Lieutenant Junior Grade Dexter Mulligan is an energetic, boisterous, and passionate xenobiologist. Growing up on a Federation science outpost, Dexter has had extensive hands on experience from an early age, demonstrating a natural aptitude for working with animals and an intuitive understanding of their behaviour. However, as a result of his isolated upbringing, Dex struggles with social cues and personal boundaries. Having only met a handful of people before attending university, he often comes across as overly enthusiastic or unaware in social situations. He Graduated in 2401 with a Master’s degree in xenobiology, specialising in xenozoological studies and planetary ecosystems. In 2402, Dexter transitioned into Starfleet through the Academy Officer Candidate Program.

Dexter and his scaly Allidrax companion, Chopper, are currently stationed assigned to the USS Alhambra

At 177.8 cm tall, Dexter carries a strong, well-earned physique, shaped by his hands on and active approach to work. His uniform, although somewhat serviceable, reflects his single minded focus on his work, with creased fabric, sleeves unevenly set, and layers haphazardly tucked away and overlooked, suggesting a mind more attuned to matters of greater personal interest than presentation. One can imagine that in Dexter’s mind, a uniform purpose should be to serve functionality rather than presentablity.

overview:

Robert is boisterous and energetic with a steadfast can do attitude. Years of isolation on Civata have shaped him into an outgoing and sociable individual, almost as if he’s trying to make up for lost time.
He is also deeply principled and intellectually curious, approaching the world with both enthusiasm and thoughtfulness. He is fiercely protective of his friends and holds a strong reverence for the natural world.

comments:

“Roberts quickly adjusted to social life here at the academy, after reading over his profile we had some initial concerns with his integration with the other students. But he hasn’t displayed any problems or anti-social behaviours, in fact I’d say it’s been quite the opposite. Easily excitable and eager to get to make friends. He’s proving to be quite the social butterfly, signing up for extra circular activities, putting himself out there, trying new things and making new friends… After our last consolation he mentioned trying out baseball with a class mates from his study group. I’m glad to see he’s putting himself out there, really seems like he’s trying to make up for lost time.” – Academy’s Councillor

“Robert performs exceptionally well under pressure and in high-stress environments. He demonstrates quick, responsive problem-solving skills and maintains a calm, focused demeanor when faced with urgent situations. However, he can at times approach complex issues in a somewhat black-and-white manner, which may cause him to overlook certain nuances. Continued growth in appreciating multiple perspectives will further strengthen his already impressive capabilities.” – Exobiology Professor

“Dear mr Hawthorne,

Following up from your previous email, we understand your expressed frustrations    pertaining to our campus policies regarding leashing and harnessing pets. At this point and time we request that you still leash or harness your reptilian companion even at the play pen until further notice. Additionally please restrain from letting said reptile swim in the campuses local ponds and bodies of water. This is a continuing developing situation and we have taken your request onboard but until further notice we request you remain compliant with these policies.

kind regards,

– Mikita Lee from Campus Management.”

Star-date 2373: Family

Dr. Diana and Sam Hawthorne requested a transfer to a remote Federation surveying outpost on Civata, an M-class moon orbiting a gas giant on the outskirts of explored space. The moon, though devoid of intelligent life, teemed with rich and often unpredictable ecosystems, making it an ideal research site for Starfleet’s exobiology initiatives. Dr. Diana, a respected xenozoologist affiliated with the Federation Science Council, devoted her work to studying the planet’s diverse wildlife. Sam Hawthorne, a meticulous and patient botanist, specialised in cataloging and analysing the planet’s vast and unusual plant life. Together, they led a long-term joint survey of the world’s flora and fauna, contributing decades of data to Federation databases.

Star-date 2378: Birth

Life at the outpost was quiet. Robert was raised in isolation with only his parents and the occasional rotating science officers for company. He dedicated his spare time in his youth to exploring the lush bioluminescent forests, thick marshlands, and cavernous mountains of Civata. From a young age, Robert expressed an interest in and appreciation for the local flora and fauna, displaying a keen aptitude with the planet’s wildlife. Like his mother, Robert developed an intense fascination with animal behaviour. By the age of twelve, he was already assisting with tagging operations and habitat studies. His patience and natural empathy with wildlife earned him a reputation among the other scientists on the outpost as someone animals instinctively trusted.

Star-date 2394: Chop

At sixteen, while conducting an independent marshland survey, Robert encountered the violent aftermath of a territorial struggle in the wetlands: a female allidrax lying mortally wounded near her nesting grounds, evidence suggesting a dispute as she attempted to defend her clutch. Despite his inexperience with field intervention, Robert immediately attempted medical assistance, stabilising her as best he could while contacting the outpost for consultation. However, his efforts were too late; the allidrax had sustained catastrophic trauma to the cervical region in her attempt to protect her young. Robert stayed with her as she took her last breath, succumbing to her injuries. After ensuring the surrounding area was secure, Robert assessed the nest. The majority of the eggs had been brutalised in the struggle; all but one remained. Cracks formed along the outskirts of the shell, yet it still registered faint but viable bio-signs on his triquater. Recognising the narrow window for survival, Robert carefully clasped the egg and ran it back to the outpost. With his mother’s assistance, he placed the egg into a gestation pod, stabilising the temperature and biometric environment to mimic its native marsh conditions. Robert monitored the embryo’s development with unwavering devotion, adjusting environmental conditions and reinforcing the compromised shell with a replicated sealant. Seven weeks later, the hatchling successfully emerged. The juvenile allidrax’s vitals appeared healthy. It immediately imprinted on Robert, and from that moment forward, their bond became inseparable—an event that would profoundly shape Robert’s future, solidifying his professional trajectory in xenozoology.

Star-date 2398: A New Chapter

Despite his love for the outpost, Robert began to feel the pull of the broader galaxy. At the age of twenty, he made the difficult decision to leave his parents behind and join the Federation Academy. He enrolled to pursue higher studies in xenozoology, with minors in botany and exobiology. Robert’s long-term goal is to serve in Starfleet’s Science Division, specializing in first-contact ecological assessments of newly discovered worlds. He believes that understanding an ecosystem is often the first step toward understanding a civilisation or planet.
