancing classes, puberty, and social life until he finally graduated in 2381. A year later, in 2382, he enrolled in the Academy.

The Academy was a great experience for him and he found many friends. Too often he spent more time with them than on his studies, but he managed to balance just enough to progress without any major hurdles besides those he made for himself by making the wrong decisions.

Upon graduating, he served aboard the following ships at the designated stations:

| 2382–2386 | Starfleet Academy | Cadet |
| 2386–2389 | U.S.S. Oasis | Ensign – Lieutenant JG: Flight Control / Junior Bridge Officer |
| 2389–2393 | U.S.S. Whiterun | Lieutenant JG – Lieutenant: Strategic Operations Officer |
| 2393–2398 | U.S.S. Horatio | Lieutenant – Lieutenant Commander: Chief Tactical & Security Officer / Second Officer |
| 2398–2401 | U.S.S. Rotterdam | Lieutenant Commander Commander: Executive Officer |
| 2401–2403 | Starbase 642 | Commander: Acting Commanding Officer |
| 2403–Present | U.S.S. Carlsbad | Captain: Commanding Officer |

While serving aboard the Rotterdam, Ty was given two opportunities for a command of his own. One was a science vessel, the USS Ankh, which was a Nova-class that Ty felt was not worthy of his abilities, and so he declined. Then came a further offer two years later, this time for the Rotterdam. While she was a more capable Rhode Island class vessel, Ty had it in his head that his first ship would be fresh out of the shipyards, not someone else’s former command.

This decision would prove to be more costly than his first refusal, as the captain of the Rotterdam was seeking to retire soon and believed he was training Ty to be his replacement. When Ty refused, his captain ordered his transfer back to Command, which then assigned him to Starbase 642 as acting executive officer while it searched for a new billet. He had loyally held that position though secretly resented it, much more preferring to be on a moving vessel.

Tyler felt betrayed by his last CO for ordering his immediate transfer once he refused to succeed him. But it was the captain of the Rotterdam who had submitted the glowing recommendation for Ty to Starfleet Command.

However, this recommendation alone was not enough to move Command to offer him a ship anytime soon. No, it was the events a few months before Frontier Day that would make him much more interesting to them.

Commodore Solis, SB 642’s commanding officer, had to take leave for personal “Vulcan” reasons after he became unreasonably aggressive. This left Ty in charge indefinitely until the Commodore could return in good health.

During his time as Acting Commanding Officer, Ty was approached by a member of the station’s Engineering Corps about a discrepancy between the station’s common-species biological reference data and the proposed update from Starfleet’s Corps of Engineers. The two datasets did not match. This was only flagged because of SB 642’s close proximity to the long-standing ion storm known as Hades. The storm would occasionally cause subspace interference, which had forced the station to incorporate checks and balances along with custom-tuned calibrations for the transporter system. The system needed to be retuned for any new patches.

The engineer expressed concern that not only their species’ dataset but also many other entries were larger than normal. The engineer felt it could be from the ion storm somehow.

Ty took the concern seriously and ordered the system kept at the previous patch. He submitted a request to Starfleet Command for a copy of the patch to be delivered via ship to prevent Hades from corrupting the data again. In response, Command dismissed their concerns, said the patch was already made compatible with their systems and ordered Ty to apply it.

Ty argued, but Command would not budge. Deciding lives were more important than his career, Ty acknowledged the order and informed Command that the update had been applied as instructed, even though he had countermanded the order, telling his own staff not to apply it.

After the events of Frontier Day, an event that SB 642 was not directly impacted by, Starfleet Command received a request for a court-martial from Ty himself. He admitted to misleading Command about having applied the patch and requested that his station staff not be held accountable for following his orders.

This presented a problem for Command, as proceeding with a court-martial for an offense that essentially saved their facility would not look good. And so, between his actions around Frontier Day and his recommendation by a former CO, they offered him a command of his own: the USS Carlsbad, a California-class vessel. But Ty didn’t care anymore. He accepted the command.
