Full Name

Robyn Diana Fern

Unknown

A highly experienced counsellor and mental health advocate, Robyn Fern is currently serving aboard the USS Encinitas, her first starship posting. She is very much committed to her role but is flexible and is willing to get her hands dirty should a situation require it.

At 1.7 metres, Robyn is someone who can easily get lost in a crowd with a slim build, brown eyes and typically brown hair. She prefers to be out of uniform as much as she can, and changing out of her duty uniform is the first thing she does when coming off shift.

On meeting Robyn, almost everyone assumes she has Romulan heritage, owing to her relaxed and more emotional nature than you would find in someone with Vulcan heritage. To an outsider she seems eccentric, but this is her expressing her emotions charismatically. She prides herself on being approachable, especially to new crew members whom she makes it her business to meet within a couple of weeks of boarding. However, her counselling style is a calmer affair, allowing a more regimented side of her to bleed into her sessions, moving through points with compassion.

Early Life

Born in July 2375, Robyn had a very difficult start to her early life. At birth, she was seemingly abandoned at a fire exit of the Westmead Hospital in Sydney. At around three weeks old, she was fostered and later adopted by the medical student who discovered her. After only two years living in Sydney, Robyn and her mother moved to the remote city of Broken Hill in New South Wales. Here, she excelled in her early education and graduated from primary school at only nine years old. However, during her pre-teen years in secondary school she increasingly struggled with emotions, finding it difficult to keep them in check or, at times, at all. With this, her mother very much wanted her to explore her Vulcan half and arranged for her to learn Vulcan meditation techniques, this however did not last long, and she instead attended counselling sessions on her own insistence.

With continued counselling to help her understand and control her strong emotions, she again managed to graduate from secondary school three years early at fifteen. During the intermission between her postgraduate studies, she did do some exploring of her Vulcan heritage at the insistence of her mother.

Later education and early career

Robyn began her studies at Macquarie University in Sydney in 2390, during this time, she completed dual majors in psychology and nursing. She found the dual majors incredibly challenging, coming as a shock to her after excelling in her earlier education and, as such, almost eliminating her social life. After graduating in 2394, a year after she had planned, she started working life in the Broken Hill Hospital as a nurse initially before specialising as a mental health nurse. In 2397, she completed counselling qualifications to allow her to work more independently. In late 2397, Robyn had a brief relationship with a Starfleet officer. Although it ended very poorly, moving away from it she found herself attracted to Starfleet, its philosophy and for the first true time in her life, wanting to learn more about herself.

Starfleet Academy – Officer Candidate School

In 2398, following discussions with recruitment specialists, she attended the San Francisco campus in the Officer Candidate School, given her already lengthy list of professional qualifications. At the academy, she quickly fell right into place even though she was one of the youngest in every class she took in OCS. Also, while at the academy, she met another half-human, half-Vulcan, and that experience was eye-opening for her, as she saw herself for the first time in someone else. She graduated as a lieutenant junior grade in 2399, earning the respect of many of her instructors and examiners.

Starbase 73

Robyn was posted to SB73 three weeks after graduating, this was also her first time on a different planetary body. Here, she rapidly developed as a counsellor, helping various individuals, both Starfleet personnel and civilians passing through. Her biggest challenge came in 2401 in the aftermath of Frontier Day and the huge influx of people suffering both physical and emotional harm. For her part in the response, she earned numerous commendations for both counselling and shifts undertaken in the infirmary, harking back to her time as a mental health nurse.

USS Encinitas

Robyn left SB73 in 2402, well respected by her peers, for a new posting as the chief counsellor aboard the Encinitas. She quickly fell into place, aiding the crew early on in a second contact mission, and enjoyed a newfound role in assisting in diplomatic efforts.
