Summary
Thomas Maynard currently serves as the Chief Engineering Officer abord the USS Hikaru Sulu.
A highly experienced officer, Tom has years of experience both as a Starship Engineer and as a member of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers – seeing service as a Spacedock Naval Architect (specializing in Spaceframe & Hull design), as part of Second and Third Contact teams and as part of Humanitarian aid projects in Civil Construction.
Diligent, Logical and Pragmatic, Tom is greatly admired by the engineers that serve under him and strongly believes in establishing a collegiate working – environment, appreciating that todays Engineering Apprentices will one day become tomorrow’s Chief Engineers.
Appearance
In his Mid 40’s, Tom Maynard stands 6ft 1ins tall and has a thoughtful, careworn face frames by brown hair that is beginning to show some greying.
Whilst his uniform is always well turned out at the commencement of the shift, the CENG is a hands on leader and is the first to get his hands (and uniform) dirty – crawling through Jefferies Tubes, poking around through maintenance hatches and laboring over fabrication replicators.
Personality
Tom is serious – minded when it comes to Engineering, but is even tempered and never seems to outwardly show frustration. He has a wry sense of humor that he tends to use to mask outright criticism and is a patient and genuine supporter of those junior officers under his charge – always willing to do what he can to expand thier knowledge of engineering theory and practice.
As leader of one of the largest departments/crew compliments onboard the USS Hikaru Sulu, by necessity Tom is an excellent administrator and is constantly balancing his time and priorities.
Tom is good company socially and seems to have a ready supply of amusing and unlikely anecdotes and stories from his years as an Engineer. He is an easy and confident raconteur.
Tom’s passions include sailing, a pastime that he rarely gets to enjoy in the flesh, so has to make do with Holodeck simulations. He is also a keen woodworker and is currently working on a long – term project to hand – build a wooden vessel from scratch, on the Holodeck (when time permits).
History
Born in Burlington, Vermont in 2357, Thomas Maynard was born to parents that both served in Starfleet and both as Starfleet Engineers, so there was a pleasing symmetry when Tom elected to tread it his parents footsteps and carry on the proud family tradition of service to the United Federation of Planets.
Entering Starfleet Academy on 2373, Tom was accepted into the Engineering Division Training Faculty and progressed diligently and well during his years as a Cadet – showing a particularly intuitive grasp of Applied materials – sciences and Structural design.
Graduating on 2377, as a fresh – faced young Ensign, Tom was assigned as a Junior Engineer aboard the Olympic–class Medical cruiser, USS Cushing and his first exposure to active duty saw Tom support the Humanitarian and Disaster – relief operations urgently needed throughout the region of the former Demilitarized Zone, in the aftermath of the costly Dominion War.
Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant (Jg), Tom was next assigned shipboard duty aboard the California-class Utility Cruiser, USS Encinitas – based out of Starbase 72 and spent the next 4 years busying himself in fleet support duties aboard this busy workhorse – learning much during his time aboard.
Initially assigned to the Utopia Planitia Shipyards in 2384, Tom managed to survive the destruction of that facility when he was away attending an Engineering symposium. With production shifting to the Beta Antares Shipyards, in 2385 Tom joined the ASDB research team that would go on to develop the design for the new Inquiry-class Exploratory Cruiser – working on the Block I design as a member of the Spaceframe design team.
Tom went back to space aboard the NX – 89880, USS Inquiry – serving as the Chief Engineer aboard the 1st ship in the class and performing field evaluations and returning data to the ASDB to assist with the refinement of the Block II Prototypes. In 2396, he returned to his role as Leader of the Spaceframes & Hull Design team, to oversee the final design and development of the years of his work – into the Block III Inquiry- class vessels, commencing with the production of the USS Zheng He.
With the loss of so many promising young engineers during the Borg attack during Frontier Day, Tom felt compelled to return to shipboard duty – to assist Starfleet in retaining and rebuilding that base of knowledge. In 2401, Commander Thomas Maynard accepted an invitation from Captain Shavda to join the crew of the USS Hikaru Sulu.
