Summary
CAPT Richard Pullman is the commanding officer of the California class starship USS Glendale.
A graduate of the Starfleet Academy Engineering program, Pullman started his career in the engineering departments of three starships, eventually reaching the position of chief engineer of USS Richmond. Pullman then transferred to Beta Antares Ship Yards, where he served for 20 years, eventually reaching the Deputy Director position. Following a mishap with the recommissioned starship USS Glendale, Pullman assumed command of that vessel, initially to complete its repairs, but ultimately as her commanding officer for her second tour of duty.
Appearance
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 170 lbs. (slightly overweight)
Hair: Brown with grey streaks
Eyes: Brown
Personality
Pullman is slightly introverted. He is generally slow to react, usually pondering questions before responding, sometimes slipping into a nearly meditative state. His approach to thoroughly think a problem through prior to acting was successful both as a working engineer and as an administrator. Pullman never had ambitions of command, as their requirements for quick, decisive actions was something he could never embrace.
History
Pullman followed a typical and undistinguished Starfleet engineer’s career path. His first assignment was aboard the Galaxy class starship USS Asahi, followed by assignments to the Constitution III Class starship USS Hayes, then the California class starship USS Richmond. In 2380, Pullman took over as chief engineer of Richmond.
In 2383, Pullman’s career trajectory changed when he requested an assignment at the Beta Antares Ship Yards. This transfer was requested to provide more stability in postings to accommodate his wife’s burgeoning career. While only an average fleet engineer, he excelled in the ship yard environment. His attention to detail and ability to juggle multiple projects among multiple ships led to his rapid rise at Beta Antares, eventually leading to the position of Deputy Director of the ship yards.
In 2402, Pullman declined a nomination for the Director of Beta Antares Ship Yards, citing that the position was too political and that he preferred to retain his current, although slight, connection with the front line workers by remaining in the deputy position. The position was filled by Fleet Captain Walter Scott, a person who personified the stereotypical political appointee, who valued appearances and currying favor over sound decisions regarding the facility’s operations.
In 2403, Scott overrode the objections of Pullman and nearly every department head, and approved the launch of the recommissioned California class starship USS Glendale. Glendale‘s immediate break down was a source of embarrassment for the ship yard community. It was determined, though never confirmed, that the director’s decision was influenced by pressure from Glendale‘s newly minted captain, who had aspired to take command of a starship before a rival colleague. The consequences of Scott’s questionable decision affected all senior members at Beta Antares, as they were all either transferred or asked to resign. CAPT Michael Morrison, Starfleet’s ship yards Chief of Staff and Pullman’s close friend, arranged a transfer for Pullman to serve as the commanding officer of Glendale while the ship was repaired at Starbase Bravo instead of requiring Pullman’s immediate resignation.
Due to the Displaced emergency, Glendale was immediately called back into service as soon as Pullman reported aboard. Once again, the ship was launched prior to her being fully ready to serve, this time to transfer displaced personnel to Starbase 80. The political fallout of Pullman’s transfer to Glendale and the senior officers who once again sanctioned the launch of an unready starship led to Pullman remaining the commanding officer of Glendale following the completion of her repairs. Glendale’s second mission following her recommissioning was heading the treaty negotiations with four colonies in the Flaxos sector.
Pullman is married to Dr. Laura Pullman, professor of comparative anthropology at the College of Physical Sciences at the University of Mars.
