Summary
Kate Kamigawa is the primary helms officer of the USS Gilroy. Though young, she carries herself with an air of seriousness that has earned her the respect of many of her superiors. During the Gilroy’s experience in the alternative timeline, she demonstrated a ruthless competence that also earned her a minor hero status among the lower decks.
Appearance
Kate is a youthful human of East Asian ancestry with medium length hair – typically tied back in a ponytail. She’s just a smidge taller than 5’8 and keeps relatively fit through running and calisthenics.
She has a slightly prominent nose and is quick to squint or wrinkle her brow in confusion or disapproval.
Personality
Kate Kamigawa is reserved – if not a bit shy – and tends to keep to herself. She prefers solitary activities like reading, running, and surfing. She is not a fan of the holodeck, and only uses it begrudgingly, much preferring real waves, risk, and sun.
For the first few months of her command, Kate remained relatively quiet and preferred to respond quickly to orders with “Yes Sir” and nothing more. Her timid nature and general desire to fly under the radar led her to be considered rather unremarkable – though competent – to the senior officers. However, she stepped up greatly during the Gilroy’s mission to a parallel universe, where she was forced to speak up, and make command suggestions.
She surprised even herself with her comfort being more forward, and has dared herself to keep up the effort.
History
Born on Earth in Honolulu, Kate was raised to value schooling and sports equally by active, loving parents. She took to school naturally, showing herself to be a strong, academically gifted student. While she passionately loved sports of all kinds – especially track and surfing – she struggled to fit into most team dynamics and preferred to partake in them as hobbies.
Kate had the opportunity to first experience piloting aircraft during a school exposure program with Star Fleet. She became instantly obsessed. Over the next few years, Kate took advantage of every opportunity she could find to experience flying. For Kate, much like surfing, flying was less about the thrill of going as fast as possible and more about the serene freedom she felt when riding the wind (or waves).
Knowing that Star Fleet was one of the few ways that she could engage in flying full time, Kate worked hard to excel in every area she could to earn entry into Star Fleet academy. An overall strong candidate, she did score low on teamwork and collaboration. It was only through the strengths of her many letters of recommendation from her various flight teachers that she earned acceptance.
Kate did well at the academy, continuing to be a strong student who kept largely to herself. While she did score in the lower half of her cohort in maintenance and ship design, she excelled at the practical aspects of piloting. Upon graduation, she was immediately assigned to the USS Gilroy.
