Summary
Chloe is a lover of language, linguistics, and the application thereof thru communication. Fresh out of Starfleet Academy, she has jumped at the chance to join Vallejo’s crew with the promise of visiting many new places with many new languages. Her determination to grow and desire to be seen prove a frequent obstacle, creating friction in her social interactions as she struggles to switch between professional and polite. A lot of the new language tricks she’ll need to learn won’t happen on a far-flung Federation colony world, but right on the ship with the people closest to her.
Appearance
Chloe is in her early twenties, and is a cisgender woman of Caribbean-human descent. She maintains a healthy diet, and fitness routine, weighing 56 kilograms at 162 centimeters in height. Her build is moderately athletic, and she moves with swift determination. Brown hair, brown eyes, and smile to light up a room. She maintains a polished and well kept appearence, even in more casual situations. While she is kind and approachable, Chloe has a habit of slipping into professional mode at the wrong time, which can come acrossed as clinical.
Personality
Chloe is driven, focused, and determined. She loves her studies – language and speech – and all the socializing that goes along with it. She is very competitive, and not afraid to push herself to excel and move ahead. She has ambitions, and a serious plan to see them through to the end. While she is not unkind by any measure, her task-oriented focus can come across sterile and brash. A fault of this serious operating is that she can never see her achievements for how good they are, and is always trying to make sure she is giving her best – or rather, is seen while giving her best. The need to be perceived like this further adds to her difficulty in getting along with her peers, as even in low stakes situations, the officer in her overrides the person.
History
Early Life (2381-2399)
Chloe Cordero was born in El Poblado de Boquerón, the city-center of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico – a small fishing village renowned for its restaurants and foods. She was raised an only child by her father, Ricardo Cordero, Jr., in a small apartment above the restaurant he owned. Her mother, Juliana Cordero, had died during childbirth. During her younger childhood years, Chloe’s favorite activity was reading. As she progressed through her schooling, her love of reading grew and she began to explore books written in different languages. But the time she was 16, she was proficient in 3 more languages – English, Italian, and Portuguese, in addition to her native Spanish. She spent her later teenage years assisting at her father’s restaurant after school. While cooking was never really for her, it did provide a wealth of social interactions with locals and tourists alike which honed her intrapersonal skills.
Starfleet Academy (2399-2403)
Fiercely competitive and dedicated to her schooling, and having graduated top of her high school class, Chloe had no trouble applying and getting accepted to Star fleet Academy. This would be the first time in her life she would be away from home, having never traveled outside Puerto Rico before. But she knew if she was to continue her pursuit of language learning, the best way to do so was to travel. And the best way to travel, was to join Star fleet.
She breezed through her first two years of general education and starship operations, and enrolled herself into the social sciences track. These classes proved to be much more engaging and interesting to her than the earlier generic courses. Up to this point, she had kept up her language learning independent of her studies, and had added Greek to her list of fluences. Her final year, and her favorite, was about picking a specialty. Chloe chose xeno linguistics without a second thought, and began to learn all about the most common alien languages encountered in Star fleet service. These proved to be a much more difficult to absorb and understand than the languages of Earth, and for the first time in her life of schooling, she struggled to keep up. Her independent language studies suffered during this last year, but the extra dedication to her classes paid off and she was able to finally graduate just a tiny bit less and top of her social science peers.
USS Vallejo (2403-Present)
Spending her first month out of academy on Star base Bravo, Chloe made full use of the facilities’s resources to catch up on her Earth language studies that she had to postpone. Shore leave was currently going on, but rather than beaches and sunshine, she was focused on books and research. On one of her trips to the station archives, she had a chance encounter in a corridor with a rather disappointed looking captain. That captain was Maria Dupree, and she had just made the hasty decision to request a starship command rather than finish her career behind a desk. Due to her sudden change of mind, Star fleet could only spare her the USS Vallejo, which was being used as a training vessel for midshipman at Star base Bravo. This also meant she was only afforded a skeleton crew. Captain Dupree’s best options for grabbing extra hands was to recruit fresh graduates on the station looking for their first assignment. And she had just bumped into one.
After discussing the position for a short while, Chloe determined that this ship would not have a standard mission like most others. Instead, it would fulfill its captain’s desires to wander the stars. For most new officers, this would be starting their career by ending it. But for Chloe, the prospect of visiting place after place meant travel, and travel meant opportunities for language learning. It was decided right then and there in that corridor that she would join onto the Vallejo’s roster as it’s communications officer. And since she’d be the only communications officer, her first posting would be right on the bridge. It is unclear where they’ll be going first, as the ship is still scrambling to pick over extra supplies, but where ever it is, Chloe is certain it’ll be the right place for her.
