As I approach two years in the role of Academy Commandant, David and I have spent some time reflecting on the purpose of Bravo Fleet Academy. These musings have been codified into an Academy Policy that lays the foundation for the next couple of years of Academy offerings.
About those offerings: As Vince has shared, we’re getting closer and closer to launching the Task Unit Leadership Program to support in the training and development of Task Force and Task Group staff. After that, we’ll re-double our efforts on developing the Collaborative Writing Program.
At a glance, the Academy Policy:
- Defines the role of the Academy Team, supporting the delivery of programs and the stewardship of the Starbase Bravo sandbox.
- Defines the scope of the instructional programs we offer through the Academy.
- Describes what members can expect from the Academy program experience.
- Sets expectations for what the Academy expects of its participating members. The creation and instruction of Academy programs requires great time and energy from the Academy Staff, as well as other Department Heads. Since participation in the Academy is purely voluntary, we’ve defined the good citizenship we expect from participating members who sign up to the Academy for learning experiences.

Recruitment Drive
The Academy staff is always looking for new staff assistants who are deeply invested in developing inquiring minds. Ideally, we’re looking for staff members who have experience in Moodle or other learning management systems, along with a solid understanding of the principles, or experience of, adult learning and instructional design.
For those without instructional design experience, we’re looking for effective communicators who have a demonstrated passion for mentoring and guiding eager learners. To be seriously considered, we look for signs of leadership in your Bravo Fleet activity. Remember that it can be a vulnerable experience for our participating members to try out a new skill in Academy assignments. Creating a safe and courageous environment for them will always come first. Grading also requires attention to detail, offering feedback requires fierce kindness, and creating storytelling scenarios requires a different lens on creativity than writing your own stories.
We don’t require all of these experiences, but we are looking for well-rounded experience that may include:
- Being generous with writting comments in Stories and the Discord #writing channel both during and inbetwen Fleet Actions. Demonstrating clarity, specificity of feedback in Competition Standard comments, and writing comments in an empathetic way.
- Showing up as a leader in RPGs or sandboxes. This means not only writing frequently, but proactively creating subplots that last over multiple Stories and include multiple members.
- Completing all Academy badges with attention to detail and courageous creativity to honestly try out new skills.
- Demonstrated understanding of a wide range of Bravo Fleet activities through Task Force / Task Group leadership.
