Summary
A quiet and unassuming woman, easily lost in the crowd, Gillian finds herself more at home amongst the relics of history and the tales of adventure than out on the frontier of Federation space. At the age of 6 her father, a life-long Utopia Planitia foreman, brought her home a small green semi-transparent sleeve of plastic, unimpressed by the seemingly uninteresting gift she almost threw it away until her fathers rugged hands pointed to a small inscription at the top; ‘U.S.S Voyager’. That night, listening to the tales of Janeway and her crew, Gillian found her love of histories and legends. Almost 30 years later she now acts as lorekeeper for these passing titans, shepearding each vessel that comes through their dockyard at the end of their lifetimes. Honouring their service, their sacrifice and their victories as they pass into legend; smuggling tiny pieces of history before they are whisked away. Each night she sits awake in her small quarters, listening to the legends of Starfleet’s history as she curates her ever-growing museum of memorabilia.
Appearance
Perhaps unfairly called short and stocky, Gail is a cannonball of a woman who barrells through the corridors of the shipyard with a wide, brown eyed, grin and a secret candy for everyone she accidently knocks into. Her bun of barely contained brown hair is often arrayed in an unruly halo around her head, wrestled into place with an ornate clip from her expansive collection whilst around her wrists jangle various metal sigils of forgotten mystics of a dozen storied worlds. Her ever present satchel slung over her shoulder (which clanks and bangs with rescued relics) accentuates her lop-sided shoulders as her short form shuffles along the decks and squeezes between the bulkheads.
Personality
More at home amongst the stories of the past heroes and adventurers Gail can seem to be unsocial and bookish, in truth she is a kind and friendly soul who is always ready with a secret treat from her nearby satchel. As a newly minted engineer she had had been serving at Utopia Planitia for several months when the synth attack came and although she made it to one of the bases’ escape vessels many of her friends and colleagues did not. Eversince she has been reluctant to forge any deep friendship, preferring to spend her time attempting to ensure that no moment of Starfleet’s history is lost, especially those of her fallen friends.
History
The stories of Starfleet’s finest filled Gail’s waking hours as a child, when not at school or rushing to finish her chores she would be absorbing facts about the heroes and histories of the Federation’s champions. In the rare moments her father returned to Earth from Mars orbit she would sit on the bench in his shed workshop amongst the terraced houses of Sheffield, listening to his tales of lesser known explorers and adventurous little starships; it never mattered to her that the names weren’t right or the stories slightly modified for innocent ears. Each story she heard fueled a flame in her, not to go out into the stars and join them but to keep the lighthouse lamp lit for their return home.
When the time came to choose her career as she finished high-school, Starfleet Academy and the Corps of Engineers was the only option on her list.
For a decade she served across the quadrant, including spending time at Utopia Planitia; where after the Synth incident left the yards shattered, she lead several teams in the process of decomissioning and redistributing the irreparable remains of many vessels and orbital bases. She earned a reputation acorss the base for her reverent and compassionate treatment of the survivors and the victims (both organic and mechanial) of the attack that continue their rest in orbit.
In 2392 as the fleet yards at Utopia Planitia were beginning to return to normal operations Gail found herself called away to another star and joined the 40 Eridani Fleet Yards above Vulcan as they returned to their origional duties following an accelerated service as the main fleetyards of the Federation’s home fleets. Here she found welcome in the quiet cloisters of Vulcan where she could spend her time studying the history of the Federation and their idiosyncratic ship designs over several centuries, whilst she continued her reverant care of passing titans in orbit.
When Starfleet began rolling out a major overhaul programme based out of the Avalon Fleet Yards, Gail found herself called to join the sprawling network of stations to continue her funerary duties as the legacy filled vessels of the golden age of exploration were finally being laid to rest. Now, her and her team of ‘Breakers’ serve as attendants and scribes for the legends of these vessels, now matter how small.
