History
John Michael Alexander was born on July 14, 2368 in Wisconsin, Earth to a father who was a Starfleet captain and a mother who was a high school teacher. Because of this arrangement, John rarely saw his father, especially when the Dominion War began in 2373. His world was turned upside down, when a year later, his father was killed in action during battle. He and his mother left Wisconsin and settled down with his grandparents in California. In 2378, his mother met an aspiring musician named James Ortiz. In 2381, the two married and moved to San Francisco to begin a new family.
During his school years, John lived with the burden of losing his father to a war he did not understand and rarely heard about. He turned his frustration, loneliness, and resentment towards his academic and athletic pursuits. He rarely sought to make new friends, even after moving to San Francisco. For a time, he resented his mother and her new husband because John felt she had betrayed his father’s memory. During his high school years, he excelled at track and field and graduated top of his class but yet did not have many friends. As he grew closer to graduating high school, he became more obsessed with his father’s history in Starfleet and the war that had left young John fatherless. With a desire to follow in his father’s footsteps, he applied for Starfleet Academy and was subsequently accepted as a member of the class of 2390.
His freshman year in at the academy was his toughest and most life changing. In danger of failing out during his first year, he quickly learned that he could not make it through life alone. He also quickly learned that it was not doing him any good to continue tormenting himself over his father’s death. With help, he was able to change his thinking and quickly made changes to his attitudes. By the end of his freshman year, John had become the valued member of a close circle of friends. His grades improved significantly and he became significantly more active in academic, social, and athletic activities. By the middle of his sophomore year, those who knew him prior to his freshman year say he was a different man. Not only did he excel academically, but also athletically on the field.
Late in his sophomore year, he began putting thought and effort into his desired branch of service after graduation. His favorite subjects became psychology and Federation history, specifically the Dominion War, which had previously left him with so many unanswered questions. Some would describe his pursuit of knowledge about the war as obsessive, but it was the main reason for his success as a cadet and his subsequent graduation in 2390. His pursuits of knowledge in these areas led him to request duty in the intelligence branch. It was his father’s name that gained him entry to Starfleet Intelligence but it quickly became apparent to his superiors and instructors that he had found his niche in Starfleet. As a result, he spent two years after graduation attending additional intelligence training under the auspices of the Chief of Starfleet Intelligence. He was subsequently granted his choice of duty assignment aboard the USS Cavalry.
