Summary

Lieutenant Junior Grade Rafael C. Serrano, Starfleet serves as the Flight Control Officer aboard the Norway-class light cruiser USS Montrose (NCC-68817), where his natural talent, instinctive flying, and fearless approach to risk make him one of the most dynamic junior officers within Border Operations Fourth Fleet. He is the kind of flier who turns a starship into an extension of himself, and that instinct has pulled starships through situations some captains would have written off as hopeless.

Brash, bold, and unashamedly confident, Serrano is as infuriating as he is indispensable — and Hudson wouldn’t trade him for anyone else.

Appearance

Serrano stands at 5’11”, lean and wiry, with a build shaped more by reflex training than brute strength. His black hair, usually swept back in a controlled mess, and his dark, brown eyes lend him a perpetually restless look A lopsided grin is his default expression, and he’s rarely seen without it, even on the bridge.

Personality

Serrano lives on the edge. He is bold, cocky, and often insufferably sure of himself. But Serrano’s swagger isn’t empty bravado, however. Beneath the irreverence lies a sharp tactical mind and a deep, almost instinctive understanding of starship flight dynamics.

History

Born in Barcelona, Earth, Rafael Serrano grew up in a family of shuttle pilots and atmospheric racers. By the time he was twelve, he was flying cargo haulers through Catalonia’s tight canyon runs; by sixteen, he was competing, and winning, in civilian flight competitions across the Federation.

Serrano graduated near the top of his class in helm and navigation at Starfleet Academy, though his instructors often noted his “casual disregard for conservative flight doctrine.” He ignored the criticism and doubled down on instinctive flying, earning his first billet aboard the USS Perseus, assigned to an extended patrol mission along the Federation’s border with the Tzenkethi.

Later assigned to the USS Makassar, Serrano distinguished himself during a crisis in the Idris Expanse, where his split-second piloting allowed the ship to thread a collapsing subspace filament and rescue a trapped science team.

When Hudson assumed command of the Montrose, he specifically requested Serrano.
