Summary
Albert is a slacker and malcontent, and probably has no business being anywhere near a starship. Despite this, he has managed to underachieve his way into being Chief Science Officer aboard the USS Cygnus. Standards these days, right?
This being what it is, Mr. Spangler has struggled with who he is, and his place within the fleet. Maybe he could make a go of this whole ‘Starfleet Officer’ thing.
History
Growing up in the shadow of his older brother (the overachiever) and spoke over by his younger brother (the outgoing one), Albert found his niche of not being noticed. He was intelligent enough to achieve decent grades without trying very hard. Despite his parents attempts to be involved in their children’s lives, much of what he told them were simply lies to keep them satisfied.
When time came for college, Albert’s decision to attend the University of Melbourne was largely based on it being as close to the opposite side of the Earth as possible. With an artfully embellished application along with some well-made supporting documentation, he easily obtained acceptance. It was there that he found not only did he have a talent for scientific endeavors, but for once he found actual enjoyment. Having obtained his BS in Analytical Chemistry, Albert opted to continue his schooling towards his MS. He said this was because he enjoyed his studies, but truth be told it was mostly to buy him two more years before facing the prospect of a career.
Degree in hand, Albert once again felt the anxiety of facing his future. By chance, he overheard a conversation between classmates discussing an opportunity with an off-planet mining company. Just as how he secured his college admission, Albert was able to creatively interpret his qualifications into a three year contract with the RV Perspeculor as a Mineral Exploitation Researcher.
Three years passed again without a thought, and before he knew it Albert was back on Earth. He was staying with his parents, once again unemployed with unknown prospects. His family had gathered for dinner, and he was only just taking in the conversation. His brothers were each going on about their individual accomplishments, careers, family, etc. Then it was his turn, and under the expectant look of his mother he blurted out the first thing that came to mind. Starfleet. Having shocked even himself, Albert chose to double down; claiming to have not only applied but been accepted to the Academy.
Motivated by the desire to both not disappoint and not be caught in his lie, Albert knew his only option was to make it the truth. Despite being questionable Starfleet material at best, his education and experience gave him just enough of a boost to gain admittance. He had no idea what he was getting himself into, but he would worry about that later.
