Personality
Reid “Red Shirt” Shurt grew up on Terra Nova. Life was about as boring as it came. When he graduated from high school, he was faced with a few choices. He could stay on Terra Nova and get a job or he could enlist in Starfleet and seek adventure. He was ready to step out and see what the universe had in store for him.
Reid is not a strategy guy. You give him a job and he gets it done, no more, no less. His drive isn’t for praise or promotion. It is solely to complete the mission. If you give him clear objectives and directives, he performs excellently. If the mission is ambiguous, it’s not a good fit for him.
As a non-commissioned officer, he leads the same way that way that he serves. He gives them clear objectives and directives and expects the same level of performance that he strives to maintain himself.
History
Reid “Red Shirt” Shurt grew up on Terra Nova. His childhood was average and uneventful. Nothing ever happened on or near Terra Nova, at least nothing that any of the adults talked about. There were a few scares during the Dominion War, but he was young when it was going on and didn’t have any feelings that they were in any real danger.
Reid was athletic, not academic. His major successes were on the wrestling mat. He was not college (or Academy) material. He enlisted in Starfleet when he graduated from high school.
His first assignment out of security training was to Starbase 86. He was immediately nicknamed “Red Shirt.” Thereafter anytime there was a need for a volunteer for a dangerous or distasteful assignment, his chief volunteered the “Red Shirt”. He always performed to the best of his ability and somehow managed to survive.
He was promoted to Petty Officer and assigned to the USS Tomcat shortly before Jonas Flanigan took command.
