“When diplomacy fails, I don’t.”- Captain R.A. Wellborn, Starfleet

Formerly the commanding officer of the USS Chimera (NCC-87502), a Manticore-class heavy escort, Captain Richard “Dick”  A. Wellborn, Starfleet was relieved of command on 28 December 2401 following the events of the Raeya Incident. His removal resulted from internal Starfleet deliberations and classified operational fallout, not disciplinary action, and remains controversial among those who served under him.

Rather than sideline him, Starfleet eventually reassigned Wellborn to a critical frontier posting as Strategic Operations Liaison for the Kzinti Sector, recognizing his hard-earned insight, forceful leadership, and battlefield instincts. Based aboard Deep Space 11, he now oversees irregular security matters, detached tactical assets, and cross-border threat intelligence, operating with wide latitude under MacLeod’s authority — but distinctly not under Captain Tancredi’s staff, a fact that continues to irritate the Chief of Staff.

Wellborn is a battlefield bulldog and a strategic maverick known for his combative charm, sharp tactical mind, and devil-may-care attitude. He inspires fierce loyalty among those who can keep up with him, and equally intense resentment among those who cannot.

Captain Wellborn has a larger-than-life presence and thrives amid high-stakes tension. His leadership style is bold, magnetic, and often unpredictable—melding tactical brilliance with a flair for the dramatic.

Known for his irreverent wit and unshakable confidence, Wellborn rallies his crew even in dire situations, projecting calm through chaos. Though his combative nature and frequent disregard for protocol raise eyebrows among superiors, his loyalty to his crew and steadfast commitment to Starfleet’s mission are beyond question.
